Chicago area thread (Northern IL, Milwaukee, Northern Indiana too)

So it's official. By next golf season I'll be a Milwaukee area THPer instead of N IL. No, it's not far, but time for me to find new courses for sure!

Well, you're more likely to find courses with actual hills up there. :act-up: Still close enough for a meet-in-the-middle unofficial THPer round, though.

Has anybody played the courses at Grand Geneva, The Brute and Highlands iirc. Planning a trip at want to make sure they are solid options.

Have played both, liked the Highlands much better. The Brute is exactly that. Can be long and difficult, especially if the winds are up, and per another poster's comment, it tends to get a lot of play.

What about duds dread? Some place that will be a challenge.,fun..and pretty much easy access for all of us to get too,

would be happy to help setup of needed.

It's a fun/challenging course, albeit expensive. I haven't played it in a few seasons, so I might be interested in a round there, perhaps later in the season.

True story,,,last time I did an online sponsored event was thru a small local group of guys from wrx. We met at a local course (20 or so). Was supposed to be a fun 6/6/6 match (6 scramble/6 alt shot/ 6 best ball)..anyway. On the putting green, 2 of the guys literally got in a all out brawl about a post one made on wrx...the politics thread,,,lol,,seriously. Police were there, everyone tried breaking it up...was awful. I just walked away, and joined a random group on the 1 st tee and had a nice leisurely 18 hole round. The clubhouse was in view for 4 holes or so..and this mess went on for over an hour. I'm hoping your events aren't like that one,,,it wasn't funny by any means,,kinda disturbing.

just my thoughts,

mm

OK, that's just messed-up. Have played with THPers a few times, including one event, and nothing of that sort happens.

Thanks for your input. We decided to stay two nights and play both. Pretty excited

So I'm already thinking about a THP weekend gathering during the end of April (19-20)(25-26) or June (14-15), (21-22). Playing a combo of Shepherd's Crook(http://www.shepherdscrook.org/) Thunderhawk (http://www.thunderhawkgolfclub.org/) or Blackstone(http://www.blackstonegc.com/) Marengo Ridge(http://www.marengoridgegolfclub.com/).

I'd make it an event out there for everyone on THP to come along. 36 holes on Saturday and 18 on Sunday. Just wanted to see what the local people's thoughts are since I'd hope a lot of you could make it as well.

Just a heads up, I love the local planning, but if you are trying to make it a big event where everybody could come out, you might not want to pick weekends that have THP Events scheduled.

TheKing is 4/25-27
SeeMore Event is 6/13-15

I am up for it for sure pending what date we figure out. 3 great courses. Blackstone is a tough track. Let me know when you're thinking.

Wouldn't mind setting up something for 36 holes at bowes creek one weekend as well.

I would be down with this. Something local would be great.

Rap-a-tap Tappin' on my SG4

You could count me in as well.

You can count me in too. Depending on the dates of course. I've never playing any of those courses, so would love to give'um a try.

I would try to make this happen, depending on dates and prior family commitments. Good courses! I have played the Marengo duo..Blackstone is grade "A" with very good interesting greens, Ridge is a fun course too, but more of a value pick.

Thunderhawk and Shepards Crook are at the very top of my "I need a good reason to drive there" list! I have heard so much good stuff about both. I think Keith Foster was the GCA at Shepards Crook, he was heavily involved at The Highlands of Elgin. If it has any of the same qualities....couldn't go wrong there.

Marengo Ridge is a very nice course (especially for the money). That is my home course. I play it on a weekly basis. I know the assistant pro (Tim) very well. I could get us the hook up at that track. From the tips it's a great challenge. Blackstone is a great track, but they are asking crazy money. Give me the Highlands of Elgin any day of week!!

The staff there is great...I only play there once or twice a year, but everyone there is always really nice. Seems like a great place to play regularly. It is a fun layout too.

You are right about Blackstone...you have to watch golfnow...I played it last year for $25 on a sunday at like 2pm? Their regular rates are crazy and for what they charge the service I have received has been seriously lacking. The course is awesome though.

Thunderhawk and Shepherds are BOTH top knotch. I think for these weekend getaways, we try to mix in a "Value" course and an upper course.

I think folks would really enjoy Thunderhawk and Shepherds. I'd think Shepherds for 36 on Sat and Thunderhawk for 18 on Sunday.

Blackstone is fantastic and I like Marengo Ridge. Marengo for 36 and Blackstone for 18.

I'm really trying to gauge what "local folks" would enjoy playing....Out of town folks won't really have much in terms of preference I don't think.

As much as Marengo Ridge and Blackstone would be easier for me to get to. I think Shepherds Crook and Thunderhawk would be easier for most of the Chicago and Wisconsin groups.

If we get enough guys to play we can probably negotiate a better than published rate. Another nice course is Chevy Chase. You get country club service at that course. I've never played Shepards. Thunder hawk is a great track also.

Tom

Shepherd's is phenomenal. Really great track. Only bad thing is no driving range.

I absolutely loved playing Shepherds in high school. Haven't played it since, would really enjoy playing there. And Thunderhawk is tough to beat, just a gorgeous gorgeous course.

I've never played any of the courses that are in consideration.
I need to get out more. :D

Can Madison, WI be included in this group?

Of course! You may have to drive a ways to play with us though :) although you've got some great courses by you!

I want to get up by you one of these days. I've heard great things about University Ridge, and I want to play it.
