Lake Charles - 2014 THP Invitational #2 Sponsored By Bridgestone Golf

I can't even begin to tell you how fun Saturday's round with y'all was. Fun and competitive. I've always had a blast at Invitationals, but the competition between our two groups was so much fun... even if we had to putt almost everything out :alien: Barber will tell you, the adrenaline was pumping on a few of those holes coming down the stretch.

I really hope Barber and I can have a rematch with you guys one day. I've never been to Texas and this needs to change. I'll have a longer recap later, but this one deserved it's own post. I really enjoyed our round with you guys.

P.S. I'm not even one to prefer music during the round, but that playlist was PERFECT!
I knew we were in trouble when you ran the birdie in on 13 & gave it the fist pump. & I know I'm mentioned it multiple times, but that approach on 17 was epic considering the pressure.

Definite yes to a rematch. We were so evenly matched it was scary.

First things first, HUGE HUGE HUGE thank you to Josh, Morgan, Mike (MWard) and Mike Dean for putting on an amazing event. One of the best golf trips I've ever had, period.

For my first Invitational, this was a blast. I'm really glad I decided to jump in. I was really excited, but I was nervous as well.

Tim, I said it before and I'll say it again, you are AWESOME! It was like we've known each other for years. You're just a really cool down to earth guy and I was glad I got to room with you and all the ProTips you gave. You truly embody what everyone on THP talks about describes on the forum. Never change because you truly are one of the great ones. Also, I've read last year's MC recaps and the Bridgestone Championship Recaps, but hearing about both first hand from a participant make them even better than I imagined. Thank you for sharing those experiences with me.

FRIDAY
I'd never been to Houston or Lake Charles before and I was hesitant to do the drive solo, thankfully TribleBogieTim offered to give anyone flying into Hobby a lift.
When I got down to Baggage Claim, Tim was waiting for me with V.man (it was great meeting Ken, more on him later).

My flight was a little late and Tim was in the 2:20pm group so we had to hurry. We were able to make up most of the lost time, and we pulled into the parking lot by 2pm, Tim ran inside to pay and check in for his tee-time but everyone had already teed off! We had some time to kill so we headed over to the range and putting green.

Luckily, V.man and O'Carroll got to the course right on time to join us for the 3pm tee-time.
It was really a pleasure playing with both Ken and Pete they're two really great guys, I'm pretty sure Ken hit more fairways on Friday than I did the entire weekend, such a straight hitter of the ball, definitely made me a little jealous. I don't know how Pete was doing it, but he was shooting vines, giving round updates on the forum, oh yeah and giving himself plenty of birdie looks - I definitely think that if the greens were primed you would have converted at least half them.

Tim has a monster 3wood that he plays, I know he's fighting a hook right now, but when he gets a hold of it and straightens it out WOW! He also would have made Mike Dean proud with a couple of long distance chutts that he nailed. I did feel bad for him though because we did have a group of drunken fools behind us (definitely not any THPers) and it seemed every time they were really obnoxious it was in the middle of Tim's back swing.

Highlight of this round for me was my putting, first time putting the Ghost Spider Si into play and I made a couple of long distance putts and lag putting was great. It was also the first time I gamed my Hopkins wedges and I probably had one of my best days ever out of the sand, they spun and checked like I've never seen before.

After, the round we headed over to BWW to meet up with the rest of the THPers. I met a good portion of the group and everyone was really nice. I did spend most of dinner talking with Barberakb (Aaron) JFlores (Jack) and easy8 (Chris), three really great dudes right there, it was cool to learn that both Aaron and Jack were at their first THP events as well. I didn't get to golf with them but I really hope we do in the future. Chris was in my group on Saturday so I'll talk more about him then.

We were having a really good time on the patio until the monsoon started and forced everyone inside. After that it was off to the hotel and a bed to sleep in.

I'll have Saturday and Sunday recaps later on.

I am sure I am not the only one sitting at their desk dreading having to work today.

I am sure I am not the only one sitting at their desk dreading having to work today.

This weekend was so much fun, I have been struggling all day to do any work.

I came to work today on 2 hours sleep, but it was worth my droopy eyes today lol.

I am sure I am not the only one sitting at their desk dreading having to work today.

Haha work? It definitely was a struggle for me. Really had to force myself to be on my game and coffee, lots of coffee

First of all Thank you Morgan,Josh, Mike Dean, Bridgestone Golf, and THP for making this weekend so enjoyable.
And A HUGE congrats to Jank and CPT Dru on the win!

I was fortunate enough to learn of a spot in the event only after checking in on the thread to check excitement levels after the Hilton Head Island event.
I asked my wife if anything was planned for the weekend and she said no, we agree to talk about the event when she got home, but I accepted the spot and told her so, she laughed and said I thought we were going to talk about it, she had put up with me doing similar things for 21 years. So I have to thank her for her support!

My Weekend Recap:

Friday: Headed to Hobby Airport to pickup OITW (Alex) and on the way I read V-Man post in the thread that O'Carrol's flight was delayed, so I get to the airport and I find Ken and I tell him that if Pete was going to be that late, we could send him a PM and tell him to drive in by himself and Ken could hop in my truck so he wouldn't miss his practice round. Well, after I ask a few questions about Pete's flight we figure out that his flight is on time and Ken was looking at a different flight (moral to that story...if you are meeting someone at the airport make sure you have a flight number and not just the city of origination:D)

Alex's flight was delayed by about 20 minutes, so we grabbed his bags and headed to LC to try and make my 2:20 tee time....Alex and I hit it off right away and it was like we were old friends, so the conversation was great and flowed easy and I drover 80-85 mph and we rolled into the course at 2:00 pm on the nose..I jump out of the truck...grab my clubs and give Alex my truck keys so I can run in and pay and get going....only to find out the 2:20 group went off at 1:50???

So Alex and I spend about an hour chipping and putting (the range was closed) until Ken and Pete arrive and we hit the course with them. Had a great time playing with both guys, I was fortunate enough to play with Ken in Vegas and he is always a great guy...and loves those 440 par 4's into the wind :alien:

First time meeting Pete and really enjoyed the round, once he shook off some winter rust he really started moving the ball out there.....we played the last 2 holes in almost dark conditions. The gang was already at BWW...so we headed straight there from the course and meet up with everyone, had some food and beers until the small Hurricane hit and ran us all off.

Saturday: JeffReedMo and I were teamed up and I think we might be the orginal team Hookers because we both struggled with the right to left's most of the day and even when we did hit good shots we found that neither of us can chip to save our butts...LOL. We managed our way around the course and had a great time....I even chutted in for birdie from about 15 feet off the green (you are welcome MikeDean)
Jeff, sorry I played so bad, but I would tee it up with you anytime buddy!

Our group was to have been Bhilton and Nomadic_Duffer...but ND had to back out for medical reasons(hope you get better soon) so we were just a group of 3 with Brian, who put on a driving clinic with JB's Big Bertha Alpha Driver....man he smoked that thing all day long!! Brian if you could learn to chip you would be deadly buddy, it was a pleasure to meet you and share a round.

We headed to the casino after cleaning up for some pre-dinner gambling...I am still not sure what MikeG did to that Penny slot machine, but it spun by itself for like 15 minutes and tripled his money without him having to even touch it!
The THP dinner was fantastic, especially watching all the people in the 2 hour line staring at us as we walked right past them and right in the door (thanks drunk Cookie!)
After Dinner Jank, Alex and I hit Isle of Capri and spent about 3 hours on a blackjack table drinking and shooting the bull....I had the worst cards in history and still managed to come out $10 up plus about 8 beers.

Sunday: Louisiana National was a great new course...I really liked the layout....shared that round with Capt Dru (less the Bloody Marys) and Alex. We had a blast playing some golf and chatting while we waited on Cookie's group to shoot 300 vines in front of us :alien:

Then Alex and I jumped in the truck and headed back to Texas, before he left I made sure to feed him some good old Whataburger!

Huge thanks to JB, Morgan, 441 and Shakey for all they did....it was a great weekend!

Jank, Did you skip school to come and win this? It was nice meeting you! and Congrats!

Lol. Just don't tell my parents I skipped! 10th grade is tough, so I have a lot of makeup work now.

Alright, here are some of my thoughts about this last weekend. OMG, did I have a fun time. It started out with me leaving my house at 4:30 a.m. to meet threeboysdad. We load in his truck and head to cookie's house to meet up with the rest of the traveling crew. Cookie, Barberakb, Easy8, and capt.dru.
Andrew jumps in with us and everyone else loads up in cookie's suburban and we get on the road. About an hour or if town we decide to grab a quick breakfast, so we text come out plans on where to stop. He finds out where we're going to stop and picks up the pace to catch up with us. Only issue is, we are actually behind him. I did get witness capt.dru doing his duffnering impersonation, or maybe he was just resting up to win this weekend.
As we get into Lake Charles, cookie texts us that JB and Ward have already gotten into to town and they want to meet up for lunch, prior to heading to the course. We ended up with of 9 THPers there to start the weekends festivities, as sposey013168 ended up joining us. We got to hear, first hand, all about the JB and mward travel experience. I don't think I have laughed that hard in awhile.
At the Contraband course, we already have a gathering of THPers on the range. Everyone is doing introductions to new folks and catching up with old friends.
As we start to head to the first tee for the first group, we have to find groups to put Ward and JB into and I was lucky enough to get JB in our group. Nothing against you Ward, but I haven't gotten to tee it up with JB since Austin, 2 years ago.
We played with bhilton and Texas Bubba. We had a very fun round. It was one of the best rounds that I have had in a long time, but the playing part either. All three of these gentlemen are first class all the way. We played some golf and had many laughs. On the back 9, we played a little team match to make it a bit interesting. Bhilton and Texas Bubba against JB and myself. The match flipped and flopped until heading into 17 all square. JB chipped up for a kick in par, I believe TB had about a 10 for to save par, and then bhilton and I were looking at birdie putts. I putted first and just missed my birdie, opening the door for Bh. JB was riding him about making this birdie, and Bh came up a bit short. So it came down to TB's putt to keep it all square. I would say the nerves were at work here. He came up a little short, and we were up one going into 18. And that's how it finished, so we thought. I later find out from JB, that we actual forgot that we had to give them 1 stroke on this 9, so we came away all square in the end. What a great round. Sorry about the lack of chipping on my part JB, and thanks for carrying me on the back 9.
After the round, we head back to get checked in and clean up. Threeboysdad gives capt.dru his truck to get back to the casino to meet up with his dad. After getting cleaned up, my roommates, Threeboysdad and CJ head over to BMW to meet up with everyone.
BWW was hopping out on the patio. 30 something brothers talking and laughing and just plain having fun. Definitely a great evening, until (as cookie elenquently said) the monsoon hit. It probably cut the evening short, but some rest d definitely need before Saturdays festivities.
Getting a little long here. Will continue this later.
I do want to say, this is probably the funnest golf weekend that I have ever experienced. Not sure if it's because this is my 6th THP event, and there were quite a lot of friends (brothers) attending, or what, but I did not want this weekend to end so soon.
I will get back later and finish with my thoughts on the weekend.
Thanks JB, GG, mikedean, Mward, and even you Shakey. You all did a fantastic job on this event. I just wish I could attend each and every one.

It'll be hard to put in words all the great things about this weekend.

It actually started out on Wed. night with TexasBubba & I hitting the road around 4 pm. We both weren't feeling great, but TB sounded like he had TB. After a quick stop for gas & tacos & a small detour through Cut & Shoot, TX, we made it to bryanmac's at 10 pm. We had an 8am tee time at Gray Plantation on Thur, so I tried to get some needed sleep, but the sandman wouldn't come through. I think I finally got about an hour of sleep before I had to get up.

Thursday @ Gray was awesome. I shot a PB of -1 on the front nine, but came back to reality on the back & ended up with a 77. bmac & TB played well also & we had a great time on a great course. I spent the remainder of the day visiting old friends & eating bmac's amazing cooking. I slept like a log Thur night.

Friday's practice round went a totally different than Thur. I shot a whopping 89 & Cookie didn't have the greatest round either. What we did have though was #SwingLube. Regardless of what we shot, we had fun with Jack (jflores) & Chad (EnglishTurn). Jack made par on #1 with ease & had several great shots throughout the round. Chad shot below his standards on the front, but blistered the back @ 1 over. Friday evening was spent at BWW. It was cool to sit around & hear some of the infamous stories from past events & meet a lot of guys. One thing that stuck with me is how excited Wilson Staff is about the THP event in Oct. The guys that get into that event will be blown away. Thinking back about Friday's practice round, the best thing may have been Mward's "stinger" off the first tee. I'm pretty sure that story has been told, so no need to retell it.

Saturday... the big day was finally on us. Got to the course early, met a lot more new folks including my new friend Kpop. Getting there early also allowed me to snag one of the gray Bridgestone caps that I was coveting. On the range, I got to hit quite a few different drivers on the trackman. The Big Bertha delivered some serious numbers, but the BBA wasn't far behind. I didn't want to hog the monitor, so I didn't get a chance to flip the gravity core to see what it would do. Spent quite a bit of time on the putting green & decided to go with my old putter. Not sure if that worked out for the best since I didn't sink any long putts. Off to the 1st tee & get to see Josh (Miller Time) & Aaron (Barberak) smash their drives. This would be a reoccurring theme all day. On the rare occasion one missed, the other guy bailed them out. Josh & Aaron are both great guys, so that made the competition even better. Josh's approach into 17 was nothing less than spectacular. We're talking PGA good. Then Aaron proceeded to cozy the ball up to 6" for the kick in par. BTW, I wounder how many people actually made par on 17? Cookie & I did everything we could to keep it close, but in the end, we just got beat by a better team. I was shocked when Josh & Aaron didn't win it all.
After the round several of the guys followed me to Darrell's. The drive & the wait was brutal, but I think they enjoyed the lunch. We capped off the night at the casino buffet. I did my best to put snow crab & king crab on the endangered species list. The only other things I ate were a few oysters & shrimp, plus a little dessert.

Sunday I woke up with the dreaded thought that it was the last day of this great trip. But I put that behind me soon & focused on having a good time while it lasted. Gerry, the manager at the National, let me out of the commitment for paying for the no shows, so no one needs to send me any cash. I think all the guys that played the course agree the it was in phenomenal shape. My group of bmac, easy8 & jank beat me up & took my lunch money, but I'm not bitter. LOL. I think I shot an 87 & the other guys were probably in the 70s. O'Carroll won the closest to the hole on the par 3 5th. I wish I would have remembered to have them pin it on the left side of the green. It would have been a much more interesting placement. Playing such a nice course with a great group of guys was the best way I could imagine wrapping this trip up. TB & I headed back to bmac's for a quick shower before hitting the road & made it back home around 8:30 lat night.

Overall it was an amazing experience from start to finish. Special thanks to TB for riding with me, bmac for the unbeatable hospitality & to Cookie for helping keep me loose & into the match on Saturday. Lastly, thanks to JB, GG & THP as a whole for giving us hacks a chance to not just play golf, but to live it.
Shakey, I had your back on the gray Bridgestone cap. When I checked in Saturday, there were only two gray caps left. I told them I would take one of the last two gray caps to make sure you got yours. I asked if Shakey had checked in, and they pointed you out. They said you did in fact get your gray cap.

thanks again. Hope to see you soon.

Links at Galloway. Playing with Matt from Chicago and Jim from Memphis. Blast if a round. Matt will probably sign up. Been talking us up. Told him a ky the Wilson event in Chicago.
That's my after work course Jeff! I really wish I could have joined you guys and hope you had a good time.

JM

It was a pleasure playing that Friday round with you and I learned a lot in one loop around that track from you. I know your wife has some family in the Houston area, so if a trip happens tag along and I will treat you to a round of golf so you can escape :act-up:

Had fun guys! Miss ya'll

Ever up this way let me know!

I made it home last night around 10:30 and Skittle made it home as well. We weren't able to play our St. Louis round because we lost daylight and there was a little rain and high winds when we got home. We both had a blast and I'll have a recap posted up later on tonight.

Is Trevor doing your Fitting?

sure enough, My son just went there a couple of weeks ago.

Trevor is a really nice guy, and a hell of a golfer. He made it through pre-qualifier for the Shell Houston Open, came up a little short yesterday at the qualifier. Very knowledgeable and he will definately take good care of you. Enjoy the fitting, also bring snacks and drinks. Get a good warm up, you will hit lot of balls.

+1 Trevor is a good guy. Down to earth and you will be relaxed going through the fitting. Ask any question and pick his brain. Dude knows his stuff.
