Weight loss and your game

I gain about 15 pounds over the winter. From not playing golf... mostly... probably....

During the active season, I play a lot, and I always walk.

I've played 38 times this season since April 9, and I've lost 10 pounds.

First day in the books jogging the course. I teed off put my club in the bag and jogged or ran to the next shot, hit my shot, jogged or ran to the next and so on. After the round I ran from the 18th green to the clubhouse which is about 3/4 mile. Surprisingly I feel great, calves a little sore, but expected. Probably looked like a goof ball out there running down the fairways lol. Shot 83 today and it cost me 2 putts and 2 iron shots, but overall pretty impressed with the results while running. Tomorrow I just have to stop a little sooner before each shot to regroup.

This sounds like speed golf. There's a guy at my course who does this. I talked to him the other day, and he said he plays 18 holes in 90 minutes. Whew! I've fast-walked nine holes in an hour to make a tee time and I was beat.

This must be like the biathlon. All-out exertion and then you have to settle down to hit a shot or putt.

Anyway, I applaud your fast play! :clapp:

I am a big fella myself and my golf game has never met a skinny me and it's gut check time for me. (pun intended)
I just got off my scale and I am disgusted with myself.
My clothes don't fit right, I am not happy.

Changes start today!
I will be starting tonight, I will be creating a new thread begging for support.

I have failed myself many times before, not this time.

I am right there with ya. 2 weeks ago I weighed myself and was the heaviest I have ever been. I just looked at the scale disgusted. I have very little clothes that I wear because everything else fits way to tight and I hate it.

I have tried many times and made many excuses, but not this time.

I haven't drank a soda in 2 weeks which is huge since I used to drink around 2 2 liters a day. I cut off all candy since I used to eat it by the bags every day. My family owns a pizza place that I work for so I cut off pizza as well

My daily diet is oatmeal for breakfast. Salad for lunch and a lean protein and veggies for dinner. Fruits and nuts for snacks during the day. I have already lost 8 pounds doing this.

I know I dont know you personally so this might be weird but I know what you are going through and hope you stick with it

That would be tough for me, as I LOVE pizza and if I worked in a pizza place, oh my. Great job on the loss.

I love pizza as well but there were times where on break i would eat an entire 14 inch large by myself. So I had to cut that out completely

This is the real problem - putting a pizza in front of me, then allowing me to only eat one slice. I did that years ago when I hit 250 and lost 40 pounds back to 210. I was still in my 20's, and was out every night of the week. We often ordered a pizza when visiting the apartment of a couple of girls we were dating. I had the control to just eat a couple of small pieces and then chase it with 3 beers. It seemed that beer without a of lot food was a good weight loss plan - worked for me anyway.

Right now I just got a loaf of jalapeno cheddar focaccia out of the oven that I made to go with our split pea soup tonight. One bowl of soup, one piece of bread. It works.

And that is my biggest issue. Moderation. My wife tells me all the time that I can still eat the stuff I like but just not as much. For me it is easier to not eat it at all than it is to just eat a little.

Another problem with me is I'm a bored eater. If I am bored I will just eat and eat and not even realize how much I have eaten throughout the day.

I am 6'5 and I weigh 275 I have always been a big person but it has gotten out of control lately

Left I was pushing 260. Right I'm just under 200. Hitting the ball much further and lost a slice I'd had for a while.

Inspiring stuff guys, hang in there, I know from experience that it's though and sometimes it breaks you down mentally, but fight back and you'll reach your goals.

It really isn't hard if you set your mind to it. I haven't had a soda since Jan and I used to drink 6-12 a day, and practically abandoned fast food. I still eat it every now and then but have looked over all the menus for the places I go to and found healthy items I can buy. For example Del Taco, can get 2 chicken or steak carbon tacos and they are only 150 calories each, 4g fat, not bad for a fast food meal. McDonald's get a sweet chili chicken wrap around 350 calories and little fat. You do get quite a bit of sodium though, I just make sure later on that day to eat a banana. At home I cook almost every night and only eat fresh chicken, fish or turkey with a vegetable side or a salad. That's really been my whole diet program. Breakfast a granola bar and some fruit or oatmeal and fruit. Something small for lunch.

So true, and very proud of you. I don't drink soda and have been in Mickey D's 3 times in the last 3 years. That's where you do it! You all have done so well, and I hope you inspire more!

Reading through this thread has been an inspiration. About 4 years ago I was in great shape (for me) during college baseball season. The summer before my senior year I was running anywhere from 5-10 miles per night on the treadmill while I'd watch whatever sports games were on tv. It really helped pass the time. Now that I'm out of college and working full time in an office, I've put on a lot of weight. I like to use golf as an excuse to get out and walk 2-3 miles each 9 I play, but it really isn't good enough. I'm going to try to get back into the fitness routine...on non-golf days.

Good on all of you, keep it up! I am subscribing to this thread, as it is helping me to stay focused. I have lost 7lbs this year (6 in the last 4 weeks) and have a long way to go to hit my goals.

I am already starting to feel better, and know this is helping my golf game, just have to keep at it!

The year before my wedding, I went to the doctor and maxed out their scale at 350lbs...So I had to go to the clinic next door where I tipped (and almost broke) the scale at 363. I decided then that I was going to die way too young and that I didn't want to look "like that" in my wedding pics and lost 120lbs in 9mo. Losing it was definitely easier than keeping it off...I'm hovering between 250-260 now but I'm almost 6'6" so it evens out somewhat.

Losing all that weight that quick severely affected my golf game. I went from having a cut/ power fade off of the tee, to having a complete snap hook. I think it's because I didn't have a 120lb tire around my mid-section that I don't have to swing around anymore, but I've turned the hook into a draw. I'm still not 100% comfortable moving the ball from left to right even though it's been three years, but I'm getting used to it little by little.

The best solution is to eat less and workout more. I went from not being able to run a 1/4mi to running a 10k, half-marathon, multiple mud runs that were anywhere from 3-7 miles and just knocked out my first sprint triathlon in April, with another sprint-tri on tap for October. You really need to watch what, and how much you eat - no fast food, no soda, and a lot of fresh foods instead of processed, canned and frozen foods.

Good luck!

Time for an update. After failing miserably thus far and actually gaining about 10 lbs, I had my doc refer me to one of the local hospital's to participate in their weight management program. My wife was against it at first, but when she found out they offered other things besides the various surgeries, she was on board.

Last week I had my physical, discussed the options with the doc and we decided that I should try the 24 week Optifast program before we have any talk of surgery. So, the program consists of a weekly clinic appt. with the doc and a weekly group class that rotates a behaviorist, nutritionist and exercise specialist. For the first 12 weeks, I can only eat/drink the Optifast products. There are protein shakes, bars and some soups. After that, they will introduce food back into my diet, but with the help of the nutritionist.

Yesterday was my first day on the product and it wasn't too difficult. I didn't really get hungry, but I still had some desire for stuff I shouldn't have. The products are tolerable, especially with the bars as they give you something gooey to chew on.

My goal here is to drop 100 lbs, which I'm told is a reasonable goal for the 24 week program. I'll try to give updates as this thing progresses, so please wish me luck. Thanks

Good luck with this, man! I'm determined to lose 30 lb at least over the next few months. I'm gonna follow the F-Factor diet (basically high fiber, cut out lots of processed foods). I'm vowing here to do the following:
1) no eating after 9 pm
2) no junk food

I am going to allow myself a cheat day once a week & not get depressed if I slip up - just keep doing this.

Best of luck to you. I know after losing about 60 lbs of fat I feel awesome.
Dont get discouraged, some weeks you may not drop the weight you want, so dont to caught up in the scale it can lie at times.
Are you going to start with low impact cadio? A early morning walk is a good way to kickstart your day.
As to programs of shakes and bars only I will keep my ooinion to myself :)

I'll add my "big boned" story to this one.

I was pushing (if not exceeding) three bills about five years ago. I don't know for certain, because I would not weigh myself. Last recorded highest weight was 289 at a physical in 2008. Later that year, I played golf in Ireland, and it was the first time that I remember my wedding ring not fitting. I chalked it up to the Guinness, but I knew I was having problems. When I saw photos from that trip, I knew I had to make significant changes.

I started running, I stopped drinking almost a bottle of wine with dinner, and I started watching what I ate. I now typically hover between 225 and 230. (I'm 6'3") I'd like to get under 220, and that's part of my goal in prep for the MC.

This is close to my story. I played minor league football for years as a full back. I can hold a lot of muscle on my frame, and so my ideal weight with good muscle content is about 190 to 205 according to my trainers. Without muscle, if I'm just cutting fat but no mass building, it's more like 175 to 185.

Right now I'm in the 220s, down from a peak of about 289 in 2012 that I reached when I was injured and behind a desk all day. In some ways I feel better now than ever. My hope is to be 199 by this time next year, done the right way.

I did it via:

1. I alternate between 4-hour body "slow carb", Paleo, and Keto. Usually about 4 or 5 months on one until my body adjusts to it. Keto has worked the best for periods of cutting fat.

GREAT ONLINE KEO COMMUNITY found at the link below, and I would recommend anyone to search around this link who wants to lose weight. Good links to resources, support, pic sharing, medical info, and etc: http://www.reddit.com/r/keto

2. Everyday starts out with 10-30 burpees, about 40 air squats, and twice a week yoga (really helps my back and shoulders from golf). I cannot credit yoga enough for the good it's done balancing the toll golf takes. As a pair, they're amazing. For mass/tone I'll do kettle bell drills once to twice a week as time permits. (Though with Keto you can kill a ton of fat without working out at all).

3. I golf damn near every day, even if it's just 20 minutes on the range at 6:30am or 8:30pm. I train on Par3's 10 to 1 to my regular course playing most months, and always walk them. I use golf not as a retreat, but as a way to train my body and my mind and to get outside and moving. This gives it far more value than just raw "entertainment".

4. On keto, I have a glass of wine or a lower carb beer (or two, but not more) on hot summer afternoons after playing and it doesn't negatively affect anything.

5. I know it seems simple, but following this has worked wonders for me. It's nothing exotic or mysterious, you just can't be impatient or sabotage yourself.

I usually have to take off 30# every 2 years. Also it seems entering 40's that I've had to change my eating habits a bit too, but this is also giving me more energy, so its a good trade.

I'll add my 2cents.... I'm 60... Over the years I gained a few pounds every year. Then a few years ago i gained about 70 pounds from low testosterone. Got the meds right, but had a hard time losing the weight. High was 375.. Kept fooling myself because all my numbers (b/p, cholesterol, blood sugar etc) were all good. Last september I had enough. Began eating right and exercising. Did well, lost 40 pounds then had a heart attack in February.I blame the diet and exercise :) ... Back to working out and golfing. I feel better with the weight loss and am hitting the ball a little farther.. It's a struggle to lose weight as we age...

As promised, here is the 1st update. After a week of the Optifast product and nothing else (except a little cream in my coffee) I dropped 15.4 lbs. Doc said not to expect that every week and it will eventually taper down to about 5 lbs a week. Dropping the weight quickly is a strong motivator.

I know I'm not the only fat@ss on here and I'm wondering who else has struggled with their weight and managed to actually lose some and keep it off. I'd like to know where you started, where you are now, how long it took and what you did to get where you are. I'd also like to know how it has effected your golf game.

Personally, a year ago I peaked at 317lbs and am now down to 290 and still going. The biggest change I made was I started eating healthier and take my lunch to work instead of eating out. I still love a good burger and beer now and then. I hate exercising simply for the sake of exercising. I do workout with weights and an elliptical, but would rather walk 9 holes. I do walk 18 on occasion, but I have a bad knee that starts to swell around the 14th or 15th hole.

Last summer, my game was the most consistent it's been in years, especially in my league where I had 16 rounds in the 42-44 stroke range. I did manage 1 round of 37 when my putter was hot.

Anyone else care to "weigh" in?

308 in January 2012, have lost 122 lbs of fat and added 45 lbs of muscle. 2012 and 2013 were awful golf years while my body changed and swing changed. Now it's full on.

My advice is to HAVE A PLAN and stay the course. Don't diet where you hate it. Get your heart rate up for an hour a day. Cheat once or twice every two weeks. Don't lose weight where you lose muscle, and finally, don't focus on the end game so much that you miss the enjoyment of the process of change.

It's the hardest thing I have ever done. Still is difficult.
