At what point does more spin help?

It can be. Its not a yes/or black and white thing, as it depends on the person. For years I was plagued with low launch and high spin. I needed to raise launch without raising spin and was able to do so with the golf ball and finding the right head, along with some swing tweaks.

I never knew this about you. I like how you resolved the issue

Shaft will help or hurt a little but swing tweaks in my experience will make the biggest difference in the numbers that one puts up, certain flaws in ones swing will produce certain results regardless of the equipment.

From my understanding everything is based off ball speed ideally produced from good smash factor, conditions where you play may play better with a higher or lower on the spin/launch spectrum and a good fitter can get you dialed in to what's optimum for you and where you play.
