Trying to hit it harder takes my out of my normal swing tempo and ruins everything. Also, easing off for me results in a sloppy swing. I take the longer club, grip down, and swing normally.
But I do have a story ...
The Men's Club had a three clubs and putter day. I picked a 2-hybrid, 7-iron, and sand wedge for my three clubs. I found myself on the first fairway in the exact middle of the ~60-yard gap between the hybrid and the iron. I thought that taking 30 yards off the hybrid was a bad idea--easing up that much never works, so the only choice left was to gear up with the 7. (Lay up with the 7 and pitch on? Are you kidding?) So I spent about a minute gearing up mentally and practiced a few insane lashes at the ball and stepped up for the shot. Wham! The ball flew 170 and landed on the green, +30 yards farther than normal. And I swore to myself that I would never do that again. And I haven't.
