Wow.
All I did was clean the garage today and all the sudden I have a horrible pinched nerve in my neck. It’s on the left side towards the back and goes into my left shoulder blade. I mean it’s like cry out loud bad when I move a certain way and numbing pain all the time. I am starting to feel it in my left elbow and left hand and can feel my sciatic nerve start to tingle.

Anyone have some short term treatments outside of Advil and heat?

thanks.

Yep, cleaning out the garage can be a pain in the neck.
Sorry, couldn't resist.

I’ve battled a chronic pinched neck nerve from a car accident in 1985. Hanging from my arms on a pull up bar helps and even better is the inversion table that I’ve only had for about 6 months.

Short term? Diluadid.

Long term? Quit putzing around doing household stuff, it’s golf season! Can’t afford an injury now.

So if it's where I think it is based on when my own neck locks up and stuff, it's more your left trap muscle and such than your neck. The shoulder is locked up and muscle guarding, and pinching a nerve that connects all that stuff. First step would be something like a chiro, see if they can make an adjustment or get you on a tens unit and see if they can get the muscles to stop spasming/guarding so it takes that tension off those nerves.

Next step would to be never do anything chore related during golf season. You have all winter to be stuck in the snow doing nothing. You don't injure yourself during prime time golf season sir.

This^^^^
What the old cap said.

Actually the electrical stimulous is what helped me the most as there really isn't an adjustment so to speak. Adjustments helped to I think for other areas as so much is connected around there. Took a few treatment's a few days a part.

It's very debilitating to say the least. Get well soon!

Years ago, lifting something in poor form when my back was already slightly impaired from having done something else wrong a few days before that I pinched a nerve somewhere in my upper back or neck. I had terrible sciatica and my right hand had lost about 75% of its functionality. Dr. at the time sent me to a specialist and everything.

My wife gave me a homeopathic medication and did Shiatsu (an Asian acupressure massage technique) on my. This got me out of pain enough I could resume my stretching and abdominal exercises again. Two weeks later I walked into the doctor's office for the results from the specialist a cured man. My doc was astonished. "How'd you do that?!?!" was his response.

@Smiter: LOL! I had my last golf class yesterday. That morning my wife asked me if I was going to work on the garage that day. "No way," I replied. "Got my last golf class tonight. Just my luck I'd injure myself."

Wasn't kidding, either. Several months ago, working on the same project (it's a long, sordid story), I did something wrong stepping down off a ladder and wrenched my right knee. Was on ibuprofen, icy/hot rub, and a knee brace for a week.

How did you feel when you woke up today ya hypochondriac? ;)
Relax. Take something to take your mind off it. o_O:cool:
Do some stretches. That always helps. Heat. Cold. Doctors usually say whatever feels best. So get out that prescription pad, mofo.

Visit a chiropractor.
My chiro retired and I miss him dearly. Another "to-do" list item. Find a new one! Thanks for the reminder!

Had a pinched nerve in my right shoulder, back, and neck area. Started after doing some yard work, using a rake. .

I couldn't sit in a chair, or walk. The pain was so bad I would throw up sometimes. .

All I could do, with out pain, was lay flat on my back, perfectly still. .

Had doctor look at me. Took some xrays, confirmed it was a pinched nerve.

Gave me some pain pills, and muscle relaxing pills. This, and bed rest.

After about 12 days I could sit up, and walk for short periods.

After 3 weeks I could walk, drive a care, and fully use my right arm again.

After 45 +/- days I was pain free with full mobility.

I didn't swing a golf club for almost 6 weeks.

Only big scare I had was a problem with the muscle relaxing medication. The script said take 2 at bed time. It turned out to be the wrong dosage. To strong. Found it really tough to breathe without fully active muscles.

Rear-ended by a very large vehicle many years ago. Neck, shoulders, hip, knee, you name it. What isn't mangled? :ROFLMAO::eek:
I hate yard raking. That crap will mess you up if you have anything "waiting" to go wrong. ;) I try to hire out a "spring cleanup" if I can find someone. (y)

I took some prednisone last night. I have it around for major gout flare ups. I feel about 85% better this morNing. God bless steroids!

It really depends on why or how it is pinched. I had a training injury back when I was racing bicycles. I slipped a disc in my neck causing a pinched nerve. It was so bad I could only lay on the floor to be comfortable and sleep. It caused the muscles on my right side to contract and my right shoulder was pulled up to my ear and my head down towards my shoulder. I also had some nerve issues in my right arm. The doctor wanted to wait 30 days to see if it would heal in its own(self insured hospital). When it didn’t heal an epidural was injected into the disc and it was fixed. Except for my right arm, it’s never been 100% since.
If it’s due to tight muscles than traction works. I have this device that slowly stretches the neck. https://www.sharperimage.com/si/vie...QuW6Y6Dy92tmDN6oZJFhUn0ARddsm4owaAst7EALw_wcB

Go with ice at the base of your neck instead of heat. Heat doesn’t reduce any inflammation at the site.

I have degenerative disc disease in my neck which causes compression of the same nerve. Usually starts as pain the left trap, then it radiates down the shoulder elbow and my pinky and ring finger get numb. I use this device when it gets bad and lay off golf & working out until the pain goes away, 2-3 weeks usually.iu-7.jpeg

Teeter Hangups or another brand? I've heard nothing but good things about the inversion tables. My problem is it's just another bulky thing to store.

You seem like an empathetic guy so you may be having some tension due to stress and anxiety due to the times. Meditation helps me some with tightness when I make myself do it. Taking care of mental health too goes a long way with physical health IMO.

After several different doctors and a couple specialists...verdict is in.

I knew that the neck is the highway for nerves. Never knew how badly congested the highway can get when there is massive a pile up.

I knew the medication I'm taking for UC causes joint pain and issues with legiments. Just associated everything with that...wrong. Oh, there are real issues with it, but not the complete picture. I have a bunch of those

The third spine specialists opinion backed up the other two. Also negated one section the others thought severe. So I got that going for me.

Long story short:

Three disks areas are severe in nerve compression. One not as bad as the other two. Spinal fluid is still present, but will continue to monitor, so don't need immediate surgery.

Will be replacing the disks in those two areas. FDA has not approved the trifecta yet. Not stable enough when doing three.

Better first step than fusing the three areas. Just starts the degeneration of the vertebrae next to the fusion.

Kinda freaked me out when he was explaining they go through the front of your throat to do it. Getting to a point that I don't care. Medication is the only thing that will take the edge off. Not a fan of going over the limit on Acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Plus my UC meds don't recommend it either.

Have some injections scheduled for next month (soonest appt) to help. Last ones did so hopefully now that we know the exact culprits, he can fine tune it.

Knowing that I won't cause anymore damage and it's not threatening anything else, can just deal with the pain. Just sucks that the arms, legs, hands, shoulders...you get the idea, are sometimes non responsive or like a foreign object.

It's all good...taste and smell would be a great time for them to come back. Just keeps piling up but staying positive the best I can.
