Did you find something else that did work for you wedge wise?

No expert here - but if the sand is wet and loose, I'll play it with an open face just like a normal sand shot and try to make sure I get through the ball and keep the club moving. If it's compact and hard, I treat it as if it was a chip off a cart path/bare lie - chipping stance and swing, square face, pick it clean. Trying to get under the ball in hard-packed sand/mud is a very iffy shot - chances are the bounce is going to pop the leading edge up and you're going to skull it and turn a 20-yard shot into a 120-yard shot...or bury the ball in the bunker face in front of you if there is one.
