Social aspect, but when I'm playing in a group I get competitive.

    Social aspect at present.

If I weren't terrible---I would have fun being competitive.

    So maybe someday it'll change.

Neither really. If I can find a group of folks to start playing with regularly that would be great. But for now I am just trying to improve and enjoy being outdoors.

I don't play in many tournaments, but the competitive element is against myself, mostly. Finding those good swings and trying to replicate it and be the best golfing version of myself is the biggest driver for me.

Personal. I want to be as good as I can possibly be.

The social aspect is huge and what really makes this such a great and enjoyable game, competition too.

But whether playing competitively, socially or alone, the one common thread is that I want to play as well as I possibly can.

The motivating factor every time I tee it up is to best my previous best.

I play golf because it cannot be won, some just play it better. I keep playing to figure out why.

I think my thoughts betray me on this question.

I want to say that I'm more socially driven but the fact is that the competitive aspect (me vs course, me vs buddies, me vs field etc) is what drives me the most. I just love how firing a great low round isn't enough, I feel the need to go out and do it AGAIN, and AGAIN and so on.

I love the social part of golf. I also love the challenge of getting better to be the best golfer I can be. I had my first Taste of competition golf this year and it was a blast it really makes you want to play well.

For me it is competition. Trying to achieve something that is so difficult is a lot of fun.

Just trying to get better. I play a lot and I don't mind going by myself. When I play with someone though I want something to be on the line. I guess that means the competition is number 1 for me even though I enjoy the company.

It really depends on the round Im playing but Im always in a competition with myself every time I play. I always strive to play better. That being said I love the social aspect of the game too, having fun on course, playing some music or just having. A good conversation is a great way to relax

Strictly social for me. The only competitive aspect of my game is me against the course. I don't care if others in my foursome score better than I do, and when they do, I feel great for them. Friends, BS, cigars, etc... is what makes golf enjoyable for me at this point in my life.

I love competition and seem to play better when there's something on the line. I like playing for the social aspect as well. My top reason for playing though is the personal challenge. Golf challenges me in every way. Can you tame your ego? Can top it off the tee and play it from there? Can you be truly honest when you play? When things are going bad do you quit on yourself or does it drive you to get better? Can you enjoy yourself when you are playing badly?

All those types of things are what I love about golf and most people can't take the truth the game presents them. They improve their lie, they don't count that topped one off the tee, they only count one stroke for out of bounds etc. etc. People say, "But it's just for fun! Who cares?" And I say, if it's just for fun then why are you cheating? Why do you care what you shoot? You can't pretend not to care and cheat hahaha, it doesn't make any sense. If you didn't care you would mark down the correct score without a care in the world.
