Let’s Talk Club Building

Pure is having a farewell going out of business sale so I bought $50 worth of undersized and putter grips.

With a spare in case I blew up the grip, I used my air compressor to remove the grip from an Odyssey Junior putter.
Then I added a steel extension I bought from Dicks. For $2.49 I got a steel tube swaged at either end.
The cutting process expands the ends of the tube slightly so it didn't fit in the putter shaft so I trimmed off the distorted tubing so it would fit.
I could have also put it in lathe or filed it to fit.

Epoxied the extension and used a rubber mallet to insure a tight fit. After the epoxy cured I scraped the excess off the shaft with a razor blade.
One wrap of blue tape and blew the grip back on.

Now I have a 31 inch putter with a light weight face balanced head. Total Club weight is 475g. SW is A1.4.

Yes sir!!! Only thing I need to determine is what grip. Would have to be standard black right?
with your driver head and that shaft I think you have options for grip color choices

I use this. I don't remember paying $70 bucks for it, but with a couple rubber bands and a piece of tape I can usually get pretty close to the built weight doing a dry fit. Also great for confirming what you already have if you like to tinker with SW. Needs a level spot but that's it. This thing lives in the same spot on my basement workbench pretty much all the time. Even at $70 it's worth the investment. I've had irons I built myself checked at Club Champion an they were all really close.

Question about graphite iron shafts. I may try to dabble here soon, but have only done steel reshafts in irons so far. Does anyone have some good graphite tip weights they can recommend for irons?
I've used different tip weight materials over the years with graphite shafts: lead, brass and rubber tungsten with no problems (as long as they're compatible with the shaft tip inner diameter). It's easy to adjust weight with rubber tungsten by snipping off material with wire cutters. Golfworks and Billy Bob's have good selections.

Nothing better than a new felt belt on the belt sander.

Has anyone used the orange double bubble epoxy? I normally use the red (quickset) or blue but this came instead of the red…..

Seems to be a mix for the set time, doing so within 30 mins but still has good strength. Need to swap out some wedge heads but needed to make sure I didn’t need to get a return going…..

I just had my first successful intact grip removal. Saw a video of a guy who made a little tool out of some heavy duty wire to jam down the grip to get solvent in there. Took a little while, but I got it. Would have been much easier not using a spray bottle.

Then I rebuilt my 5i since the ferrule had cracked some time ago and eventually broke off. Also put a replacement shaft in my 3 iron since it was bent right at the top of the hosel. I noticed the 3i a whole ago, but after seeing the 5i ferrule break, I'm thinking that's too many hosel/ferrule area damages to be a coincidence. Wondering if they got messed up by the airline.

If I am playing with club weights, assuming it can be done to a suitable tolerance, am I crazy to 3D print club weights where I want to go lighter?

If they are KBS shafts, they have known tip bending issues, especially the C Tapers. If True Temper or Nippon, maybe the baggage handlers got a bit aggressive with your clubs, lol. Seriously though, any steel shafts can bend at the tips if they get beat into the ground enough, especially lightweight steel shafts. Thinner shaft walls makes them easier to bend.

The 3i was bent as if someone were trying to bend the lie angle flat, but used the shaft. Looking down from address it looked fine.

Try rubbing a little Viagra on the shaft near the head -- it may straighten right out.

So the shaft has PD?

FINALLY splurged on a bigger tool chest with wooden top. Not the top of the line, but badass with all the storage. It’s meant for both club stuff and tools, but I’d say it’ll end up 80/20 hahaha

This clears my high top work bench off except for cutting station, wedge stamping block, and vice. Let’s be put frequency machine and swing weight over here. Need a few bells and whistles for measuring and such, but now I e got the space to do it.

Yes, the clubhead drawer will have more in it than that after I get stuff out of storage now 🤣

Very cool.

I just came here to say I just ordered a cobra driver adapter and some new lamkin UTX cord grips but now I feel a little insecure . Lol

It’s becoming a very cool shop setup. Need one more small 6/7 drawer metal tool chest for over by the gripping station and loft/lie machine and I’ll be pretty pleased. Hanging the old TV from the other house tomorrow and running the Sonos speakers out there.

Just need a mini-split before summer.

I have a small corner, and almost no tools but I make it work. lol. I am actually trying to scale way way back on the tinkering and just roll with gear for a bit longer. It won’t end complete though. Never.

I think this turned out to be an absolutely badass solution for me. Lets me SEE what’s there, and opens space in the staff bags for full clubs. 😍
