Ping Anser Driver Review - Forum Testing

I'm going to move mine back to 9.5 for my round this weekend.

4th round after shaft fitting
Adjusted the driver to 9.5*

Mooresville Golf Course
Mooresville, NC
65* and slight wind
Pro V1x ball

It was a different day on the course for me. I decided since I have been struggling with leaving the ball right on my drives, I would adjust it back to 9.5* and neutral. I personally felt more confidence in my driver today. I have been scared of just leaving it out there since I opened the face after my fitting. I really felt like I could go after the ball again and have solid drives. I started the round off a little all over the place, but settled in about the 4 hole. I think this is mostly due to jumping right on the first tee and not hitting the range. I had the wife and kid with me during this nine and didn't want to bother them with the range.

Here is my score card from the round.

Here are my distances and hole thoughts.
1- 263 yd drive, right rough. There is a stream that runs down the left side of this hole. I always end up aiming to far to the right on this hole. It was a straight ball to the right rough.
2- 248 yd drive, left rough. I ended up pulling this one slightly in to the left rough. It wasn't a bad shot and I was able to go after the green.
3- 236 yd drive, left woods. I really pulled this drive in to the woods. I am not sure what happened, but it had some left spin on it.
4- 237 yd drive, middle. I settled down on this drive and put it right in the middle of the fairway. It was a little bit shorter, because it when in to the uphill bank of the fairway.
6- 265 yd drive, middle. I had a nice tempo on this drive and put it right down the center with a small draw.
7- 313 yd drive, middle. This is a small down hill hole and I connected with this shot. I hit it with a nice tempo and on the screws. I only had a 170 left on this 483 par 5.
8- 235 yd drive, left rough. I bit to much of on this dogleg left. I went right in to the rough and hillside. No roll out on this one.

Over all, I feel like I am a lot more consistent and predictable at this setting. It really reminds me of my Razr Hawk that I had today. I was able to just line up and trust the driver. Even though I was only 3/7 of my drives, I had great ones on most of the other holes. I only had one time where I had to punch out. This was mostly due to not warming up. I think I am going to leave the driver at this setting from now on. I know that I saw some longer results during my fitting with the 9* setting, but I am having more confidence and better results at 9.5*.

Grant, I know you said you feel more consistent, but was there any reason you saw for the differences in distance?

I think most of it was the fairways I was hitting in to or misses. The shorter distances that were in the fairway, were uphill. The other short distances hit in the rough and did not roll out. I would say that on those drives it was all carry and no roll out, but you can see how much roll out I had on the other ones. I really think having the 9.5 head helps me a ton. I used to have a 10.5 head and didn't achieve this kind of roll out.

That's great info thanks Grant, it makes since on the roll out, and here in the midwest during the dry summers, roll out is very good!

Im with you on this.

I have always gone with a higher loft head and I think I have been missing out. I wonder if having more roll out with decrease my FIR stats in the long run. If you miss some and the roll out will make it worse.

Ive seen nothing but better results with the 9.5* head. Plus we have the option to go to 10* if we fancy it.

I like that option. I just wish it didn't close the face in.

I hit some of my best drives last last night with the 9.5, hell I drop kicked one 248 and had a another that I was trying to swing easy on to avoide a ravine and it went 242. 9.5* plus sweet spot is a winner!

Kmac - Did I miss it or did you have the TFC 800 Stiff or Regular in for your last round at Frog Hollow?

I still had the regular in play, the stiff just arrived... yesterday or Monday I think.

I can't wait to hear how it works for you.

I have mine moved back to 9.5 and will be letting it sail saturday afternoon.

Two things on this. Stiff shaft and then that baseball bat sized grip both have me intrigued. Interesting that, ddxu might have noticed this, my last round I really didn't lose any right. I had a nice grooved swing going till we started waiting on every single hole and I wanted to fight someone. Never works.

Seems everyone has had better results on this loft. Curious to see how it works for you.

I am not sure if you could, but I think it would be cool to see some launch monitor data.

That sure would be cool to see. Not sure how I could pull it off either. I dunno, maybe I can get it in Golfsmith. They are super relaxed about that stuff as long as its not busy and they're selling clubs. Otherwise I dominate the hitting bays. Time is the only issue.

Catching up a little on this one, you guys are doing a nice job in here. I like the look of this driver a lot more in hand than I did in the initial pics. Adjustability seems to be getting more play than I thought it would initially too.

Loving the layout of the review posts too guys, nice and easy to read through.

Im glad to hear we are doing good with these.

I plan on sticking to 9.5 for a few weeks and maybe even before the end of the season going to 9* and seeing what happens. While I would like the lower ball flight, Im not so sure I want to play any driver with an open face, my miss is a push/fade right.

hahaha I can't believe I missed this.. Classic you.

yeah was caught up in the moment and the darn pic wouldnt load

thats the closest by quite a bit Ive been to the green, nice SW to pin high on the right side, missed the putt.

I walked and when I saw the ball was inside of 150 I was happy, then I kept getting closer and closer and realized it was quite a bit inside of 150!

That's awesome buddy.. I really think the only thing lacking on this club for you is distance. The last time we played I feel like you swatted at a few, and caught them well on the inside of the face, but I think ball type does and should factor. Maybe when we get on the LM we can take a few different types of balls and see if it shows any variables.

That would be cool. I understand it it doesn't happen. I bet the stiff is going to be good for you. You are getting the distance to support having it and it will help with the consistency.

yeah my take away from that day at Yankee was:

1. Hitting fairways is nice
2. Because of #1, not taking penalty strokes is nice
3. The Bridgestone B330 RXS is NOT the ball for me

Id love to get a solid ball testing done

You being in the fairway all day was awesome. It had to feel great. Meanwhile I was messing around in the rough..

The right ball could make this club deadly for you. I can't wait to see it. And I am glad you toyed with 9.5
