I was thinking today all of the irons I have played since I took up golf in 1997. My first set were DCI oversize Blacks, then I went to the DCI 990's, then MacGregor Tourney blades and finally Callaway X-14 steelheads. Then I stopped playing for 4 years until I just got my new clubs with the 09 Burner irons. I am finally getting my game back to where it was in the early 2000's but technology sure has changed. What irons have you played over the years?

Browning 500's, Goldwin AVDP's and Nickent 4DX-CB's.

Big Berthas were my first real set, I think I had the X-12's next, Taylor Made RAC OS (hated them), Ping G10, TM Burners and now the TM R9.

Oh, boy...let me think:

Ryder Cup
Dunlop
Maxfli Revolution (still one of my favorites)
Wilson Fat Shaft
Tommy Armour EVO-31 Reduced Offset Blades (2 identical sets)
Titleist DCI990
Tommy Armour Silver Scot Forged Blades

I think that is it.

Lets see going back here:
(The number on the side is my rating of these clubs)
-Spalding (kids set)
-Tour Model II 3-PW TT lite R (8, they were my first CB's :) )
-Adams A2OS 3-PW Graffaloy R (8)
-Taylormade R7 4-SW TT lite S (9)
-Cleveland CG Red TT S300 (7.5)
-McGregor 695's TT S300 (9)
-R7 TP's TT S300 (9)
-R9 TP's KBS FST Tour (9.25)

Favorite set of the bunch would have to be my first R7's. My first Taylormade set, and my first irons that I broke 80 with. I would never go back to them, but will I will always compare everything to them :bulgy-eyes:

For the past 18+? years I have had the same brand. (Anti OEMs) Before that, I don't remember. Might have been Powerbilts. :D

Wilson Staff
Ping Eye 2
Ping Zing 2

I still have and use all but the Wilsons

Just three sets:

  • MacGregor - Jack Nicklaus Muirfield 20th Anniversary (1-SW)
  • "Snake Eyes" 600B (2-PW)
  • "Snake Eyes" 600C (3-PW)

That's all she wrote!

You'd think so, but no, I just like to try different stuff. Heck I just thought of 2 I forgot about.

Acer XP 905 Tours
Acer XP Pro

I only started playing 6 years ago but I've gone through a couple of sets,

Snake Eyes Vipers
Snake Eyes Python's
Infiniti 422's
Mizuno MX-23's

Ping Zing copies Synchron (my son uses them now)
Callaway X-18 copies Black Shark MX-7 (still have them, great clubs, just too soft as I keep bending the faces with the hard range balls, in fact I have 2 sets because of this)
Callaway X-20 Tour

I can see that some of you are trying to buy a swing.... that or you have way more money that I do. :eyepoke:

My first clubs were a department store beginners half set bought in about 1964 for $30. No idea what the brand.

Since 1974:

(1974) Golden Ram blades (as far as I know there were no cavities then)
(1984) Lynx (don't remember the model - not Predators or Parallax)
(1990) McGregor RPM (manganese bronze heads)
(1999) King Cobra
(2009) Titleist AP2

An example of how prices have changed... the Rams were bought in a pro shop at full retail, complete set of 7 irons and 3 woods for $247 (back then brand name gear was only available through golf course pro shops). My AP2s just for 5I - PW were $600 and that's at cost plus 10% with my employee discount.

Just one set since around 1989, lol.

Lynx Parallax irons with an old Fred Couples Boom Boom driver. This year I did pick up a new R9 driver, a Niblick and a CG14 wedge. Next spring should see me retire the Lynx, though I'm still hitting some nice shots with them.

2 set's

- first set were spauldings
- TM - lcg's (approx 10 years old)

So many that it is hard to keep track but a few of the highlights:

Mizuno MP-14 (Still today my favorite set of irons, sweet feel, and looked beautiful)
Cleveland TA1 (Good feel)
Ping S58 (Very solid set of irons)
Titleist DCI Black
TaylorMade rac combo (these were not the best but had a great look)
TaylorMade 300 (Very solid set of irons)
Mizuno MP-30

These are just a sample of my favorites

I started out playing in the late '90s with my neibor's set of Ben Hogan muscleback blades, then I went to a set of Knight Virage oversize irons, then a set of Titleist DCI 981s, then I got out of golf.
Last year I started playing and used my Knight Virage irons at first, then when I started getting serious about golf again I bought another set of Titleist DCI 981s and then I bought the Mizuno MX-15s that I have now.

I started with hand me downs, but the first set I bought off the shelf were the Callaway X-12s, they were good to me. The second and current were the TM R7 CGBs.

jack nicklaus ones i dont know what model
macgregor v-foils
wilson Di-7's
bridgestone J33 combos

Last 20 years:
Eye 2's
Mizuno MX-23
Big Bertha 2006
G10's (current set, and probably in the bag for a long time to come).

Prior to that I had 1961 Wilson Staff's for almost 20 years, then Hogan Radials for a year or two, before trading them in for the Eye 2's.

A total of 6 sets of irons in 45 years.

  • Acer
  • Acer
  • Snake Eyes 600XC - really some super irons
  • Ping G10
  • Ping S57
I had 2 different sets of Acer clubs, no idea which models they were. The second set of Acer looked like some old Ping Zing clones.
