Busted: Woman caught sneaking into U.S. inside suitcase

(CNN) — Customs and Border Protection officers foiled a smuggling attempt at the U.S.-Mexico border when they discovered a woman contorted and hidden inside a suitcase. Officials released a photo this week showing the woman tucked into a ball and laying inside the luggage in the back of a vehicle.

The woman, a Thai national named Pornkamol Mongkolsermsak, was charged with re-entry after deportation, CBP spokesman Victor Brabble said. She was discovered on December 30, when inspectors at the border referred the driver of a Honda SUV for a secondary inspection, CBP said in a statement. When officers inspected the vehicle, they opened up the suitcase and found the 48-year-old woman hidden underneath some clothing.

Authorities did not release the name of the 56-year-old Phoenix man who was driving the SUV. The case has been turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, CBP said.

For fun, couple does DNA test, but discovers father isn’t biological match to daughter

MIDVALE, Utah — A couple who underwent artificial insemination at a Utah clinic finds out the husband’s sperm had been switched with someone else’s. After a difficult search, the couple discovered who their daughter’s biological dad was, that part of the story is even more jaw dropping.

The family who we will call Paula, Jeff and Ashley thought it would be fun to do DNA testing, but when Paula got the results she was shocked, ” I felt my stomach just drop,” says Paula, who, when she opened the results on her computer found that her husband did not have any DNA matches with the couple’s daughter, “when I called my daughter and my husband’s DNA up next to one another they didn’t share any DNA at all, and I just thought to myself, ‘oh my god,’” says Paula, “I was shaking,” she says as she told her husband the terrible news. “I said Jeff, you’re not going to believe this it’s showing that you and Ashley are not related.”

The couple began thinking the same thing. Back in the early 90′s the pair was having trouble conceiving, so they went to Reproductive Medical Technologies, a clinic in Midvale that is associated with the University of Utah.

In 1992 Ashley, now 21, was born, but with the recent revelations, the couple began to ask how this could happen. They feared that perhaps there was a mix up at the clinic. Paula, using the genealogy she had acquired, tracked down a cousin of Ashley’s biological father, who told her that, Thomas R. Lippert, her cousin, had worked at the very clinic where Paula had been inseminated. “I remember that he was at the front desk a lot of the time,” recalls Paula who says the couple tried on several occasions to get pregnant, She says Lippert who was a part-time employee of the university from 1988 to 1994, had a stack of baby pictures behind his desk, “he seemed friendly and was very proud of all those pictures almost seemed like a brag board up there, those where the children that he had helped people have.” says Paula.

Lippert’s mother agreed to give a DNA sample and the result confirmed that Lippert was indeed Ashley’s father. The question now is how all of this happened, Paula suspects that Lippert for some reason may have switched his sperm sample with her husband’s. “I just thought, ‘oh my gosh,’ this was not an accident, this was intentional. All those photos of the babies that he was so proud of I thought, ‘oh my god how many of those are his biological children?’” says Paula.

This story only gets more stunningly bizarre, as the couple began digging into Lippert’s background. They discovered, that prior to coming to work for the clinic, Lippert had served two years in prison for a high profile kidnapping, where he is accused of snatching up a college co-ed and holding her for three weeks and conducting “love experiments”, that included locking her in a black box and using electroshock therapy on her to make her “fall in love with him.”

The University of Utah is responding to the story and offered 2News the following statement; here it is in its entirety:

“Since April 2013, the University of Utah has been investigating credible information regarding the possible mislabeling or tampering of a semen sample at RMTI (Reproductive Medical Technologies, Inc.), a private andrology lab owned by a University faculty member (now deceased). The facility was a private laboratory located in Midvale, Utah. While not owned or operated by the University, the University contracted with RMTI for specimen preparation and semen analysis. Additionally, RMTI prepared semen samples for private physician offices throughout the community, not University physicians.

Through genetic testing, a woman who received artificial insemination (AI) in 1991 discovered the biological father of her child was not her husband, as she had assumed. She traced the genetics of her child to a man who was a former employee of the now-defunct RMTI, which may have prepared the AI sample. The man in question was also a part-time employee of the University from 1988-94.

There are no remaining records from RMTI to prove the claim and the man in question has been deceased since 1997. Consequently, it is unknown how this incident might have happened. In addition, there is no evidence to indicate this situation extends beyond the case in question. We understand this information has been upsetting for the family and other clients of RMTI. We want to help alleviate this distress by providing professional genetic testing for RMTI clients who were treated between 1988 through 1994.

Concerned individuals should contact the University of Utah Andrology Lab at 801-587-5852."

Man charged with 'atomic wedgie' murder of stepfather

Brad Lee Davis has been charged with killing his stepfather by giving him an 'atomic wedgie' that caused the victim to suffocate on his own underwear.

OKLAHOMA CITY — A 33-year-old Oklahoma man has been charged with killing his stepfather by giving him an "atomic wedgie," that caused the victim to suffocate on his own underwear.

Brad Lee Davis was charged with murder in the death of 58-year-old Denver St. Clair in a drunken family fight at a residence just east of Oklahoma City, the Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office said in an arrest affidavit obtained on Wednesday.

Police arrested Davis on Tuesday. The affidavit said he "grabbed St. Clair's underwear and gave him an 'atomic wedgie.' Davis allegedly pulled the elastic waistband of St. Clair's underwear over his head and around his neck."

Oklahoma Medical Examiner spokeswoman Amy Elliott said the cause of death was asphyxiation and blunt force trauma.

Pottawatomie County Sheriff Deputy Travis Palmer said Davis and St. Clair were drinking beer on the night of Dec. 21 at the older man's residence when St. Clair began speaking ill about his wife, who is Davis' mother.

Investigators said St. Clair's elastic waistband was stretched over his head and that it left ligature marks around his neck. Blood splatter was also found in the kitchen, the living room and on the living room ceiling.

Davis was being held in Pottawatomie County without bond. His lawyer was not immediately available for comment.

WTH is wrong with some people? What an awful way to go.

House fire sparked by family cleaning up toilet paper thrown in trees

DORA, Ala. — After neighborhood kids had rolled a tree in the Crausewell family’s yard in toilet paper last Saturday, Cheryl Crausewell and her son tackled the task of cleaning up the mess on Monday. FOX affiliate WBRC reports that with some toilet paper still left in a magnolia tree, they tried to use a lighter to get rid of it.

But that decision sparked a nightmare for the family when the home they had lived in for the past 12 years went up in flames. The piece of toilet paper they had set on fire was blown into the yard by a gust of wind. Soon after the grass was on fire. The fire spread to the backyard where it picked up fuel from a grill’s propane tank. By that time, the family was in full evacuation mode.

“You’re just doing what you have to do to get everybody out,” Crausewell told WBRC.

Crausewell, her son, her mother, her aunt and her aunt’s caregiver were all able to safely evacuate. The home was declared a total loss, but the family plans to rebuild on the same property with the aid of homeowner’s insurance. Crausewell told WBRC that she’s been the recipient of an outpouring of support from her family, church and has received a visit from the mayor of Dora. She said the experience put everything in perspective.

“It just brings it home how precious life is and all these things really don’t matter,” she told WBRC.

Coroners office confirms dead body was found inside freezer in KCK garage

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Police are investigating after a body was found inside of a freezer at a Kansas City, Kan., residence on Sunday.

Shortly after 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9, Kansas City, Kan., police we dispatched to a home located at 1837 New Jersey on Sunday. On Monday, the Wyandotte County coroners office confirmed human remains were found in a freezer inside a detached garage behind the home. An autopsy to determine a cause of death has been delayed until the body has thawed. Police have confirmed very little at this time, however FOX 4’s Tess Koppelman said police had been gathered around the garage area near the back portion of the home for the majority of the day on Sunday. Early reports called the nature of the death “gruesome” and indicated the remains may have been body parts.

Police said the neighborhood where the body was found is typically not a high-crime area.

“This is, well, this is a nice, nice area of KCK so can’t, can’t say whether we’ve had issues in this neighborhood or not, not a common place,” said a KCK police officer.

On Sunday a neighbor of the residence told FOX 4 he had seen a man and a woman possibly arguing outside the home two days earlier. This case remains under investigation. Police have not released a victim’s name or an additional information at this time.

PICKENS, SC (FOX Carolina) - A Pickens woman has been arrested and charged after deputies said she failed to return a Jennifer Lopez movie she rented in 2005. Kayla Michelle Finley, 27, has been charged with failure to return a rented video cassette, according to the Pickens County Sheriff's Office.

According to warrants Finely rented Monster-In-Law from Dalton Video, which is no longer in business, in 2005 and the tape was not returned within 72 hours. Finley was sent letters to return the video several times but never responded, according to the warrant. It also said a certified warrant was sent to the woman on Sept. 12, 2005.

Finley denied ever getting those warnings, and said she would fight the charges. Finley was arrested on Thursday after a record check showed the offense.

Mummified woman found in backseat of her car in garage, likely died six years ago

DETROIT — A worker hired by the bank to do repairs on a woman’s foreclosed home, discovered the woman’s mummified body this week, sitting in the backseat of her car, parked in the garage. The key was halfway in the ignition. Authorities say they believe the woman died at least six years ago. They’re still trying to figure out what happened.

“I’ve been doing this 37 years. Never seen anything like this before,” said Undersheriff Mike McCabe of Oakland County, Michigan, just outside Detroit.

The woman, who authorities aren’t identifying until they’ve informed her family, paid her bills from her bank account through auto-pay, according to McCabe. At some point, her bank account ran dry. The bills stopped being paid. After its warnings went unanswered, the bank holding the mortgage foreclosed on the house, which eventually led to the discovery of her body. Neighbors said they didn’t know much about the dead woman, describing her as in her 40s and of German descent.

“She really kept to herself. We never really heard anything from her,” neighbor Caitlyn Talbot told CNN affiliate WXYZ.

Talbot said she wasn’t aware of anyone having seen the woman, who traveled a lot, in about six years.

“She was probably there for a couple of days, then she’d leave for a week, then she’d come back. Then she’d leave for a month and come back,” Talbot said.

McCabe says neighbors chalked up the woman’s absences to her returning to Germany for long periods of time.
Despite years without a living owner, the house was never broken into, he said. Authorities told WXYZ that the house appears to have black mold inside it, and that detectives entered the building Thursday wearing hazardous material suits.

Another neighbor, Darryl Tillery, told the Detroit Free Press that mail never piled up at the house and the lawn never grew out of order. McCabe said one of the neighbors cut the grass for years. Police were dispatched to the house for a welfare check in 2007 after a neighbor reported not having seen the owner in a while. After seeing no signs of anything amiss, police went on their way, McCabe said.

Authorities are still waiting for a toxicology report, which will take four to six weeks, before determining the cause of death. The medical examiner found no signs of trauma to the body, McCabe said. Dr. Bernardino Pacris, the county deputy medical examiner who conducted the autopsy, told the Detroit Free Press that the woman’s skin was still intact, but that the internal organs had decomposed. Pacris told the newspaper that during the mummification process, skin develops a parchment-like consistency and leathery texture. Finding a body in such a condition is unusual, he said, but “once in a while, we see this.”

Attempts by CNN to reach Dr. Pacris late Thursday were unsuccessful.

“We heard she had a son, so you’d think someone would’ve come looking for her,” said her neighbor, Caitlyn Talbot.

HOUSTON -
You saw him first on Local 2 -- a convenience store clerk who turned the table on a pair of robbers.

Mayura Dissanyake is a semi-pro mixed martial arts fighter who came to the rescue of a co-worker. Now his story has gone viral. Local 2's Amy Davis talked to the clerk-turned-hero about his newfound fame.

On Facebook, viewers wrote "Kudos to the store clerk" and "I want this guy for my bodyguard."

After Local 2 posted the story on Click2Houston.com, more than 4.5 million people worldwide have watched the video.

"I love it," Dissanyake told Local 2. "I'm having so much fun reading the comments, messages, everything."

Dissanyake went to sleep Friday night after the Local 2 story aired and woke up to some 500 Facebook friend requests. He hopes trending on social media will translate to more fans of his fights in the ring.

"Whenever I have more fans, then I'm going to have more fights because people are coming to see me, so the promoters like that," he said.

While Local 2 was at the store, a radio reporter stopped by. Dissanyake did another interview with CNN. He's not just popular in the United States.

Newspapers and media outlets in his native country of Sri Lanka are picking up the story. Friends and family back home posted the front-page news stories online, calling him a hero. His parents are doing a TV interview in Sri Lanka Monday.

"I texted my dad and I said that I was going to make you proud and I did," said Dissanyake. "He was like, 'I was proud the day you were born.'"

While he's got the skills, he knows what he did earlier this month was risky.

"I'm more alert than before now," he said.

He keeps a watchful eye in case the suspect or his accomplices return, but he has no regrets.

"I would do the same thing," he told Local 2.

Odell Mathis, the man Dissanyake beat into submission, bonded out of the Harris County Jail. Mathis, 33, is charged with robbery with bodily injury.

If you want to see Dissanyake's moves in person, you can. He's fighting at the Bayou City Event Center on Aug. 23.
