Electronics Pondering

I'm shopping for a bluetooth speaker for my golf cart. I've got it narrowed down to a JBL Charge 2/2+ or an UE Boom. I need to listen to both today and decide.

So late night crew:

My wife is in dire need of a new laptop/tablet/2 in 1 for school. She really, really wants a Surface Pro 3 but of course wants the top of the line, totally decked out model for $2k. We don't have that kind of money so I need to show her other options around $1k...

What does everyone recommend? Again, this is for school so it needs to be light, easily transported, good battery and Windows. We aren't an Apple family here.

Thanks!

Have you looked at the Surface 3 (not the Pro version)? We bought one a couple of months ago and it has performed great for us so far. You can also use the pen with it if that's something she wants. I can't remember what the total was but i know for sure we spent under $1000 for the Surface, pen, case and extended warranty.

Thanks JB! I'll look into that one. I know she really wants the pen from the Surface Pro for taking notes in class but I'm trying to show her the difference between wants and needs. Plus she HATES spending money so that's going against me too...

Some idiot told her you need the i7 with 1M GB of RAM (not literally 1M, just making a point) and all the whistles or the machine runs slow.

I build all my own computers and know a good deal about hardware but need to convince her the $700 Surface Pro 3 with the i5 and 4GB RAM will do everything she needs.

Then convince her to spend the money. That's the hard part
I have the pro with the i5 runs great for everything I am the king of multiple windows of multiple programs at the same time. I use Photoshop no problem while have other programs open. Really can't see most users needing more some will but not many

A run to Best Buy tonight should hopefully show her we can afford what she needs for school.

This is perfect. She had always has a ton of open programs and multiple tabs in them all.

I have a Mac Mini that is an awesome paper weight. I can't stand Apple as a company or their overpriced, underperforming hardware.

My mac is from 2009 and runs like a champ. in fact I've never had to deal with spyware, viruses, or any of that related software. I've also never had to reinstall my os or anything. All I have done is replace the battery finally after 6 years and over 700 cycles. Other than that my macbook has been the best computer I ever owned. and it still runs on a core 2 duo.

My wives macbook is from 2006 and still runs like a champ too.

I also have a 2012 mac mini I5 and it runs perfect too and has again never had to be reinstalled.

In the old days, I had to reinstall my PC at least every 6 months, and always had to spend days removing spyware and or viruses, and running scans with adaware, spybot, norton, mcafee, etc all the time.

Don't get me wrong, if I needed something specific that a mac could not do, I'd run windows, which is why I run it in a virtual machine on my mac, and it still performs with windows in that way phenomenally.

If your mac mini is a paperweight and you don;t use it, feel free to send it my way and I'll put it to good use.

And mac resale value is excellent. My 6 year old macbook can still fetch over $300.00 and I only paid $850 for it new.

To each his own years ago when I was only into pc's, if you had asked me about mac I would have had the attitude that they are overpriced. Today, I can tell you that you are not paying just for the hardware, which uses top components, you are also getting the service they provide, the design.

I look at it like a car. Sure I can go buy a decent car, it will still get me from point A to point B but maybe a more expensive luxury model will be better for my needs.

Saw this on the REI site the other day and have been pondering it hard:

http://www.rei.com/product/886267/garmin-vivoactive-gps-multisport-watch

Anybody used it? Sounds awesome and would fit me really well, being it tracks running, hiking, and golfing (among many other things), but unsure on some of the reviews. $250 is pretty reasonable for one of these fancy GPS watches too.

If you were having that much problems you probably should have everything stopped downloading porn off limewire. I have a cheap virus blocker on my pcs and haven't had a problem in years. Also in an office with with 14 PCs we have had one malware problem in the past 3 years.

I don't think the first part of the comment was needed.

It was definitely meant as a joke.

If Ashman took it any other way I'm sorry. As a high schooler in the early 2000s I was definitely talking from experience with the lime wire thing.

You know the rule. :alien:

So the Best Buy stop went awesome. Our budget should be around $800 now.

We decided on 3 brands (maybe 4) to look into:

Microsoft Surface
Lenovo Yoga
Asus...don't remember the model

HP is also on our list but if they still have all their bloatware, we won't go with them. JB?

I have no idea. GG loves her Spectre, so cant comment on issues.

Its solid. I have one that I am not using I would be willing to let it go for cheaper than that. Used it for a week but doesn't sync with my works fitness tracking for insurance

Hmm interesting. Thanks for the offer Taylor, I'll have to think on it. Definitely looks like a good piece. How's the golf feature work?

Pretty solid. Like most other gps devices. It is basic numbers but it was pretty spot on with my rangefinder. It really shines in the workout features IMO

For sure, I just thought it was cool that they incorporated a good feature in there as well.

Absolutely. They make a solid product. I was impressed with it and would still be using it if it synced with our health portal

Good deal. I'll let you know if I decide I want to pick one up, and if you still have it maybe we can make a deal.

$67 amazon prime membership has been acquired

I got the joke.. LOL. I was a big pc gamer, and just normal email and web browsing, but I was always tinkering and at that time was also fixing pc's, so routinely had clients hard drives hooked up to remove viruses and the like, so I always got infected.

My only point was that for me. The Switch to mac was phenomenal in that it does exactly what I have needed it to do and has done so with extreme reliability.

Most of my pc laptops couldn't even keep up after a couple of years of use, nor my desktops, so I was constantly upgrading every year or two to keep up with speed needs.

The mac, runs great still to this day and I have upgraded the os a couple of times but have not gone to the latest release of osx yet. I am still on mountain lion and it serves me well.

And as said the wife's 2006 macbook is still running like a champ too. so yes the hardware costs more, but I can assure you in the last 6 years, both macs have not cost me in total with new batteries more than $1100.00.

I would have been through 6 pc laptops easy in that time, and probably would have spent minimum double that amount. not only in hardware and or upgrades, but in time spent.

So for me the mac is a full Win win. And I still run windows in a virtual machine when I feel the need to tinker and it can be fully isolated from my mac or integrated. I currently have XP, Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and a few versions of linux (I tinker there just to see how it is) and can run them all without ever rebooting my mac. The times I load windows is rare, maybe once a month or so.

Got the 6s today. Really enjoying it so far

Wife ended up with the Surface Pro 3 with the i5 processor, 128gb SSD, 4gb of RAM and a keyboard for under $1k.

She loves it so far. I haven't played around with it yet

My wife is getting my iPad Air so I am looking for a new tablet. I will preface it by saying I only use my tablet to watch movies and tv shows while traveling so I am really looking hard at the new Kindle Fire HD 10. I like the 16x9 aspect ratio and the only drawback is the resolution and the mid-rage processor, but im not sure if those things matter if I am just watching content. Seems to be the smarter buy at 229.00 then dropping a few hundred more on an iPad Air 2 or iPad Mini 4.
