Bye Bye Wynn Golf Course?

I hate to see any course closing but I have to say I'm not overly surprised. It makes sense from a business perspective; opening up a new attraction that will appeal to a larger audience. It's also hard to justify the luxury price tag with the other quality options in the area.

I wonder how much play that course gets compared to others?
Not much since most rounds are comped and the course is empty most of the time. Even when they opened up tee times for people other than guests, not many jumped at the opportunity because of cost. I played it once and that's because I was comped by a friend who was a casino host at the time. Beautiful course.

Course is taking up valuable real estate.
True. This comment from an article back in 2002 when Wynn closed Desert Inn Golf Course.

The Strip is a land of plenty--plenty of casinos, shows, restaurants and shops, but less than plentiful on the Strip is land. Land is valuable and hard to come by. When you have a parcel of land worth billions of dollars dedicated to the not-nearly-so-profitable game of golf, well, the numbers just don't add up.

Back in 2002 the writing was on the wall. In 2008 plans were scraped again and now that the market is up, it's time to change the landscape.

One thing to consider that is missed by those that are not gamblers is it was just as much a comp for gamblers as anything else as an attraction to draw them in.

It's the one thing that would get me in Wynn. Free rooms and meals are nice but a comped $500 round of golf was the Shizzle!

It's sitting in the middle of everything, I'm not surprised this is being considered in a time of expansion and looking to use every single piece of worthy ground.

That's a shame. It's the best course I've played in Vegas and the service was amazing. But I get the business decision and the need to maximize their revenues.

This is great news! Its also nice that they've been keeping the course up, so they don't have to do anything too drastic to re-open.

Great to hear! I’ve only flown over the course but would love to play it if ever given the opportunity. I’m sure that it’s over top like everything else that Wynn does, and at $500 a round would certainly be a one and done for me.

Fickle world...

If i go back to Vegas next year i’m playing this Cascata and the harmon course

I’ve played cascata and Rio Secco (the Harmon course our in Henderson). Both are awesome. Played RS before and after the renovation and they did a great job softening some holes up and making it a bit more playable for us hacks.

Cascata was like freakin Disneyland

I've played this before and really glad it is coming back. One of my friends owns a HVAC company in Vegas that does the Casinos and gets us comped rounds. I'll have to hit him up again when it re-opens.

When I was in Vegas this weekend, the Wynn Golf Course coming back was the big news in the golf community. It will be nice to have an alternative to Bali Hai back on the strip. It will be very interesting how Tom Fazio will squeeze the holes lost to the convention center back onto the property. Personally I hope that the Country Club Grille reopens as that was my favorite place in Wynn.

I don't know why....but it really bothered me when it was announced that this track was being turned into a lagoon or whatever. Not that I'll ever play it, but I like that it's there. Good news that it's coming back!

What was under-estimated was how big of an effect not having it there caused big players to go elsewhere. I am so glad that the Wyngoon is going away. It was such a bad idea.

It's not going away, it's just being moved across the street to the space Wynn bought last summer.

The lagoon is up in the air. According to the earnings release, they are 2-3 years away deciding on what to do with Wynn West. According to their CEO, the leadership team (outside of Wynn) was never all that sold on Phase II of the expansion, which was the lagoon. The convention space was a sure thing but the lagoon was a bit of a Wynn Wild Idea. I would rather see it at Wynn West than the golf course, but bumper boats and other casual water sports don't exactly scream high end resort.

Wow this is cool.

I like bumper boats and casual water sports. :D

I never actually got to play the Wynn. It'd be cool to finally have an opportunity to.

That's great news to hear the golf course is staying. One of my favorite tracks in Vegas.

Lost 16,000 rounds? How? I would look out my hotel window for several years in a row and see maybe... MAYBE, 3 or 4 groups all day.

Let me clarify- I didn’t sit in my room for 5 years and stare at the course. I had an annual conference in Early December for a week at a time. So I might see 36-40 players total for the week with some days, nobody out at all

So, is this primary competition to Shadow Creek? Given the choice(and only one), which and why?

No, I would say Cascata is a closer competitor to Shadow creek with full golf amenities. Wynn is a great course but doesn't have a stand alone clubhouse nor range.

Haha....thanks for clarifying! I agree though, no idea how they tallied up 16k rounds a year on that course. That's 43 rounds a day for a year solid....or 10 foursomes a day. Hmmm, maybe? Seems high though.
