Did the USGA Overdo It with the Knee Drop?

I think this was a silly, unnecessary change. People look like idiots trying to drop from knee height and, as Jman pointed out, pretty much every drop on Tour seems to require a rule official at this point. So play is actually slowing down instead of speeding up by reducing the number of re-drops (the purported reason). Especially given that I don't think anyone can really say with a straight face that re-drops leading to placing the ball was actually a serious problem that needed to be addressed. Anecdotally, I also agree with the post above that dropping from knee height seems to lead a terrible lie more often than not, at least for me.

I don't follow this rule, a crime I know, I just drop the ball from arms length like I always have.

Me too, i just don’t get it

I think they definitely didn't think it through. It's stupid I think. I think it should be as simple as knee or higher, drop once and if it doesn't stay just place it. shouldn't have to be so difficult.
