I don't often use the range. But when I do, I follow what I'd read Tom Watson recommend many years ago.
He said to at first use the longest club that you'd feel confident that you can hit well enough to start. He says this because he found that while shorter clubs are easier to hit during warm-up, they'll also tend to speed up one's tempo. He said the longer club would better set tempo out of the gate and for the rest of the day.
That said, I'll start anywhere from 7i to 4H, depending upon how I'm feeling that day. With hybrid (and rarely too, 5W), I'll often tee-up the first few swings to make it easier on myself.
