How do you yell FORE??

If my ball is going towards people I YELL it, I would ever want to hit someone with my ball. I will do what ever I can to make sure they hear me!

I have always wondered this and this thread is making me ask.... why or how did the ancestors of the game choose the word FORE as the official duck and cover warning, and is the word used by players in every nook and cranny of the non english speaking world?

Golf was popularized in Scotland and England, so it's logical that most terminology would have its roots in those languages. Fore simply means "Beware fore-ward". Shortened to just "Fore!".
