Don't forget about salad!
I think it depends on the thread really. If you are in a Live Event thread things get repeated, just the way it is. Those are fast moving. If you are in a review thread I would search "This Thread" to see if there are some comments about it. I have typed some essays for some of the reviews I get and a page later I see a question asking about something I just wrote about. I don't get upset but that just tells me my post wasn't read. Do I break it up into smaller chunks? Do I jazz it up more? It does make a reviewer feel something. I didn't skim it is exactly what JB said.I am guilty of not reading an entire thread (trying to avoid using the 's' word here) which ultimately results in me not participating in the thread because I don't want to post something that someone already did. Or, worse yet by the time I've come across the thread someone else has already had the thought/comment/question that I came up with, so no sense being redundant.
What's the lesser of 2 evils? Being labeled a skimmer or not participating for fear of being labeled a skimmer?
I'm totally guilty about not utilizing the search function. Never thought of it within a thread howeverI think it depends on the thread really. I agree with this. It doesn’t bother me at all to reply and link the post I or someone else already made.i don't know, if i took the time to write up something in-depth and got a question from a skimmer, it wouldn't bother me that much. it gives me another opportunity to discuss the topic. and i'm also guilty of skimming, way more often these days than i used to.
The ability to search within a thread is such a great feature and works well. If the thread is so long to the point where someone doesn't want to read through all of it (100 pages), then high chance the question and answer is already in there and can be found. Think the conversations within the equipment threads are always more productive when it builds off of things that may have been answered vs. just repetition.I think it depends on the thread really. What really annoys me is when someone says something to the extent of yeah it was discussed in this giant ass thread but gives no clue as to when or where in the thread that discussion took place. To me that feels elitist like if you don’t have the dedication or time to read the entire thread then you don’t deserve to know. Doesn’t happen a lot but I’ve seen it.
Didn't read but Chat GPT said this is the important stuff.
- The author enumerates several things the community unequivocally hates:
- People who skim threads
- DTC Vendors
- Fairway divots
- Bags with 14 slots
- The author confesses to sometimes skimming threads due to time constraints from work and family obligations.
- Despite skimming, the author values participation in the community and tries to contribute in other ways.
- They attribute skimming to the fear of missing out (FOMO) on engaging discussions.
- The author emphasizes that despite skimming, they are not terrible people.
It also helps keep the board and threads active when people are posting and conversing rather than looking up old information in a thread. Maybe something changed with the person who posted that review 3 months ago and asking again will further that conversation.I think there are levels of skimming....like, in the Callaway ball thread, i mean doesn't anything go at that point? It's like 80 pages. Even with the search function it's really hard to find anything specific. And i get that the reviewers put a lot of time into long reviews, they shouldn't be offended ...(note, I was one of the testers that wrote long reviews, so this isn't hypothetical). It's too long a thread, someone can't find my long post on page 48 about the CTx, so i'd either link it or respond again if asked.
But in a 2-3 page thread skimming is bit more egregious....and admittedly i've done even that.
Try not to....but it happens
Ok, this is a pretty important post as it establishes a precedent for acceptable skimming situations. But what about the other cardinal sins listed here? Are there extenuating circumstances or loopholes that should be acknowledged for those?I've been here a few years now, and there's a few things i have learned we hate unequivocally
1) People who skim threads
2) DTC Vendors
3) Fairway divots
4) Bags that have 14 slots in them (this one is bonkers, but i love it)
I do sometimes skim threads. I don't mean to, but i want to explain.....
Coming to THP is a great reprieve from the monotony that is work and family (well actually i do love my job , and tolerate my family)...but they keep you busy. I'm on a number of calls every day.....sometimes you finish a call at like 10:45 and you have only 15 minutes before your next one....so what do you want to do? Obviously come to THP and get a few comments in about this or that, because you know, you REALLY like this place and all
Now look, maybe there is a really cool thread about whatever, could be about shooting -9 at Augusta, could be about LIV, could be about LPGA vs some dude. Whatever. Some thing really piques your interest
So you are like....OK i want to comment on this because it's fun. But you dont have time to read all 6 pages, but you really like being part of the community. So you comment something and then 5 dudes call you a skimmer because someone on page 2 wrote that. It happens.....
So it's true , you skimmed. I can admit this....I , MtlJeff skim semi-regularly (but i try to make it up in other ways, on weekends, with ball reviews etc).... Sometimes you feel that you just want to be a part of a fun thread and if you wait 5 hours until your break you'll miss out on all of the fun stuff. It's classic FOMO.
We're not terrible people, we just skim sometimes.
OK, that's my thing for the day.

Say, hypothetically, there was a random new guy here who really likes 14 slot bags and all the club tangle they reduce. Now this is an unknown guy with zero good will built up so he would likely get pummeled immediately. But what if there was a backstory? What if as a young child he was abandoned by his parents in a casino near 5 slot machines. He was terrified and alone and all he could see was 5 slots. He ran and ran and eventually found his parents chain smoking with a giant bucket of quarters at the end of a row of 14 slots. He instantly felt warm and safe and a strong traumatic bond was formed.
What about then?
Anyways, this is important stuff to cover.
I keep insisting to people that my humility is holding me back. A powerful statement that seems to leave them speechless, with only a blank level stare that must mean total agreement.I've always been of the belief that you know , just put it all out there, start a thread and ask.
My only advice is your reasoning needs more self entitlement and delusions of grandeur.
Everyone loves that. TRUST me on this
