If you think she's serious, go with film, and a book on the basics of composition and exposure. It may cost you a bit in processing costs, but the camera (and kit lens) will save you a ton over a modern DSLR.

There's nothing like trusting your eye, and being excited to see what you've shot. If she gets the hang of the fundamentals, digital then becomes a whole lot more than point and shoot.

@IceyShanks - I know this is an old post, but if your daughter is still interested and a film camera is something you'd consider, I have an Olympus film SLR with several quality lenses I'd be happy to donate. Please PM me if you're interested.

and quality oly lenses can be had pretty cheap as well.
