“Forgiveness Meets Fast” in the Callaway XR and XR Pro Diver offerings, available in retail on January 29th. Callaway has made a clear effort to have better understanding of aerodynamics by working directly with the experts from Boeing, finding new ways to reduce drag and increase headspeed with a better airflow as the driver head travels through the swing. This means a new look on the crown with a unique “trip step” design, lighter face dispersing weight to the perimeter, and a new titanium chassis which equates to higher MOI, faster clubhead speed, and more forgiveness.

Features & Benefits
Forgiveness Meets Fast From Our Most Aerodynamic Head Shape And A Speed Step Crown – We worked with the aerodynamics experts at Boeing to reach a completely new threshold of ball speed. We made this a high head speed design with low drag, and we did it by pinpointing the size and placement of our re-engineered Speed Step Crown to save weight and add more ball speed. XR16 is designed to set the standard in aerodynamics for fast speed and more distance.
Extreme Forgiveness – This driver is extremely forgiving, and we’ve developed a larger shape for MOI, stretched out the crown with a bigger footprint, and put in a Center of Gravity that’s lower and deeper. All this forgiveness leads to more ball speed at every impact location, which can add more distance for all golfers.
Even More Ball Speed With A Faster Face – It features our next generation R*MOTO Face Technology that’s up to 19% thinner and the body is lighter too, which leads to more ball speed across the face. We’ve taken this saved weight and redistributed it in the clubhead for even more MOI. When you combine the faster face with the extreme forgiveness in this driver, you can pick up a lot of ball speed, whether you hit it dead center, off the heel, or off the toe.
Choose Your Shaft – The XR16 comes stock with a Fujikura Speeder Evolution 565 Shaft, and we have premium no-upcharge shafts to fit your swing speed.

Distance From Speed and Aerodynamics – We worked with the aerodynamics experts at Boeing to reach a completely new threshold of ball speed in a deeper face. We made this a high head speed design with low drag in a 450cc head, and we did it by pinpointing the size and placement of our re-engineered shape and a lighter Speed Step Crown to save weight and add more ball speed. And with lower spin and a more neutral CG bias, XR Pro 16 is built for the distance and workability that better players are looking for.
Forgiveness For Better Players – This driver has the forgiveness that better players can use to their advantage, and that’s what happens when you add MOI, provide a bigger footprint, and put in a Center of Gravity that’s lower and deeper. All this forgiveness leads to more ball speed at every impact location, which can add more distance for all golfers.
Even More Ball Speed With A Faster Face – We’ve stepped up our game with next generation R*MOTO Face Technology that’s lighter and thinner to deliver more ball speed across the face. When you combine the faster face with the forgiveness in this driver, you can pick up a lot of ball speed, whether you hit it dead center, off the heel, or off the toe.
Choose Your Shaft – The XR16 Pro comes stock with a Tour Proven Fujikura Evolution II TS 665 Shaft, and you can choose from our great selection of shaft options to find the one that fits your swing speed.
I like the looks of these – the standard XR performed well for me in my fitting last year when paired with a little bit heavier shaft. I’ll be interested in taking some swings with this one.
The bigger head and more MOI sounds like a good combination and the speeder shaft has been one I have had success with.
Looking good, the XR Pro will get a look this year for sure.
Definitely think the pro looks better at address, standard is a little busy with the alignment. Looking forward to reading thoughts of THP’ers that have already tried these.
I like hearing forgiveness repeated with this one…that’s a characteristic of the GBB that I absolutely love.
This one will be on my radar for this season !
Personally I liked the look of last year’s better, but golf clubs are about performance much more than looks. I know this will be a great choice for anyone looking to upgrade their driver.
It looks aerodynamic. That should help with head speed. Not sure if I like the design of it. But the color scheme is eye popping. R*Moto face… sounds interesting.
Nice review Dan.
I liked the original XR, didn’t see huge distance gains, but I will be giving this a swing this year.
I do really like Callaway and the no upcharge on shafts though.
I like the color combo on this. I didn’t hit the XR but I might have to give these a shot side by side along with my Great Big Bertha and see which I like best. I also like the no charge shaft upgrade.
Forgiveness seems to be the name of the game. Color combos look good.
Dan,
That’s a great article. I just bought a Big Bertha APW, but will be looking at the XR16. The looks alone are awesome!!

OK, so picked up a 9 degree XR16 with S stock shaft set at +2 / square….early comments:
very forgiving, you have to make a pretty bad swing to hit a bad shot, toe and heel shots get out there
the shaft and head are well balanced, the entire combo feels smooth, need to hit it more, but the feel is pretty good, dont love it, but we are dating…
cant comment on the distance yet, have only hit it at the range (and there is snow on the ground !!!), but it gets out there and the trajectory is pleasing, medium high with some muscle behind it
I can hit fades pretty easily, does not want to seem to draw that much..it just wants to stay straight
So far so far, definitely more forgiving than my cobra bio cell + that has been outed from the bag…

I have been hitting this XR 16 9 degree driver for a few rounds now and I am not sure if something is wrong with the one I have or not. I am not seeing much yardage out of it at all and the head seems or sounds kinda dead. I have it paired with the Speeder 565 stiff flex shaft and it doesn’t seem to go much over 200-220 yards at best. I can hit my 5wd 200 yards or so.
Should I have this checked at a local golf center or contact Callaway to see if they can find anything wrong with it?
