Paulina Gretzky on cover of Golf Digest

Wow. Just leafed through 16 pages of this.

There's some poor drone in the marketing department that's either going to get fired or made VP. Unless they disclose the sales / subscription figures for GD, I don't know which.
They know their demographics, and I'm pretty sure she's on there because they thought she'd appeal to it. Doesn't mean much to me either way, I see one issue a year, usually at Christmas from a well-meaning relative.

Were there equally attractive women with an actual connection to golf who could have done the cover? Surely. They weren't hired for the Taylormade ads, either.
Next you'll be telling me the girls on car magazine covers aren't spending their weekends tuning their engines.

For me, the thing is a miss. It isn't Men's Golf, I thought they actually TRIED to appeal to everyone regardless of which bathroom they use.
The quote from the editor-in-chief seems particularly disingenuous as well :

"Sports figures, celebrities and models have appeared on Golf Digest covers since the magazine's beginning. Paulina ranks at the high end of the golf celebrity scene today, and she has a compelling story to tell. She also might get some new people interested in the game."

She's 25, and born halfway between 3rd and home. Stacy Lewis has a compelling story. This is baloney. What did she do, overcome wealth and great genetics to look good?

And I don't think we're going to see an influx of party girls and models into the game because of this.

I worry that in order to keep that buzz going, the issues will turn more and more into maxim with golf clubs.

I like where you are going with this, Blu! Lol

What do swimsuit models have to do with sports? Its the highest sold Sports Illustrated magazine edition of the year (even with all the mothers of teen-aged sons cancelling their subscriptions every year)!

I do think Golf Digest might have irritated golf fans, and the LPGA, but with the hubbub it has created, maybe they got what they wanted. If they keep putting provocative models on the cover we'll soon hear a lot of men say they buy it for the articles! LOL

If Golf Digest wants to do a swimsuit issue, I don't think anyone would mind one bit. But the fact that they dubbed this the "fitness issue" and are showing work out routines to help golfers, is where I have a problem with it.

Ah well, it is what it is.

I think it's laughable that anyone is upset about who is on a magazine cover. Golf Digest isn't exactly a regulatory body. It's just a magazine. buy it you like it, don't buy it if you don't like it... but giving it more thought than that doesn't make any sense to me.

I don't see the harm in having discussion about it, people are allowed to be bothered by whatever they are.

I think its laughable that they put Paulina on there myself. You see it different. All healthy convo.

i didn't say anyone wasn't allowed to do anything. To each his own, obviously. But in the realm of things worth getting upset about, a magazine cover isn't even on my radar, that's all.

Recognition. More people are going to recognize Pauline Gretzky than just about any LPGA player out there. I personally watch a lot of the LPGA events and I would probably only be able to name 5 or so women if I saw them on the cover.

Wasn't Yani Tseng on the cover of "Golf" a year or two ago? I don't remember that cover doing anything to move the needle. I bet most golfers (outside this forum of course) didn't even recognize her when they saw the cover.

I had no idea who she was until this thread was started...............

One should always be able to find something positive from
every situation. Maybe the good thing that might have come out of all this is that now there's a lot of people thinking and talking about LPGA and the publicity and media coverage they are not getting.

I bet we will see before the summers end a couple of different magazines putting LPGA players on their covers.

I'm hoping we see Lexi after she wins this tournament. Lots of buzz and story with a young American winning a major.

I agree with both of you guys, Baldguy and James. I think it is funny that people care, but healthy we can discuss it.

Until Pauline made the news for getting her dad's number tattoo'd near her crotch I didn't even know Wayne had a daughter. She is famous for being famous. A much much smaller version of the Kardashians. Exactly what demographic was GD going for?

Assuming it is males, aged 13 to 100.

Correct, so they could have used any attractive woman on their cover. Instead they chose a Kardashian clone with the faintest of golf ties to feature. No one is arguing that sex sells. But GD really could have done the LPGA a solid and they dropped the ball.

Is GD going to use their fitness issue as their version of the swimsuit issue? It seems to be trending that way (if two years makes a trend), but it's pathetic that the only way a woman gets on the cover is for this reason only.

I really hope I don't come across as a jerk as I'm not meaning to at all. That said, if everybody stuck to the mantra "buy it if you like it, don't buy it if you don't like it" there would be next to zero conversations. People come to THP to get involved in discussions like these. I understand you might feel like this is a trivial topic, and that's ok. For others it was a fun topic to discuss.

To be fair to those involved in the conversation, I don't think anybody is upset to the point where it's a distraction in their life. I think for a lot of people the topic was posted and then discussions were had.

I hear you, but honestly, it's their magazine. They can put whomever they want in it. They can turn GD into a porn mag. My choice is to buy or not. That's it. It really doesn't matter to me either way. It isn't like GD is some prestigious organization with hundreds of years of history. It is a magazine.

Who knows, maybe they are losing money and needed to do something to shake things up. No idea, but it is their business and they don't owe the LPGA anything.

And having said all of that, please feel free to discuss it. I am only giving my opinion. Some people like it. Some hate it. I suspect most are indifferent. I guess I fall into the latter.

They may not owe the LPGA anything, but they are two businesses which easily go hand in hand. Both benefit when the game grows, so they would naturally (one would think) seek some sort of mutually beneficial relationship.

I think Non golfers will look at the cover and still not purchase the magazine. Red

Rock bottom golf shared this earlier.

Good on them. Golf gets bogged down with all sorts of fuddy duddy dull sterotypes. She's hot, we love golf. Its just 1 cover. There is always next month.

I wonder of Paulina gets "82" or "13-4" on her right hip when she marries Dustin.

I won't deny that Paulina is smokin' hot, but this is just a pathetic move by GD. You've got a TON of fitness gurus on both the PGA and LPGA tours that could have been a more appropriate fit on the cover. It actually makes GD look pretty desperate IMO. If I were an LPGA tour pro I'd avoid any interview opportunities from GD just to stick it to them.

These are my exact thoughts on the matter

It works for golf's image and Golf Digest's bottom line. Doesn't work for me though. If they wanted glamour, get a real model. If you want to design a cover that's about golf, get a real golfer. It's a disservice to the hard working pros on the LPGA. I think only 11 women have ever been featured on the cover? In such sacred territory, Paulina Gretzky has no place.
