McRib rollout soon, but regional, again
McRib is about to come out of its hiding place — but not for everyone. McDonald's won't give a specific date, but "participating restaurants" regionally will be rolling out the iconic, boneless barbecue pork sandwich this fall, says McDonald's spokeswoman Lisa McComb, in an e-mail. She says McRib has not rolled out nationally since 2011 — mostly due to consumer preferences.
"Some areas of the country have more interest in pork than others," says McComb. Even then, she says, McRib will be sold at "a good majority of McDonald's restaurants."
McRib, which also has onions and pickles stuck inside the sandwich, ranks among the most popular, annual limited-time promotions in all of fast food. Such promotions tend to pump up sales, often during slower times of the year. McRib is so popular that one mega-fan has set up a website, McRiblocator.com, that reports on locations that are selling McRib sandwiches. The site says that some are expected to roll out this weekend, with a wider roll-out on Monday.
McRib, which was first introduced in the early 1980s, has a long, iconic history with McDonald's. Some customers, who love it, are willing to drive long distances and wait in line for it. Others, however, have questioned its ingredients and spread rumors about them on social media.
While McRib's presence is fleeting in the U.S. market, it is sold year-round in Germany. One things for sure: McRib is McMagical with many customers.
"It boosts sales tremendously," says Linda Lipsky, an industry consultant. "It motivates repeat business, too, before the limited offer ends."
