Golf Course question - Short game area

My course's practice area is decent. They have two putting/chipping greens, one with a bunker; a short game area with 6 or 7 flagsticks where you can hit wedges at targets up to about 60 yards from several different types of lies; a bunker on the side of the driving range with a small green and flagstick 10-15 yards away. They also recently installed 4 big nets/baskets on the driving range at about 50-75 yards (I haven't lasered them for yardage yet). It's all free to use for anybody - you just have to buy range balls if you're going to use the bunker or targets on the range (and members get a key tag which gives us 2 large buckets of range balls per day).

Honestly, I'd pay for a bucket then using the short game area once I was done. That shouldn't be an extra cost imho.

That's what most people do.

$7 for a bag of balls to hit onto a range from a bunker by a practice green. Three practice greens (one is an actual 19th hole short par 3).

It's not expansive, but it checks all the boxes.

I have a few options nearby. One is public and shag bag friendly, but has a fake green. Weird.

Where I have a membership is semi-private and they are enhancing their short game area for next season with a new chipping green. Currently have a couple pitching areas and bunkers, along with a 100 yard green. I get free range balls, so I leave the shag bag at home.

There is also another place with a great layout, but crappy grass. It includes a 3 hole short course with 60-90 yard holes.

Yea, I’d pay if I had to.

We have one at the club I'm at. It's been a huge boost to my short game. Without a doubt its the most confident part of my game. Now if I could only finish what I start by making a putt..... :cautious:

The public course next to me has one of the best I've seen. Practice putting green that allows chipping, separate warmup chipping green with bunker and free with greens fee, then the dedicated short game area.

This area is two separate 100 yard holes essentially. Fairway, rough, bunkers, varying lies, etc. You rent them by the hour and bring your own shag bag. The entire hole is just yours! Completely awesome for ball testing, wedge comparisons or plain old practice.
that's awesome!

It’s nonexistent on both courses I play. Have to go sneak out on the course to get actual short game practice potential.

Back when I played I loved going to my local course that had a fantastic practice area. I would spend hours chipping, half shots, and lots of bunker shots. Then on to Range to hit about 60 balls, practicing working the ball around.
The Birkdale has a very nice practice area and with membership you get unlimited Range balls. Next year I will be getting back to what I love, Sunshine and Fun time.

I used to go over to OCN and use their range, practice, and 9-hole course a lot. I haven’t been in several years now,

I'd be in Heaven, my wife would never see me.

The course near me has 2 practice greens, one right near the clubhouse that you can only putt on. And the other with a bunker and a pitching area that covers 10-75 yards or so. Decent setup that I use every now & then.

My course has essentially no short game practice area. A very small (I am talking maybe 3 yards wide and 8 yards long) practice green and no bunker. Tough to practice many types of chip shots with that size of green. I usually practice my short game on the course when playing solo.

The course I play most at has a pretty solid short game area. It's a good sized green with 3 bunkers and you can hit all kinds of shots within about 60 yards. It's a free-to-use warm up area and they generally have quite a few range balls out there to us (or use your own).

I likely wouldn't pay to use it.

There are a couple of muni's around here that are decent for chipping and putting. There is a 9 hole "course" that is really like 9 pitching greens that is $3 to use or free w/ a year long membership (3 free buckets, $1 off every bucket of balls after, a lesson, and unlimited use of the pitching course for $120). I've considered but I'd mostly be using it in the winter and it gets too wet to maintain properly.
We have one of this type of facility located in North Spokane, called Pine Acres, with a full-swing range adjacent to it as well. It is a different pay structure there tho from the one you use.

The only other good practice facility that i know of in this area is about 30 miles southeast of Spokane, actually in Idaho on the Indian Rez. at the Circling Raven golf course, located at the Coeur D'Alene Casino.

It has a 1st class practice area, with everything you can think of-full swing range, chipping range, huge putting green, multiple sand bunkers, with the option to hit off a matt or grass ! Balls are free with the round or a separate fee for just range usage. (if i'm not mistaken)

Finding a course with a good practice area is a big factor when I joined my local muni. Though not an award winning course by any means, they have a range with both mats and grass, short game area (bit of a walk) and a bucket of balls came with the membership.

This was my last year as a member there since a recent promotion allowed me to look into a nicer course. Still public, but I have never seen this course in bad shape. It was also a surprise that range tokens are part of the membership. The chipping green/bunker area is a chunked wedge away from the range, too! I am stoked for this switch and will christen the switch with 2 rounds this weekend and warm up sessions before hand.
