Here's how this works. Pick a course that is overrated, or even if not overrated, maybe the course is over-hyped or just too expensive for what it is. Then, pick a course within 50 miles of that course that is a better alternative.
For example, and starting in my home state of Washington:
Chambers Bay - University Place, WA. Fantastic course and a blast to play. (Far different than what was seen on TV for the U.S. Open.) I don't think, however, that it is worth $180 a round or whatever they're charging right now.
A better alternative:
Gold Mountain Golf Club, Olympic Course - Bremerton, WA (30.5 miles away). Before Chambers Bay was built, Gold Mountain was considered the best course in Washington. A great track and a prime example of Northwest golf.* All for $50 with cart. Great value.
* Sahalee Country Club is the best example of NW golf. If you can get on Sahalee, a private course, do it in a heartbeat.
