The Liv Golf Rumor and News Thread

If they are just random independent contractors, Why are they giving up their membership in PGA. A PGA Tour player is given certain rights and has obligations to play 15 events. When China set up a tour and it went belly up the PGA stepped in and helped reinvigorate it. Same thing in Latin America. They organize and run I believe 8 tours. There has always been a process to get a card...Q school. Then Korn Ferry. So LIV cherry picks and throws around their cash and has zero interest in anything they disturb.
I see both sides here. I get it. But I have always had issues with bullies. And this situation is just that. Can/Will some make more, definitely. But Golf has always had an honor about it. Policing ourselves with rules. This steps all over that for money.
I appreciate the deeper insight here behind the earlier posts. I guess I see it differently in that professional golf has always been more of big business to me than an honorable endeavor.

(Note my views on the game of golf are different and the honor behind the way the game self polices is what makes it stand out.)

Wolff is gone

No surprise there. He can't even consistently make cuts on the PGA Tour, he'll benefit from the weaker fields and guaranteed money of the LIV. I really don't consider that as a great pickup on their part, he's damaged goods.

Everyone has a number 🤣
I won't deny that I do, and I think just about everybody does. Using the THP example - I love this place, love the conversations, the overall atmosphere, the cool events that you won't find anywhere else, the great information, everything about it. I'm not a member of any other golf-related forum right now, and really have no interest in being. If LIV Forums offered me $10,000 to come be a part of their board and THP said no LIV Forums members could be members here, I'd tell the LIV Forums to go pound sand. If they offered me $10 million...whelp, love you guys, shoot me your emails and let's keep in touch, the next golf trip is on me, buh bye. Where's my tipping point between those numbers? I honestly don't know, but it would have to be something well beyond a figure that I easily piss away within a couple years.

It goes back to the old story where the man asks a woman if she'd sleep with him for a million dollars. She says "Of course I would!". He then asks her if she'd do it for fifty dollars and she exclaims "What kind of woman do you think I am?". He replies "We've already established that, now we're just talking price".

I have to disagree. I just don’t see it that way. They see an opportunity to take a product they feel can be improved at money made. It’s not that they don’t care or want to screw the PGA. Only time is going to tell if they are right.

They don't care about golf. They care about strengthening their economy. They are just using golf to do so. They also don't care if they screw the PGAT. That's pretty clear.

I think the PGA Tour is way overblowing this. This should be treated like a new WGC and both should work together, this whole thing right now is dumb. Split talent helps no one
But is it really split talent if LIV players get access to the majors? I can see how the next tier tourneys (Memorial, Players, etc.) may have been hurt but without the ban a good number who have played likely still would have played those.

And then the next level of events seem to have such weaker fields is a name or two missing really moving the needle anyway?

Not sure if this was posted. Sungjae addressing rumors after his WD.

Serious question. Why should they care about “screwing the PGAT? Wouldn’t the PGAT like to screw them also?
Do countries care about one they invade? Do corporations care about the smaller company they’re trying to raid or put out of business? Look at your favorite Italian restaurant… do you think they want their competition to succeed?
My goodness people, the PGA Tour isn’t your family. Worst case scenario… they go belly up? Trust me, your life will go on. You’ll still enjoy watching other golf events to pass your idle time.

The PGA Tour schedule has 48 events this year. LIV is currently less than a quarter of that. I think I’d miss the PGA Tour pretty quickly if they folded.

While I disagree as to most companies care about their particular line of business, the second part is true. They want to make money. Unless I am missing something so does every other economy and business.

And frankly who hasn’t been super successful that hasn’t screwed their competition or another. Did Bill Gates create windows or steal it from Xerox? Did Steve Jobs steal the mouse from Xerox as well? Damn, Xerox was pretty dumb back in the day. 😂

Are you going all out against Microsoft and Apple or are they looked at like the giants of technology and loved?

Talk to me in about two years, let’s see how you feel than. one of the Tours biggest problems is having 48 events, and the LIV will have what, 15 or 16 next year?
BTW plenty of other golf to watch beside LIV and the PGAT

David, you seem like a very nice guy, and I enjoy reading your posts, but if there’s one person I’d worry about being able to go on if the PGAT and THP folded, it would be you.

The PGA Tour is facing a serious, well funded challenge to its monopoly status here in the US. It has never faced such competition. That monopoly is very lucrative for the PGA (Look at their revenues). The Tour is desperate to preserve that and it’s all about money.

From the onset I have said I was unaware the PGA had issues. Obviously I was naive based on the complaints players and fans have made. I enjoy watching just about every PGA event including the off-field ones. What I would miss most is probably the volume of events, considering I already watch events many others don’t care about. However, for the greater viewing population it seems like the PGA needs less of these and more marquees events. I admittedly don’t watch much golf from other tours because I am not as familiar with the golfers and don’t have as much of a rooting interest. I’ll likely end up viewing the most compelling product.

This. ^^^^
all the stuff about legacies, growing the game, etc, that’s all corporate propaganda put out by the Tour and it’s media partners who know they’re in a desperate fight for survival.

Correct. All about preserving and increasing that revenue stream from sponsors and broadcast rights and from hosting a number of tournaments without competition, until now.

They shouldn't care and I'm sure they don't. That's exactly what I said. And obviously the PGAT is trying to screw them too.

Say the LIV calls JB and offers him a stack of cash for THP. JB and Mrs JB are over the moon and set for life. Boss LIV decides to add a porn page, full contact debates, foul language, trolls run free, and now a huge political forum. Post count triples, ad revenue triples, membership triples.

How do you feel about THP? It’s bigger and better, right? Exposing more people to golf, right?

It’s just a little dirty, but hey, a good business decision.

Complete strawman argument.

Sorry, but you lost me here, I don’t see the connection.

This thread kind of jumped the shark
