Does your putter work for you? That was one question I constantly came across on various social media platforms this summer, which apparently, is a common outcome when one spends an exorbitant amount of time looking up different putting tips. As for the original question, it is something that L.A.B. Golf focuses on as they demonstrate that their lie angle balanced putters work in your favor, whereas other putters on the market do not.

L.A.B.’s secret sauce is lie angle balanced putters, hence their name L.A.B. Golf. With their putters, the face stays square to the arc of the putting stroke with no manipulation. When the putter is square at impact, golfers will hit their target line more frequently and get used to seeing that ball disappear into the hole. Let’s dive into our experience with L.A.B.’s newest putter, the Mezz.1 Max, to answer the question of whether it genuinely works.
Without a doubt, the most crucial part of buying a L.A.B. Mezz.1 Max is to get fit. Knowing that it is only feasible for some to head to a fitting studio, L.A.B. has set up a process for remote fittings to accommodate the masses. This is precisely where my journey started. Below is a video from L.A.B. explaining the process.
Thankfully a co-worker recorded a quick video following the guidelines described in their fitting tutorial. The turnaround time for the results was several business days. Still, the recommendations for lie angle were within half a degree of the lie angle recommendations I received during in-person putter fittings.
When it comes to ordering a Mezz.1 Max, the amount of customization is staggering. L.A.B. wants golfers to love their new putter, so every piece of this build is customizable. There are six different colors for the putter head, eleven variations of alignment aids, five grip options (more on them later), and shaft options from Accra, LA Golf, and Breakthrough (BGT) Golf. Picking out a headcover and head weight are also options, although a quick note about the weight options, there is no stated weight. Instead, customers can order these with a lighter, standard, or heavier head weight. For this particular order, the standard weight was the chosen configuration.

For our order, the following options made the cut: Mezz.1 Max in a platinum finish, with a single thick alignment line, a Press II 1.5 grip, and a white Accra putter shaft. In hand, the Mezz.1 Max looks like a distant cousin to many fanged putters on the market today, only larger and more industrial on the sole. It is 20% larger than the standard Mezz.1, offering “outrageous stability,” according to L.A.B. Golf.
There was a bit of a learning curve on the course, which was anticipated. One of the biggest challenges was feeling like the face was square to the target at setup. Factor in the combination of head shape, shaft location, and grip; a lot is going on visually for a golfer who is switching over from a more traditional styled putter. Much to my chagrin, with the Mezz.1 Max, it was not just a plug-and-play scenario, however, once we got settled in, this putter just came to life.

After all the testing had concluded, it is hard to say if this putter is better on lag putts or short putts because it excelled at both. There was an absolute comfort in drawing the putter back further on those long putts because of how stable this head is and how effortless it is to keep that face square. That feeling transitioned to the short putts, making a noticeable difference in making putts and improving confidence while on the greens.
One of the most commonly asked questions about oversized putters is how they sound and feel. By now, golfers understand that mallets help boost M.O.I. properties and beef up stability, but sometimes that comes with an inverse correlation to sound/feel. If judging solely on looks, there is some expectation that this Mezz.1 Max would be one of those cases. In actuality, that could not be further from the truth as the Mezz.1 Max produces a hushed tone off the face translating into a surprisingly soft feel. Shaft selection plays a role here with the feel, and according to L.A.B. Golf, the ACCRA X L.A.B. shaft that we tested provides the softest feel out of all the custom shafts offered.

Finally, let’s talk about the grips because they are unlike anything I have personally used. L.A.B. produces different Press Grips for their putters. These grips have the shaft go in at a slight angle, automatically producing a forward press when addressing the ball. Perhaps this unconventional setup caused some of those early alignment issues. However, once I got comfortable and dialed in my technique, things were noticeably better in getting the ball to start on the intended target line. L.A.B. sells these grips on their site for those interested, and they work on traditional putters.
Time to circle back to the beginning of this article, does your putter work for you? Mezz.1 Max delivered on the promise of a stable head design, and the proof is in the pudding on whether or not this lie angle balanced putter works for me. That answer is a resounding yes. L.A.B. does offer the Mezz.1 Max as a stock option for $469, which jumps to a starting price of $559 when choosing to go the custom route, with putter shafts causing that price to increase based on the selection.
Have you ever been curious about L.A.B. putters? If so, what would it take for you to jump in and add one to your bag?

I’m pretty fascinated by this. The price is a thing, though I suppose it’s not that different than a driver and you’ll use it longer and more often.
I see something like this that is so different and can’t help but think it needs to be in stores for people to try. The fitting aspect is obviously going to add some complexity there, but it’s such a leap of faith to make the jump.
Really interesting read and something that kind of jumps out at you. I kind of like the industrial and less refined look personally, but think the fitting aspect adds both confusion and positivity to the entire dynamic of a purchase like this.
Great write-up @ddec! The more times I see this the more it grows on me. Did you track any putting stats with it during your review?
Great write up @ddec! After my studying this year lie angle balance, a forward CG and weight balance are key to making a consistent putting stroke out of somebody who is inconsistent at controlling the putter head at impact.
I have the MEZZ.1 prototype & have loved it! It’s been a long time since I’ve holed as many putts as I have with this thing. It’s a “point & shoot” type of putter. Pick the line & speed, then just let the putter do the work … stays stable the entire time. Putts are burning edges, if not going in. It just comes down to my green reading & ability to pick the right line & speed. I have the utmost confidence that I’m going to make everything I stand over, even if I run it past 3 feet, I know I’m going to make that come backer. I used to struggle on the greens before, very inconsistent. Not anymore with the MEZZ. I haven’t had a 3 putt in the last 4 rounds. That’s saying something in my mind.
Nice job, Dean. I understand and appreciate the concept but don’t think I could ever “love” looking down at that putter head.
Great write up @ddec ! I’m very curious about LAB Golf putters. How long was the adjustment period? Minutes? Or Days? The fitting video is interesting. Do you believe it was accurate or do you wish you would have done an in person fitting? Is this putter still in the bag?
Ok guys crazy morning here…but I feel like I’m up for questions…

I think it’s very much a leap of faith product. Probably made for lost souls on the greens like me. The only thing I would worry about in stores is that if you are playing with something that’s just so off on the fit, and it doesn’t seem to work, are you ever going to look that direction again for a putter?

Yea. That’s definitely the biggest roadblock. Perfect product for a place like CC maybe?

i rolled some putts on my Truline Big Murph in the basement when it came and then straight to the course with it. My struggles were getting it on my target line. Early in the round everything was right, then left. The last 7-8 holes of that round I was in a groove.
added some practice in my basement between that round and then next round out was pretty strong.

I think I am honestly. More so out of curiosity to see if this feeling hangs on for some time.
Always know what to expect from @ddec Perfection, or close to it. I gotta say I love my putter. But this review makes me wonder if maybe I could do even better. Didn’t think that was possible. Hmmm A custom appointment may be in my future.

forgot to mention the fitting part.
In person putter fittings in my past have recommended 68 degrees. This virtual one they recommended 68.5. I would say that is pretty accurate.
The day I got my Mezz was the day all other putters died in my eyes! I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Putting without fighting torque feels amazing. There’s zero struggle, zero redirecting my putter.
I am interested in the Mezz Max. Really wish I could find one to roll.
I am a DF 2.1 owner. The shape and size actually does not bother me. It’s the MOST stable putter I’ve ever held and virtually swings itself. I mean, get it going but the weighting and shape does the rest. Most expensive piece of golf equipment I’ve ever bought. DF2.1 with BST shaft and even the American flag head over.
That said I accidentally just stepped on the shaft in the back of my truck. Snapped right where the graphite and metal meet. $250 fix or LAB said they would help me out on another one.
So now I’m trying to decide to go right back with another df2.1 or Mezz max. The Mezz obviously looks better and less, “whoa!” But I just can’t imagine it is easier to swing than the DF2.1?
Have you Mezzers tried the DF2.1?

I haven’t swung a DD2.1. But I am with you in the stability factor that LAB produces.
Really do wish it was easier to try these. Or a demo program like irons.

a demo program would be interesting. Because like @Hawk mentioned, without a demo it’s a big leap of faith.
I do think if there was one change I would make to my setup it would be to have this alignment vs the thick black line I have.

If I don’t get to see or hold or hit the Mezz Max, my Leap of Faith will be in another 2.1. I’m headed to Atlanta the first week of December and will likely wait to see if PGA superstore has any Mezz Max in stock. I know they’ll have 2.1.
Rolled the standard MEZZ.1 today. I didn’t love it. I thought I was going to fall in love and just didn’t. Frames the ball nicely. Rolls well. Just didn’t suit my eye. I would choose the DF2.1 over the MEZZ.1.

Nah once you get used to putts dropping in from all over the place … you just might change your mind 😉 I know I did
I found a Mezz 1 Max at 2nd Swing 10 minutes from my home so I’m picking it up on Monday. My buddy got one a month or so ago so I’ve had a chance to putt with it a bit on the practice green and I’m sold on how easy it is to get putts started on my intended line. This one has a BGT Stability shaft in it.
Rolled one at the Scottsdale PGASS today. Really wish they had a demo program. I really liked it and would like to spend a bit more time with working with it!
I haven’t, was really surprised how well it worked for the 5-10 minutes I rolled this one. I was thinking I really need to roll more center shafted putters. (Actually rolled a center shafted PLD Tyne after this and did almost as well with that one).
I have the Link model and its interesting.
I cant seem to get it in my bag because I’m not comfortable with it on short putts. Long putts are great and the feel/sound, balance of the putter is fantastic.
I had mine for about month and left similar as you. Watched Lab video instructions and guidance the putter has been money for me.
For me I focused on gripping light as possible with no pressure on the thumb and using the core to turn slower using the momentum to swing.
I have never made more 6-15 ft putts in my life. And when I miss I don’t miss by much.
Link has made me more aggressive cause I feel so confident I can make the 2-3 ft comeback putts.
I’m thinking that this should apply to all Lab putters as well.
Just my suggestion and opinion.

I am. Was in my shotscope data earlier this morning too and noticed that my putts per round are currently 1+ strokes better than they were last season, also my 3 putt avoidance has improved. On non-Ballyhack greens, I’m very confident with this one.
Rolled this one at my LGS this afternoon and now the ponder is….strong. Those 3-4’ putts felt automatic.
I rolled one at CC. Really enjoyed the experience
I picked on up. Now I have the df2.1 and the mezz 1 max. Been playing max last few rounds. Rolled one at lgs yesterday with an arcca shaft [emoji2956]. Now I got to find out how much the upgrade would be lol.

Looks nice. Did you get the lighter weight package? I picked one up used and it seems like mine has more weights on the bottom. I will have to double check.
This putter is the real deal.
Lag putting does take some time, but in terms of how it works from 15 feet and in is truly incredible.
The online fit is simple, smart and effective. The balance of the putter is unique but just stellar.
However the grip is often overlooked and for me something that makes LAB a real winner with any of their models.
