When you walk into a golf store and make your way to the putting green and see row after row of flat sticks, it begs the question, are you using the right one? How can a golfer choose the right putter for their game? Putters now come in all shapes and sizes with everything from weight to color being different. What are you supposed to look for to get the most success?
THP TV sat down with Sean Toulon from Odyssey Golf to talk about this in a really interesting THP Classroom session. What type of shape should you be playing? Does the neck/hosel area match up with the shape of the putter and your eye? What is toe hang and is the putter I am using best for the type of stroke I have? Each of these are addressed in this easy to understand explanation of choosing the right putter for your game.

This was a great video that mirrored a bunch of the experiences I had in a recent fitting at a Callaway Performance Center on the SAM. While I made the 5 putts during the measurement portion, I was aligned a good deal left and blocking it to the right to compensate. I also had a lot more of a gated swing than I thought I did. So, we went with the Versa alignment system for that, and compared a few of the putters with a bit more toe hang until I found one that felt “natural” to me – the flow neck looked a lot more “right” at address to me than the plumbers neck did.
I have putted better ever since.
Really solid video describing many of the basics and helping to understand why some styles work better than others for certain styles of putting.
Thx for the vid and interview. My first choice would ordinarily be appearance – it was for many years. If I putted with a putter that I was absolutely in “love with” in terms of look, I’d still have an Anser style “blade-like” look with a sound slot. Unfortunately, I was inconsistent in aiming it, and as a result I choose a putter I can correctly aim. I’ve also found that when you start making putts, the putter can go from a an ugly factor of “5” to a beautiful “10” in no time. I am of the camp that the putter picks you because it all starts with aim, and that begins with shape.
Fantastic video, really fascinating about how they pair the Neck to the head – also interesting to hear that tour players struggle with alignment as well.
Also, liked hearing about Toe Hang vs Face Balanced at the end there.
Nice little clip from Dean & Sean. I still don’t know what type of putter I should be using, mallet, blade, something w better alignment, no alignment, etc. But I think Sean sort of hit it in there, in the end we gravitate towards what looks good to us and what instills confidence in our stroke.
This is awesome. Very informational for people just starting to get into golf especially. Thank you!
Great Video and explanation. I like a heavier putter it works better with my putting stroke and feels like I have more control over the putter.
