If you know, you know. That old cliché, now reduced to an anagram in many places, may elicit eyerolls, but it’s very apt when discussing ASICS footwear. From personal experience, it can be life changing. After a summer of increasingly unbearable knee pain, my wife dragged me to a running store for a shoe fitting. That day I left with a pair of ASICS Kayano shoes and haven’t looked back since. In some ways, it was a sad day. Like so many, I now own six pairs of the same shoe that are used (in order of age) for tasks from mowing the lawn, to coaching baseball practice, and finally to wearing around town. Fortunately, the Kayano is fashionable enough that it doesn’t reveal my age quite as much as the classic white New Balance sneaker might.

Knowing that, you can imagine my reaction when I saw ASICS had entered the golf shoe market. As a golfer that tries to walk whenever possible, a comfortable and supportive shoe is indispensable. While ASICS has been a leader in running shoe technology for decades in the United States, they are a relatively new player in the world of golf shoes. As the popularity of their golf-specific line has increased, they’ve introduced a variety of options that cover the needs and budgets of almost every golfer. For 2023, the company is introducing several new colorway and sizing options in the existing Gel-Course Glide and Gel-Kayano Ace lines, along with an all-new shoe, the Gel-Preshot.
ASICS Gel-Kayano Ace

While the basic design of the Kayano Ace hasn’t changed, it’s been refreshed with the addition of two new colorways: Black and White/Neon Lime. Possibly more exciting is the announcement that two colorways will now be available in wide sizes: Glacier Grey/Pure Silver and White/White

I can compare them to a pair of Alphacats I got over the winter and have walked in. For the record, I think the Alphas are really comfortable too. The two are just different. While the Asics have a little more give to them, the Alphas feel more structured/stiff if that makes sense. Neither is necessarily a bad thing. I like that the Alphas are like that. They feel really stable while being very comfortable. The Kayanos feel more sneaker’ish, which makes them feel like they were made for walking. I could and will wear both pairs regularly through the season.
Next time out will give the Preshot a try.
You pretty much nailed it.
Good deal. I was hoping I could get that across so it made sense. I know you’ve used both quite a bit. For a long day on the feet, it would be hard not to take the Kayano. For times where maybe a little more stability/structure is wanted, the Alphas are there.
I have a feeling the Preshots will be unique from the Kayano just because of the leather upper. They do seem to have a lot of cushion as well.
I pretty much alternate between Kayano and Alphacats unless I am wearing Royal Albartross which are my go to
Good stuff here @Hawk .
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the Preshot. I’ve been thinking about getting another pair of the Glides, but might give the Preshot a go.
I’ll make sure to get them out next time. Hopefully weather keeps playing nice.
I did?
I think I’m interested in these. I’m still walking about half of my rounds (ok 1/4) and I’m always in search of that unicorn option that’s going to make it easier on my feet.
How do they fit size wise compared to the Kayano running sneaker? I won’t be able to try on the Kayano Ace but have the Kayano running sneaker.
The fit true to size in my opinion. Like the running shoe, the toe box is nice and roomy.
I have the runner kayano in an 11 and the ace in 10.5. I think the only difference I see is that with the waterproof coating of the ace, there is not as much stretch and give to the fabric for the toe box like in the runner. I have about 6 rounds in my aces now. I really like them. Just for transparency sake, this is my first pair of runner kayanos, but I am a long ASICS wearer.
Some comparison pics below:

Good stuff.
So would I get the same size as my Kayano running sneaker?
I would, yes.

First impression out of the box, especially compared to the Kayano, was that I didn’t love the look. Some of that boils down to 1) color preferences and 2) just how damn good the Kayano looks.
Anyway, some key differences.
Looks wise the kayano is another level.
Agree 100%.
Asics have always been a well-made shoe. After going through other brands of cross-training, running or dad shoes with none of them holding up, I made the switch about 2 years ago and this has become my brand of casual shoe.
Early in 2022, I switched from whatever brand of golf shoes I’d been wearing on the course to my inexpensive Asics Gel Venture running shoes and never looked back. Not a single slip on wet grass and the comfort and absence of any soreness after walking 18 holes sealed the deal.
I plan on upgrading to their golf shoes for 2023 – probably the Gel Course Ace.
Thanks for the nice write-up.
Can you speak how much arch support these have or is it more cushion?
I got to wear mine a few days ago (2022) and they were very comfortable. I can imagine these will be very nice as well.
Im not a huge arch support expert, but my understanding is that the Kayano running shoes are more for people with low arches and/flatter feet. The sole feels very cushioned to me.
Yup. Pondering as well…

It’s between these and the new pumas I think.
