About 16 years ago, Callaway Golf released the Steelhead X-14 irons and they were incredibly well received, with some golfers, at the time, proclaiming them the best irons Callaway ever put out. A myriad of products have come since that time, but following the bringing back of some iconic names, the Steelhead makes a return for the brand. Both irons and hybrids are being released and below you will find all of the information.
Irons
Distance Features
More Speed and Distance from Next-Generation 360 Face Cup Technology
Next-generation 360 Face CupTM technology increases ball speed with greater efficiency on both center hits and mis-hits for more distance on every swing.
Higher Launch and Better Feel from Steel-Infused Polyurethane Layer
A bar of steel-infused soft urethane layer positioned behind the lower portion of the face serves two functions. 1) Absorbs unwanted vibration for great feel. 2) The integration of steel into the urethane adds weight, which lowers the head’s Center of Gravity for faster ball speed on low hits and higher launch characteristics.
Control Features
More Forgiveness from Hollow Bore-Thru Hosel Design
Hollow Bore-Thru hosel design saves significant weight that’s repositioned in strategic places in the head to create more forgiveness and easier launch.
More Control and Distance from Progressive Center of Gravity Positioning
The CG is positioned strategically in each iron to promote easy launch and long carry in the long- irons, easy launch and keen control in the middle-irons, and lower and high-spinning shots in the short-irons.
Hybrids
Distance Features
More Speed and Distance from a Larger Face and Next-Gen Hyper Speed Face Cup Technology
A larger clubface energized by our next-generation Hyper Speed Face Cup technology promotes faster ball speed for more ball speed, especially on off-center hits.
Easy Launch, High Flight and Long Carry from a Larger Head and Deep-back CG
Larger head and deep-back CG make XR Steelhead Hybrids easier to launch high for more carry and distance.
Faster Head Speed for More Distance from Speed Step Technology
Designed with the assistance of aerodynamic experts, Callaway’s Speed Step Technology improves airflow to promote faster clubhead speed for more distance.
Control Features
Increased Forgiveness from a Refined Head Shape
Our designers maximized the forgiveness of the head by creating a slightly deeper body and longer blade length to create a larger hitting area and raise the MOI, making the Steelhead XR Hybrid easy to hit from a wide variety of lies both on and off the fairway.

Very cool, that they’re bringing back the iconic name, I really like those stock shaft offerings for the irons and hybrids
Interesting to see the bore through come back. Makes sense why they’ve done it. Think this will be a successful line for Callaway.
I feel like putting on baggy, pleated khaki pants and an over sized golf polo after reading this. The old school collided with the new. Can’t wait to hit these!
Very cool looking irons.
I’ve been waiting for this release. Really interested in seeing how these perform with the Matrix f15 graphite.
Very much another throwback name for Callaway. Interested to see how they perform.
Assuming these would be more of a Game Improvement iron vs the previous release XR Irons?
Braddman19,
In the opinion of this reviewer, these are close to a replacement to the XR irons that came out 2 years ago.
They really do remind me of the older berthas and steelheads. Kind of cool!
Original X-14 were so different from the X-12. They were a little smaller, and they had the best looking satin heads ever made. There was a blue badge in the cavity that matched the blue stock light blue stock shaft…really nice clubs…these look fantastic…
X14 Pro was my favorite iron, wish I still had them. Curious though, is the XP95 Stepless stock shaft mentioned a redo of the Project X95? Does anyone know the performance difference vs. the regular XP95? Thanks.
wilyz,
They are different shafts.
Thank you
