The Cleveland Golf lineup came back with a bang a couple of weeks ago with the launch of their new Launcher XL drivers and fairway woods. One area where this company has been at the forefront of innovation has been the hollow body and specifically the category of hybrid irons.
What started with the Altitude line back in 2013, the hybrid iron segment has continued to grow and today bringing their latest iteration with the Cleveland Launcher XL Halo irons. Before we dive into our full video review, let’s show off some of the tech specs.
The lineup comes complete with either the True Temper XP 90 steel shafts or the Project X Cypher iron shafts. An interesting note is that if you are someone that struggles with the length of irons, the Cleveland Launcher XL Halo irons can be ordered in what is called “Accuracy Build” where the clubs are a half inch shorter across the board. By going with this setup, you would lose the Action Mass CB, which is an 8g weight placed inside the butt end of the grip to deliver more balance.
In our THP Tech Studio video below we kick it off with some Cleveland Launcher XL Halo irons tech talk from an overhead view. From there, we hop into the hitting bay where you will see all of the swings and then finally we sit down in table view and breakdown the data from the swings you saw.
After watching the video above, what are your thoughts on the Halo irons?
The Details
In Stores: 8/20/21 for Graphite and 9/17/21 for Steel
Cost: $899 for Graphite and $799 for Steel
Grip: Golf Pride Tour Velvet 360
Love these irons. Hit some really good shots today. I had 2 eight irons into greens today that I flew the green and one really well struck PW that came up considerably short. It was a blind shot and I think it rolled back off the green.???? But, it was odd anyway. I hit a crappy 4 iron that still got to the green somehow!
Love all the positive feedback. My demo Halos arrived yesterday. Fedex kept changing the arrival dates so I missed using them at the golf course yesterday. The odd thing about yesterday is I hit my Ping G2 irons better than I ever have, especially the long irons. My playing partner kept saying “you sure you want to change to hybrids?” Tomorrow I will take some of the Halos to the range along with a few G2 irons.

Maybe you had a good swing day? 🙂 Center hits will work with any golf club. My experience with these irons are that small mishits are almost not punished at all. Still goes long and high.
It was a good swing day. I have a hitting mat on my porch and use Almost Golf balls. This morning off the mat I was not making good contact with either club type, which was a bummer.
Has anyone compared the Launcher HB’s to the Halo’s? I currently game the HB’s and I am wondering….

Don’t get discouraged. There’s an adjustment period for hybrid irons. There will be a pay off. Just make sure the shaft flexis good.

Not directly.
But Starting with the 588 Altitude the head size on those, the Launcher HB and Turbos were pretty much the same size heel to toe, sole width toe height, etc.
The Halo is longer heel to toe than those. Believe Cleveland said the Halo head is their largest to date and something like 10-15% bigger. The topline looks a little thinner on the Halo vs the Altitude.
I have Trackman numbers on the Halo and Altitudes. I will post them if I can dig them up.

I hit some balls today. Mostly directly into a decent wind. Senior shaft feels fine. Did not notice anything odd. Only took three Halo clubs and three G2 clubs. Halo DW, 8i, 5i – G2 PW, 8i, and 5i. I hit the DW to a 95 yard flag and it was nice. Maybe 5 feet max roll out. Got very close four out of six shots. Two within three feet. The Halo 8i and 5i did not seem to be a club longer as most people state. The conditions, however, were not ideal for a head-to-head comparison. Overall, they were straighter than my G2s. Going to hit more balls in the morning.

Cool, I went with a sr shaft too. It’s been an adjustment going from a stiffer regular shaft (HB3 Clevelands). I was considering breaking up the set. Using the HB3’s for 3,4,5 and Halo’s 6-W. I Iike the Halo shorter clubs.
Anyone see anything positive from the counter balance weight?. I had my club built plus 1/2 and there was no weight 🙁
The XL Halo graphite clubs I am trying have the standard Golf Pride Tour Velvet grip. My understanding is each club has an eight gram weight at the top of the grip. Is this weight embedded in the shaft? My initial opinion is I’m not crazy about this grip, and if I bought these I would replace the grips.

I agree, go with another grip. You should have the weight with any grip. In my experience, Tour Velvet’s are inconsistent with their tackiness.

Experts can chime in, but I would imagine you’d have to match replacement grip weight with the OEM grip weight to keep things in tune.

Thanks. Not something I have considered. Edited. The OEM grips are ~45 grams. The Winn Grips I just put on my G2 irons are 22 grams. I like these grips. Based on some searches, the two answers were “would not be noticeable” and “the weight difference at the club head would be 1/2 the added weight at the grip.” There are 28 grams in an ounce. I’ll do more research if I buy these clubs.
I took a big leap of faith today because of how well the Halo irons have been performing for me.
I’ve been looking to get a higher launch and more distance from my driver (G425 Max 9* set at 10*), and decided to take advantage of Callaway’s 50% trade in bonus. I ordered a 10.5* Rogue ST Max with an NVS Orange regular flex shaft (I have a brand new version of the same shaft in A flex).
I had a $87 credit, and traded in my Rogue ST 4&5 hybrids (I got $225 for each) so the driver cost me about $20 out of pocket.
I then ordered a Halo 4 iron 2* strong (like I did with my 5-DW) through DD. I liked the ST hybrids very much, but I quickly realized after ordering the Halo 5 iron the shorter shaft worked better for me than the 5 hybrid and my distance was the same. I’m hoping this holds true with an 18* 4 iron.
I’m going to play the 4 iron a bit, and if it’s as good as the rest of the Halo irons, I’ll begin to compare the Hy-wood and G425 17* with my 18* Rogue ST 3 hybrid. Highest and longest will take the spot.

You are going to love the 4 iron! The Launcher HB 4 is easy to hit, it has become my favorite iron to hit which says a lot being what I used to think was a hard to hit spot in my bag. The Halo should be better from what I understand.

I could, but from the reviews I’ve read online the ST Max is supposedly better sounding, more forgiving, and definitely longer. I’m hoping the NVS Orange/10.5* launches higher also. I’ve only hit it once, with a different shaft, but it set up well and definitely felt/sounded better. We’ll see though, as I’ve always loved Ping drivers… ????
The main reason though is I think the Distanza shaft I have in the Ping is too whippy for me. When I was fit for it back when the club was released in January ‘21 my SS was coming in around 82-83 mph, but I was having back issues at that time. I didn’t actually buy the club until last October(?) and it seems like when I try to really go after it I end up hooking it way more often then I should. I’ve since been measured at between 86-88 mph 2x in the past 3 weeks. Both times the NVS Orange in regular was the suggested shaft. Once for a PXG and then for a Callaway.
I’m going to hold onto the 425 Max though. Callaway allows a 30 day trial and you get full credit back if you don’t like a club. Worst case scenario here is I don’t like the ST Max driver, I send it back while reordering either the hybrid(s) I traded in, or get a FW or bag.

Sounds like a plan. Yeah that Distanza shaft is pretty soft. Reminds me a lot of pings version of a XXIO shaft. If you are 86-88 you’d fit solidly in the Alta CB Reg. I’m not much faster and really dig the Tensei Orange Av Raw 55R which is a no charge option. Ive had several fitters tell me the Tensei Orange in Reg launches higher than the Alta CB. I found them to be similar but like that the Tensei plays at 45.25” vs the Alta at 45.75”.

It actually didn’t end up being much of a plan, after all. ?
I’m going ahead with the Halo 4 iron I ordered yesterday, but canceled the driver.
I went and compared my G425 with the ST one more time this morning, and my SS averaged 86. My Ping hung right there with the Rogue in fact I think it performed better. The salesman said the Distanza was fine for me, and it did in fact have better numbers than an Alta we put in briefly. I still want to try a nvs orange in the 425 though.
So I canceled the Rogue order and turned my attention to the rest of the top portion of my bag. The 425 3 wood was very nice, and that becomes a ponder.
I definitely want to compare my #3 hybrid with the Hy-wood also. I’ve hit it with a regular flex shaft, and the height I get with it is exactly what I’m looking for, but the distance I got wasn’t as great as I read others talk about, and the length of the club itself felt awkward to me.
Finding one in LH Senior flex is like finding a unicorn right now. I spoke to a Cleveland rep 3 weeks ago and he said they should be getting LH heads in by the 26th of this month. He said they have the shafts already, so hopefully that can happen soon.

Dud you try the 425 sft 5w ? That’s my only fairway wood I carry. Launches easy and for me it’s easier to fade than draw. I can do both but it’s usually more less a straight 190-205 club for me. Whoops. Just realized we’re not in the 425 thread. Maybe the mods can move the last couple posts

Agreed about the thread.
I’m not a fan of the SFT versions though. They have never worked for me, in both the driver and FWs. The driver is a hook machine, and the FWs play a club short. Both tend to ballon on me also.
Cleveland/Srixon had a demo day today. I specifically went to try these out after the success I was seeing with the Hywood. My goal is to make golf as easy as possible. I walked away enamored. These clubs felt like cheating with how easy they were to hit. Sure I did have some bad swings, but definitely not as penalizing as my current irons. A proper fitting is in my future.

Getting fit is a great idea, picking the right shaft especially. The stock Tour Velvets grips are bad.
Played with my demo XL Halos today. Every shot with the Halos was not perfect but none were thin or fat to the point it cost me strokes. It was the first time I hit new balls so my distance estimations on how far each club would carry was off some. Shot 41 on the front nine and this was with a four put on a par 3. Yea, I know. Second lowest nine hole score I’ve ever had. Shot 46 on the back with poor chipping, two three puts, and one lost ball. I was thrilled with an 87. Pretty windy also. So I’ll be buying the Halos. Never once felt like I was going to hit a poor shot while swinging. I’ve also quit carrying a driver and hit with a Taylormade M2 5-wood instead. I lose some distance but it’s a lot more predictable.

The weight is in the shaft not the grip. Which is why when you get the “accuracy build” there is no weight. That .5 inch that is removed is where the weight is. I actually bought a pulled shaft from a D Wedge on eBay. Project X Cypher and when I swapped the grip there it was.
I played yesterday and had one of the most defining shots yet for me as far as the forgiveness in these clubs.
I was 124 out and hit a 9 iron about as poorly as I can. As soon as I hit it I knew it would take off low and hot, and slice either into a trap left of the green or into the water further left.
Incredibly, the ball held it’s line, and ran up a false front, stopping hole high on the fringe, 20 feet right of the bunker and about 10 feet from the pin.
My playing partner said “you caught it thin, but hit it pretty solid, huh?” I showed him the grass mark on the face. It was as low and far out on the toe as you can hit a ball without missing it completely. How that ball stayed straight I’ll never know.
I’m so all in on these things instead of waiting for the 4 iron to arrive, I traded in my Rogue ST 5 hybrid today and ordered the Hy-wood.
Bag battles will ensue between it and the Halo 4i vs the Rogue ST 3&4 hybrids. I’m especially curious about how the 18* 4 iron (2* strong) works out. I hope it doesn’t end up me going a bridge too far… ?

That shaft is still living rent free in your head. Relax, and just forget about it.
The Velocity is a good ball. Nice to hear it’s working for you. I played it for a full season and liked it very much. Try the Oncore Elixir ball though. I think you’ll like the performance, and you’ll save a few bucks also. 😉
@Carolina Golfer I’m going to suggest something to you, and please take it in the spirit it’s intended, which is to help you clear your head.
Go to a store or Cleveland demo day. Ask them to let you hit the Halo demo iron. Here’s the catch though. Ask the rep to let you hit the senior and regular flex shaft about 10x each, without letting you know which one you’re hitting.
Personally, I don’t think you’ll be able to tell the difference, but you might… who knows? Either way you’ll finally get over the uneasy feeling you have about the flex you’re playing now. Until you’re able to do that, you’re never going to be happy with the set you have.
I know how you’re feeling. I bought a set of these irons when they first came out, and I went with the salesman’s suggestion (against my better judgement). I knew I was hitting them too high, but he insisted my numbers were fine and that’s what the clubs were meant to do.
Sure enough, when I took them out on the course, they felt like they were ballooning in the air, and played very short distance wise. I knew these clubs would be really good for me though, but I had to get them the way I wanted.
Fast forward a few months later, I decided to order the 6&PW 2* strong. Bingo! The flight was perfect, and they now played as long as my PXG irons, but with way more forgiveness. I then ordered the 7,8,9 DW and followed that with the 5iron shortly after. This week I ordered the 4 iron also..
The moral of this very long story is, you know your game and your swing better than we do. One way or the other you have to resolve your doubts about the Senior flex shafts.
Has anyone tried these with the steel shafts? I’m curious how they felt compared to the comparable graphite ones.

I bounce around between Taylormade TP5 practice balls and Bridgestone e12 Contact for most of my rounds. My last round, with demo Halos, I played mostly TP5 balls. On one hole, I played a Titleist Tour Soft. It was a par 3 155 yards into the wind over a pond. Not wanting to leave it short, I hit a 5 iron. It was way LONG, but had a steep hill as a backstop. Rolled back just off the green. Made par. I never felt like I would miss a shot with the Halos. I hit a couple of poor shots but overall was thrilled with the results the Halos provided considering it was my first time on the course with them.

I think this is a great idea. There’s a local course that has demo days, and I’ll have to look at their website to see when they have Cleveland coming out. This reminds me of my buddy buying a set of graphite shafted, senior flex Wilson Staff irons. He was hitting the living dog snot out of them! A little while later we were playing and I noticed that he has his old Callaways bag in the bag. He said that he couldn’t feel the clubhead with the Wilsons. I asked him why he would care, since he hit the Wilsons much better than the Callaways. Sometimes I think we can fool ourselves or let labels do so.
I was considering special-ordering a set that was hard-stepped so I could get between a Reg and Stiff with the graphite shafts, but ended up finding a fantastic deal on a new set of Regulars that I couldn’t pass them up. Even if I have to replace the shafts and grips, I’d still end up ahead.
Hope these end up being the clubsI have been looking for.
Anyone buy a set of head covers for these that they don’t use? My clubs stay in my trunk all the time and I would like a set since they get jostled so much back there. Can’t find them in stock anywhere
They have arrived maiden voyage today.
Received my Halos Thursday. Hit at the range yesterday. Not only are they easy to hit, the consistent distance was awesome.
had the HB launchers from 2017 and then the cobra T Rails – traded them both in this year and bought the Ping I 525 – bad move – just ordered the Halo version thru GT and should get them next week
Hi, first post…..
I’m 52, have some lower back issues and haven’t really played much in the last 10 years. My current irons are Wilson Deep Red fatshaft irons with stiff shafts; completely wrong for me now. In fact, probably wrong for me 10 years ago. I don’t have the swing speed.
So, I want to play again and I’m very interested in these irons. However, I don’t have a stockist near me here in the uk. I’m tall, 6’3”, and I was recently measured as green dot, 2 degrees up and 0.75” – 1.00” longer. Plus, it was recommended that I choose a senior flex.
The thing is, I’m hoping to buy second hand, as I can’t currently afford a new set, but due to my requirements, this is difficult, so I will probably need to look at the HB Turbo irons. I can get lie and length adjusted locally but it would help greatly if the regular flex was ok for me as there aren’t many senior flex on the used market. I have read that the graphite Miyazaki 6r shafts are on the softer side of regular, and obviously they’re very light. Is this true?
What other differences are there between the Turbos and the Halos?
If I can find somewhere near me that fits Cleveland irons I’ll pay them a visit.
Thanks

I’ve demo’d the HB Turbos twice and have the XL Halos. I think they are similar, making the HB Turbos a good value. Maybe, the rails are the only difference? I haven’t heard many people comment on the counter balance weight. So, that is different too. But, I don’t think that is a game changer.
Got an e-mail from a local course announcing a couple of Cleveland demo days. The first for their regular clubs, and a second for their wedges. I immediately clicked on the link provided to try to book a time, only to discover that all times had been booked. Wow! Obviously there is a lot of interest in these clubs. So, I guess what I’ll do, is just show up (the demo runs from 3PM to 6PM on that date), and hope somebody else can’t or at least get a chance to swing some of them!

You should be fine to just show up.
