Washington had to sign a blank check to Ovi to keep him there.. 9.5 on the cap every season for what, ten years?
Someone can feel free to try and convince me that Sid was worth less, or that management actually had to convince him to sign that deal. He could have easily justified a 10+ year 10+ million dollar per year contract and I bet they would have given it to him in a heartbeat. That's not good management, that is being in the presence of THE best NHL player and letting him steer the ship.
Look at other teams who have even close to that level of talent... Hell, Columbus had to fork out 7.8 million per year to nash, who couldn't be bothered to try more than half his shifts. Is that bad management, or bad luck that they drafted first a year that Sid wasn't on the board? It's luck of the draw.
