Pull the pin or leave it in?
Pull the pin or leave it in?
Ran into a little situation that hasn't been discussed recently but affected me on back to back holes this weekend. I missed GIR on the first two holes of the day, but my ball was just off the green on the collar area on both occasions. I chose to use my AW and run it up to the hole both times, as they were slightly uphill shots. My playing partners asked if I wanted the pin in or out and I said "out" both times. Admittedly, both balls had a tad too much on them (left about 3' and 5' par putts) but they hit the cup and lipped out. I couldn't help but think that if the pin had still been in, one or both might have dropped or at least given me easier par putts.
I have a few questions for everyone: How do you decide whether to putt the pin or not? Is it a gut feeling or is strategy involved or is it all situational? Does it differ if you are going to putt or chip it; uphill or downhill; fast greens or slow greens?
Looking forward to all of your thoughts!
