Garage Simulator Crew

I was talking to a buddy of mine who is building a new garage about the structural things he needs to do to raise the ceiling for his sim. Then I got to thinking of the structural things I need to do to mine to get enough room for a sim...
It's typically not possible to make modifications to existing trusses, to add ceiling height. Unless it was built before trusses existed. If it were stick built rafters, that's another conversation entirely. But you should get whatever modifications you want done, done by a structural engineer. Unless you have a good grasp on construction practices. Just a heads up.

Thinking about the same thing on my 1940's garage, someday

It's probably a good thing that I am a licensed structural engineer in 46 states. I was advising my buddy on his new stick built garage. Same with my 1950s garage. But yes, modifying trusses tends to be less simple.

Lol. Nice. I've seen people try to modify trusses before. Usually farmers trying to get equipment into a building. It's never good.
No charge for the referrals.;)

On the drive to her parents this week, the wife and I were talking about work we are planning for the house in 2022. She mentioned getting the simulator area started and it made me incredibly happy, though low on the priority list haha.

Ceilings are too low, so will try somwthing outdoors again.

We’re going through a major backyard remodel, but once that’s done I’ll get something simple outdoors:

a net (thinking Spornio SPG-7), a camera-based lm (have a skytrak I lent a buddy a while back), and a nearby PC w/ TV nearby. All close to the bar and bbq if it goes to plan. Then hopefully in a cpl years upgrade to GC3/LP.

Too bad the Mevo+ didn't work out for you

I still think it’s really solid outdoors and they keep working on it. Maybe with the RCT balls it would have been better for me.

Looking back, if you have a permanent setup and loads of room radar should work decently.I lacked the permanent setup to make it work tbh; it was fun testing it though.

I have the spornia net, love it!

Would love to one day have a simulator at home! Every time I watch YouTube videos it does not look easy to build one and ceiling height is very important.

Ceiling height is important for the obvious reasons but it’s easier to setup than you may think. Of course it depends the type of setup but I went the easy route to setup and break down easily so I can still park the cars in the garage. I have a spornia net and fiberbuilt mat to go with skytrak. Setup and breakdown in maybe 5min? Never really timed it.

Looking forward to this campaign. Moving soon and part of my needs are a room, whether in house or garage, where a simulator can be placed.

This is giving me some ideas...

Tell him to be careful with the heater that close to the plastic.

How much is it to rent a wedding tent for 3 months? :p

@JB do you know what projector you have in the Tech Studio?

Starting to clean out the old 1940's single detached garage/pool cabana. to prepare for hopefully the final makeover. Going to rip off the old roof which has 3-4 layers of shingles on it, moss and sags a bit. extend the walls from 72" studs to 104". This will give a height of about 110" inside the garage and install new roof and new side door facing the pool. One that was not found in the trash.

Then finish off the interior and the floor into something nicer.

I kept telling Mrs Duffer that any house that we were considering needed to have an area for a Sim... Then I didn't check the interior height of the garage. :banghead:

It's only a vacation home, at least for now. Until that changes or the drought ends we have 50+ weeks of golfing weather here in NorCal so we should be okay.

Either way, I'm interested in seeing everyone's setups.

After the quote we just got to build a 3rd stall, my plan/dream might be on hold for a bit. Yikes. Hoping it was just an aggressive/bad quote.

Currently have a Skytrak. Like it most of the time. There are some issues here and there but overall it's great for the price. Run TGC19 on it and have access to way to many courses to count.

The enclosure is 10x8 feet with a 3 ft forward extension. Screen I purchased from a guy selling online (not sure brand but works great).
I owned my own projector.
Alienware computer
Fiberbuilt hitting mat
Roxor Controller

Here's a little vid of my wife playing the other night. We have it set up in our garage.

I have all the pieces for my garage simulator. My problem right now is getting the Basic E6 connect yearly ($300) connected to my lap top. I then will have to get the Mevo+, the lap top and projector hooked up to work together with my wi-fy in the garage. I believe I can handle it once I get the e6 connect hooked up (downloaded) to my lap top. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to computers. I'm not totally ignorant that way but closer to ignorant than an IT whiz.

After over a year of bringing it up and brainstorming for the right spot my financial planner finally started to get on board. My setup will be a 9.5 ft height clearance with a 10 ft wide screen and about 18 feet of space.

For those that have retractable sim projector screens do you find much bounce back? I need to be able to setup and tear down quickly but also don't want balls bouncing all over the concrete if they bounce off too far. The weight of the mat I'm not worried about but just wondering if a roll of artificial turf would be needed to put down in front of the screen to extend the 'catch' area for balls to fall into.
