I mark right behind the ball but not touching. I use a poker chip generally so I can get close without touching the ball.

That's my understanding, too, so it's probably not acceptable. : clown:Isn’t that an accidental movement of the ball, and under the new rules you can replace without penalty? I thought that was one of the main points it was addressing. But maybe I’m wrong
Some chatter in the latest tournament thread begs the question to me, what the appropriate way to mark a golf ball is, or at least what you believe is the right way.
Do you bury the coin basically touching the ball?
Do you drop the coin to where the ball (looking straight down) is flush with the coin?
Do you believe there is only one way (your way obviously lol) to mark the ball?
hahaha "under" the ball. I read what you read briefly.
So you move the ball when marking? Hummmmm.....
Nearly touching, I would not penalize myself or an opponent for a small inadvertent movement of the ball.

Y’all will love this one..... most casual rounds I don’t mark it unless it’s in someone’s way. I don’t line my ball up any particular way for putts, so unless I need to clean it or move it for someone, I just play it as it lies.
That oughta make for some sad shaking of the heads, lol.
Have any of you guys every considered marking ahead of the ball instead of behind it?
This. If in a match I'll pay a little more attention when placing/removing marker so I don't move the ball.I place it in from behind as close as I can get without touching the ball.
