Yesterday my new Titleist 710 AP2 3-PW (2* flat) w/ KBS Tour stiff shafts arrived. Needless to say, I was excited so I headed to the course with a buddy to give them a whirl.
Because absolutely no one demanded it, here is my review!
Price - Insanely high even though I got a pretty good deal.
Looks - This one is pretty objective, but I love the look of these clubs. They are sleek, yet classic. The topline is thin-ish and just sets up nicely to my eye.
Feel - These are forged so they are super buttery! Okay...so I have never hit a ball with butter, so I really don't know what that would feel like, but I think at this point we have to rank everything on the butter-meter, right? In all seriousness these clubs feel great through the entire swing and most of what I 'feel' is compliments of the amazing KBS Tour shafts. Don't get me wrong, the club feels great at impact and gives a nice sound (but the ball plays as big a part in this as the club)...but for me feel is more about the sensation of the shaft loading/unloading, and the weight of the club through the full range of motion.
Performance - So here is where these clubs really shine for me. My first hole, which was my first swing using any AP2 resulted in a birdie so that should tell you something. The turf interaction is wonderful (I take a small/mid divot with my irons) as the club does not get hung up along the way. Trajectory is exactly what I was looking for: something mid (or maybe even mid-high) that won't balloon on me. Dispertion seems nice and tight, allowing for a tiny draw throughout the set. This is also my first time hitting a 3-iron for a 205 yard uphill par 3, and I had no trouble with it (with the exception of muscling up on my swing).
Unfortunately, a pretty bad storm rolled in as we finished up the 5th hole. Granted I am totally in the honeymoon phase, but so far I am loving these irons.
I did the smart thing and was fitted. It made all the difference in the world. The Mizuno shaft optimizer gave me options of KBS Tour stiff, True Temper Dynalite XP, or Project X 5.5 and I am very pleased with my selection. It turns out that I also needed my setup to be 2* flat (which explains my disdain for par 3's with my prior set as they were standard and everything wanted to duckhook).
