Project X Even Flow Riptide Shaft

Was able to hit the Riptide small batch today in a Cobra 3w and it was much better than I felt in the first riptide I tried when I was testing out shafts for my Epic Flash Subzero. Really had a nice feel to hit. Extra stiff but still could feel the loading and unloading of the shaft. gave me the 2nd highest ball speeds.

So regarding the Evenflow Riptide CB, I only got an hour to spend with it last night so I still don't have a perfect feel for it yet. I'm going on Saturday and will be using both the standard and CB and will be able to put more info in here. But for now I just wanted to give a quick rundown of the CB.

First thing that I could feel was the obvious counter balancing. That may sound silly but in something like the Hzrdus Smoke Yellow, I don't feel it as much. That very well could be a "me" thing but I just wanted to point it out. Second thing is I don't want post a ton of numbers yet until I can compare it to the standard Riptide in a head to head this weekend. I can say that everything compared to my normal Epic Flash gamer with a standard Riptide definitely had differences. Swing speed, ball speed, launch, spin and dispersion all were noticeably different in a good way. I am using a different head with the CB, the TM SIM, so it won't be an apples to apples comparison though. I will be putting a Mav head in to the Standard Riptide this weekend so at least I will be using the same year of drivers even though they are different OEMs.

What I will say at the moment with this shaft is when I strike the ball well, the dispersion is tight. Everything landed in a 15-20 yard radius with my worst offline shot, with a decent swing that is, being no more than 13 yards offline. My normal launch was between 12 and 17 degrees and I feel like with more time, and more warmed up swings, that I can normalize that a little more. Spin was a little high for me at 2800 but I will have a better idea if that is normal or not this weekend.

Like I said, I only had an hour last night and that hour wasn't spend strictly on this shaft and driver. I will have way more information on it after Saturday night. But for now, I really feel like this shaft is going to be just as good for me if not better than the standard Riptide. And that thing is already an absolute beast.

this is going to be great to hear the head to head

can you specify the exact shafts - 60, 6.0 ? etc so we can get the best sense of performance.
appreciated!

Stability to me. The Previous line I loved the feel of, but it felt a little loose to me during transition. I have the same transfer now, but with more stability. It has led to me finding the center a bit more.

I don’t know if that is one of the talking points, but specifically for me, that is what I am seeing.
This is pretty much what I’m seeing as well. Having a 50 gm offering in an S flex is kind of a win/win for me. I can pick up some clubhead speed and still mange to find the fairway more often.

I just built up this shaft for a Callaway MAVRIK driver to test out soon.

I just put a Cobra tip on one!

Got to hit a Riptide in both the Mavrik, Mav Max, and the 3+. Super impressed with how it was working out for me. Felt quite stable for my swing.

It’s so so so good

I currently play the stock Riptide in the Mavrik and really like it. Not sure it's the best option for me as I did not get fitted. However, I really dig the looks of the CB. I may seriously have to look into one of those.

I didn't like Riptide in my Titleist but I love it in the Mavrik SZ I tested. That thing was a rocket launcher.

*cough* better driver *cough* :devilish:

I had the counterbalanced version of this shaft in my driver yesterday. What a gorgeous shaft, blue with that Riptide design. It might be the best looking non-custom shaft I have ever seen, although I understand that my view is subjective.

What was not subjective is the performance. I didn’t hit the range first and hooked my first drive and then left my next one right. After that, I felt the timing and I started hitting some of the best looking balls off driver I have seen this year.

This shaft seems to hit that rare combination for me of feeling really good, not boardy, but still keeping the spin where I need it. I am so impressed.

So on Saturday I went to the simulator to test out an Evenflow Riptide 60g 6.0 (Mavrik head) and an EF Riptide CB 60g 6.0 (SIM head) head to head. I know with different heads, the comparisons don't work perfectly but I am just working with what I have and hoping to get others some information that they may be looking for. Especially since THP is like the only place you can find any reviews of this shaft.

A little background, I've been hitting the standard Riptide in my Epic Flash all winter in our simulator league so I'm very familiar with this shaft and it has been an absolute performer. I've been wanting a SIM for awhile and when I saw that the CB was an option with no upcharge, I thought it would work just fine since I've been getting along with the standard for some time now.

So Saturday, I get to the course and start getting warmed up. Wedges, irons and driver just to make sure that I'm swinging well before I start. Now before I get to my numbers below I want to explain why I only used six swings for each driver for my data. I began the test and had a very poor mishit and went to go remove that drive from my data. I realized the setting our course has our sims set to doesn't allow data to be removed because we sign in as guests when we get there. Only the head pro has an actual login, and you need to be logged in to be able to remove shots from your practice session. Seeing as I was unable to remove shots, I had to swing until I had enough shots to have decent data while not pushing too much and risking a mishit. I'm obviously not a pro so mishits happen regularly and I didn't want to ruin the data. I was able to get six solid shots in a row for each driver and those are the numbers below.

MAVRIK - RIPTIDE 60g 6.0
Clubhead speed average - 98MPH

SIM - RIPTIDE CB 60g 6.0
Clubhead speed average 103mph

Not being able to remove outlier shots really handicapped my testing and for that I apologize. My dispersion numbers were affected by this (see my bad shot with the SIM going 95 feet right). So take what you see with a grain of salt. What I can tell you without numbers though is about the feel of the shafts. Everything everyone has said in this thread about the standard Riptide is right on the money. The best part about it is how stable it feels through the swing and how under control it feels without feeling whippy or like a board. It strikes a perfect balance to me and I for one wouldn't hesitate about putting the Riptide in to any club in the future. It really does feel that good.

Saying that though, it's not the winner for me anymore. The CB version of it is hands down my favorite shaft I've ever swung. It's hard to describe but you really can feel difference in the shafts just by holding them side by side. It's not a ton but I could honestly feel the weight in the grip end and how "light" it made the head feel. My swing speed isn't high enough for the inertia generator fin on the SIM to matter that much. My 5 mph of swing speed increase between clubs absolutely had to do with the shaft and how I really felt able to go after swings while keeping it under control.

These shafts obviously won't fit the profile of everyone. They are mid-mid on launch and spin and if that's not what you're needing in a shaft, these might not be your best option. But if those are the profiles you get along with, I can't recommend either of these shafts more. They are both absolute beasts and I'm so happy I've been able to find them. I hope my long winded post helps some of you thinking about getting either of these shafts (y)

Great info and write up!

Picked up an uncut Small Batch for 130. Couldn’t say no, sure as hell didn’t need it though haha.

Had mine cut down a half inch, and put a tour velvet + 4 grip. Changed how I gripped the club a bit today to overcome some swing challenges, and then had a go at the range.

Wow, this shaft loaded some serious bombs. I felt much much more confident with it. I’m still going to test my black tie, and have a rogue white shaft coming in, but this is going to be a serious contender to be the gamer.

Small batch is going to get a *gasp* Tour Edge *gasp* adapter in order to do some final fun testing wise on the 220 and be the baseline for the EXS vs 220 comparison.

Most under talked about shaft design on the market right now.

Still really liking the Riptide in my Mav Max. Keep wanting to try out The Attas in the Max to compare but finding it hard to pull the Riptide.

And that's kind of wild considering it's a solid stock offering in some popular clubs. Do you think it's suffering a bit in the sense that some people turn their nose up at the stock offerings? Or, maybe those that have it are just not the talkative type? As a disclaimer, I have not hit it myself. Never got a chance during my fitting.

The original evenflow was a great shaft. I had a lot of success with it in my 3 wood. I do want to try this eventually when I'm able to secure a demo from a Callaway demo rep I know.

Honestly, I think that the stock offering is a big reason when it comes to chatter on forums where we are the minority, and often times snobs to stock shafts. Why it’s not getting the love that HZRDUS did there, I’m not sure, though HZRDUS wasn’t immediately a stock offering like this so maybe it maintained some of that allure.

All I know is I’ve played it in driver, 3w, and 5w all to some truly fantastic results

it's gotta be blue if it's gonna go on the exs220 driver, tho

I can see that being the case. I have been guilty of that in the past myself though I try to keep an open mind. I've seen a lot of Mavrik drivers on the course this year with that shaft. So I know it's getting play. Just not as much with us gear heads I suppose.

I think a lot of that is deep seeded memories of Titleist specific Diamanas, TM specific Fuji, Callaway specific RIP (which was an absolute noodle for me). Etc, etc. I know things are different now. But, sometimes, as an equipment enthusiast, it's hard not to jump right to the buzz of some if these higher end offerings.

True Temper has done a great job bringing some amazing stock options. They probably stand out the most to me. And it could be because of the entire HZRDUS line, like you said. The fact that it started out as one of the hottest shafts on tour and then made it's way into a no charge option probably helped it's image.

I think the biggest issue is that with the stock offering in these shafts you are seeing lots of their light weight options. your 50g 5.5 45g 4.5 options very regularly. So if you are a decent player with decent swing speed you are going to immediately bypass them. Plus, your boutique fitters, cool clubs, TXG, club champioin I am guessing are not going to be putting this shaft in front of many people.
