    5 iron vs 5 hybrid

So I am trying to properly gap my clubs and wondering if I should be looking at carrying both a 5 iron and a 5 hybrid...

    My 5 iron is 25* and 37.75"
My 5 hybrid would be 25* and 39.75"

So my question is, would the larger club head and added 2" get me another 10-15 yards of distance?

i find the 22* at 40.25" would probably create too big a gap.

what do most of you do after your 5 iron?

Theoretically, the 5 hybrid will be longer than your 5 iron due to the longer shaft. How much, that depends on a multitude of things. Do you have the ability to get accurate distances on all 3 of the clubs mentioned? Just based on what I have found, carrying all 3 clubs, probably the 4 and 5 hybrid with the 5 iron, is going to give you good gapping. Keep us up to date, I plan on potentially carrying a similar setup this year.

I'm battling what to do in my bag at the 5i spot as well.

Most will see a hybrid of the same loft as an iron go further distance wise because of the launch and yes also the length of the club.

For me, when I replace an iron with a hybrid at the 5i spot I usually go a degree or so weaker, so my hybrid for the 5i would be a 28* instead of 26*, its what has always worked best for me. BUT, aaaaaafter the 5i in the bag as you are talking I've actually carried a 5i and 5h because it got me the distance gaps I wanted compared to a 4h.

In the end, the best advice IMO is just know your distance gaps and hit what you want there without worrying the number on the sole of the club, iron or hybrid .

I was also thinking of a 22 or 23* with a shorter shaft because I am worried the 25* might balloon a bit.

I am also looking for another hybrid, arpund 19* to get me around 210-220.

I normally play my 5 iron from 185 off a tee or 180 off the fairway.

I like hybrids in place of longer irons. Longer distance wise, and just as accurate. I'm going with hybrids in place of woods for now, all the way down to a 3 wood loft. More accurate and almost as long. Accuracy first for me.

My "3 hybrid" is 21 degrees and my 4 iron is 20 degrees and i have a 10-15 yard gap. Higher launch and longer club do it for me. However the more consistent I am getting with both the more I find the gap seems to be shrinking. I am thinking more of a 19 degree hybrid at some point to increase the gap a bit and bridge to the 3wood a bit better.

I have my hybrids fit right in line with my irons - I use them as iron replacements. My 6 iron is 30* and 38" and my 5 hybrid is 26* and 38 3/8" (I use 3/8" steps rather than 1/2").

I hit my 5 hybrid a bit farther then my 5I but I been pondering about dropping the 5 hybrid because it can get a pretty wild sometimes. I would rather lose some distance and be more accurate.

I had the same concern with my new set of clubs. I went with 3-5 hybrids and 6-9 irons for my new set. I noticed the 5 hybrid was noticeably longer than my 5 iron and thus created a gap between the 6 iron and 5 hybrid, so I started choking down on the 5 hybrid, and that helps close the gap enough that I am happy with it and no longer feel the need to add a 5 iron to my bag.

Currently I have been contemplating dropping my 5i for a 5H as well, mostly because I don't feel comfortable hitting it. But lately I just end up choking down on my 4H an inch or so to get my desired 5i distance. Since there are times when I choke down on my 5i to get a distance between my 6i and 5i. It really depends on what fits your gaps and what you feel comfortable doing. In my case, I rather avoid putting another hybrid in the bag and keep things simpler for me.

hey guys, I too have been wanting to drop my 5 iron for hybrid as well, for all the reasons given in this thread.

however, what I'm wondering is if it will truly replace the distance that I was using 5 iron for.

Should I get a 5 hybrid and chop it down? go with a 6 hybrid as 5 iron replacement? Am comfortable with 6 iron and up it seams but 5 gives me trouble.

I had a pretty big gap between my 5 hybrid and 6 iron, so I added a 6 hybrid and dropped my 60 wedge.

during my short stint with my ping i25s, i wasn't getting much out of my 4i so i put a 5h in the bag based on a fitter's recommendation. i kept the 5i, and the gapping was fairly close, so the 5h was really a replacement for my 4i. but with my j15 df irons, i'm hitting my 5i as long and often longer than the 5h, so the top of my bag may be re-worked AGAIN. i mean, why not? it's only money...

+1 I was debating 5H and/or 5I late last year/early this and came to this same conclusion.

For me, I don't think there's that big a gap distance-wise between my 5I and 5H and whatever distance difference there is can be accomodate by choking down a bit. My question was really more about trajectory as the 5I has a lower trajectory so when I want to play into the wind, for rollout or need to hit it low, it is easier. I have found that I can manipulate the 5H to attain much of that. On the (big) plus side for the 5H, I think my strikes are more consistent with it than my 5I (both distance and accuracy). I am really confident with it from 175-190 out. For example, I hit it into the wind 178 the other day to pin high 18" right. With a 5I I would have felt I needed to muscle it to get it there in that wind.
