If you like to have options, then there has never been a better time to be a golfer. While that is true of clubs, it might be even more so when discussing apparel. There has never before been as many different companies on the scene offering the breadth of looks, materials, and styles that we are seeing right now. Today, THP is shedding light on another such brand, Grun Golf
Who is Grun Golf?
To immediately answer the collective thoughts of those reading about just what kind of a name is Grun, well, it is in fact the German word for green. There is where you find the roots to the story behind the brand as they fall squarely into the category of aiming to create fashion options in golf that are more “green” through recycled materials. It is a fitting name as “green” is something that we associate with the good in the world and nature around us including life, nature, renewal, and of course, the environment.
Grun Golf wants to not only be part of the growing “ethical fashion” segment in golf, but to be a pioneer in it. Frankly, that ambition is nice to hear. We were able to get two of Grun’s new polo options in hand for a closer look.
Grun Golf – “Maui” Polo
While not everyone is a pattern kind of person when it comes to their polos, I definitely am, so the Maui was a fun one to get in hand. The island and palm tree driven theme obviously shines through here, but it keeps it fun and not overly gaudy.
The Maui is priced at $75.00 and is available in S, M, L, XL, and XXL.
Grun Golf – “Green Apple” Polo
This one will appeal much more to the golfer who likes patterns but prefers them not to be as in your face. The Green Apple is a vibrant green, blue, and white pattern that looks good from a distance, but pops more the closer you get.
The Green Apple comes in S, M, L, XL, and XXL with a price of $75.00
Design and Fit
The shirts are both comprised of 92% recycled polyester and 8% spandex, which in hand gives them that silky mid-light feel which we now associate with more breathable polos. The makeup does make it wrinkle resistant and moisture wicking, while the 4-way stretch keeps things workable for swinging the golf club. Both shirts have nice stitching, the collars have substance, and the three-button placket is on par with the rest of the industry.
In terms of fit, they are more tapered and less square than other size L polo’s that I have, but still not a Euro cut. Compared to others I normally wear in the same size, it is more snug in the chest and core, so that is something to keep in mind sizing wise. This does mean that you could likely go up a size without feeling like you are swimming in it.
The Details
You can see these and Grun Golf’s other options on their website www.grungolf.com. While patterns and stripes are definitely their game right now, they seem to do a good job of providing options that run the gamut of mild to wild. It will be interesting to see there Grun goes from here.
I like the Maui print. Has to be such a tough market to survive in these days. I’m curious to see if anyone gives their gear a go.
I do like that it’s maybe a little more tapered fit without being too snug.
I like the looks of these shirts. Tough market to crack into with so many good ones out there
Decent shirts but very competitive market. Especially since it looks like they are sourcing from similar companies other online retailers are sourcing from (similar black tag as others)
Great intro to a new apparel company @jman. Based on your description of a silky feel, would you compare these to what Johnnie-O polo’s feel like? I like the designs and the Maui pushes the limit but not in one of those ways that leaves you saying oh my.
Not a lot that stands out to me at first glance, though the eco story is interesting. The website needs a little work to match the price the point.
Market is so saturated and at that price point you are running into some very well known and established brands. To stand out you need a certain aesthetic or really strong pricing. I do like the green apple pattern saying that but the fit is snug per the reviews so I’d have to size up.
The Maui is a little much for me print-wise. Do like the Green Apple.
Patterns look alright to me. Tapered fit without going full Euro is good. Although snug in certain sections definitely doesn’t work for me these days.
I think they look great!
Solid materials and patterns are SO critical in this game.
I kinda dig the logo. But this is pretty flat and more of the same for golf shirts these days. Doesn’t grab be at all.
Good stuff, James. I am a fan of patterned polos paired with solid shorts. Both of those you featured look fantastic. Looking over their site they have a 20% off first order as well as some AWESOME sales right now!
Also, I need some light blue paisley in my life…

Little heavier material weight in hand imo.

I wouldn’t get hung up on a tag looking the same.
Just a note, because before asking I went and reread the article, but thank you for always talking about how the sizing and fit is when you fellas do apparel reviews. It’s appreciated.

I like a polo that has some heft in it. Some these days are just too thin.

Yeah, I don’t care for the ultralight stuff we see most of the time, I’m more of that mid-weight camp.

some of that stuff out there now is like two-ply
Not a fan of their name, but those are 2 nice looking polos. And at a reasonable price point to boot.
Great timing. The Grint had a deal with Grun Golf for a B1G1 deal last week, in addition to being 20 or 30% off for Black Friday. So I got 2 for $50. I’ll let you know what I think when they get here.
Looks OK, but will probably never think of it again, as there are just too many options available. Has to be noticeably better quality and price than FJ to get my ongoing attention.
I like options, but the golf apparel landscape is super saturated right now.

I agree. But what do you do? More blade collars?

It’s definitely less tent sized than FJ.

Most things are less tent sized than FJ.
They look ok, as others have said the market is so saturated. Plus seems like Instagram makers pop up all the time.

Enough material for two shirts, at the price of three.
I find some of the comments interesting, as I wouldn’t necessarily lump them into the instagram pop up company category….
Nice review @Jman. I do like their prints but definitely a tough business environment with all of the similar product out there.
I do like the recycled fabric component. Are there other brands doing that with golf polos currently?
Will be interesting to see how the recycled fabric feels and holds up compared to the new stuff.

Me too, but standard FJ is circus tent size.
Thankfully, they have two versions now.
