The new team golf league backed by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s TMRW Sports is kicking off in January. The 7th to be exact and the first three Tuesday’s of the year it will be featured on ESPN and ESPN+ in the US.
The TGL brings six teams made up of PGA Tour players competing in a form of team golf with in the custom So-Fi Center on the campus of Palm Beach St.
“As we plan the 2025 launch of TGL presented by SoFi, we now have the first three Tuesdays in January circled to introduce sports fans to this new form of team golf. January is a tremendous time of year for fans looking for prime time sports and TGL’s launch will complement the start of the PGA TOUR season and take advantage of ESPN’s promotional machine across their coverage of the NFL and college football playoffs,” said Mike McCarley, founder and CEO of TMRW Sports. “We’re grateful for our tremendous partner SoFi, who shares in our vision to harness technology to create new approaches within traditional institutions. As construction proceeds on SoFi Center, we’re eager to introduce sports fans to TGL as we focus on the league’s debut this coming January.”
Most will remember the TGL was set to begin earlier this year before the roof collapsed on the new arena. Thankfully nobody was harmed, but the league acted swiftly and moved the start back a year. This is allowing for more promotion and fine tuning and we expect the technology filled fast paced action to cause quite a stir early on.
The SoFi Center features a 3000 sq ft screen that measures 144 feet. It won’t be all hitting onto a screen however. Once teams make their way inside the 50 yard mark, it will transition to a live action area with in the GreenZone that is nearly 25,000 square foot short game complex that literally transforms between holes.
Every shot taken can be broadcast live and teams will be playing with a 40 second shot clock and because of that, we are thankful a few of the slower participants on the PGA Tour are not part of this. If you have not checked out the formats, TGL has it all ready for the masses broken down, here.
The six teams kicking off the 2025 TGL league are Atlanta Drive GC, Boston Common Golf, Jupiter Links Golf Club, Los Angeles Golf Club, TGL New York and TGL San Francisco. While there does not appear any real ties to the individual cities, will you find yourself rooting based on geography or players involved?
Once nicknamed the “Screen League”, where do you stand on TGL? Will you be tuning in live to the action? Do you hope there is a gambling proponent to it during any live events taking place? Do you have a favorite team yet
I still don’t know who’s fully on each team – I was looking it up and not all of the teams are listed so I can’t say my favorite team yet.
I can’t help but think this never gets off the ground.
Would be disappointing if it doesn’t. The amount of names involved both as owners and players though, that would be a pretty big train wreck
I agree. I just keep thinking the pro golf landscape is going to completely change again before next year.
It’s going to be real cool. I’m pumped for it
This is my feeling as well. I want to watch, and am excited for it, but if/when it does get going, I have a feeling my expectations are going to be too high for what is delivered.
I am just over the pro golfer cash grab.. It is too much any more.. I dont fault them and if in their shoes, I would probably be trying to do the same thing. But as a fan, I am over it.
It’s just another attempt at getting golf in to the prime time spot during the week. Even the biggest golf fans arent super interested.
Tbh, the last 24 months of professional golf has sort of pushed my enjoyment of the professional game to the side a little (albeit I did go the open..!), so I’ll give it a go but not bouncing of the walls in excitement
