Two weeks ago, Mizuno unveiled the JPX 921 line of irons and if you missed our preview, check it out here. Over the last two weeks, we have been busy in the THP Tech Studio putting each of the four sets to the test.
The lineup consists of the Hot Metal, Hot Metal Pro, Forged and Tour. We wanted to not only tell you about the results, but show you the testing and talk you through some swings.
In the video below, we take each set for a test drive and talk a little bit about the tech, but go a step further and compare all four to each other in the wrap up with all of the data.
After watching the swings and hearing about the clubs, which set do you think fits best for your game?

My wife has the 4, 5 and 6 in the Fli Hi hybrid/iron replacement. They have really made it easy for her to get plenty of distance with some elevation in this part of her bag. The shorter length than a regular hybrid makes them much more predictable for Kirsten. I‘ve tried the demo head with my shaft in it and they are just silly easy to hit. I’m pondering a 4 Fli Hi.
I have the 5-GW 921 HM Pros with Nippos 950 Neo R flex. For the 3H, I have the PXG 0211 PX Riptide R Flex.
I got the 4H Fli-Hi, same shaft as the irons and I’m having a really hard time with them. Once in a while a decent shot but many times, a slight fade at the end. I have no issues with the 5 iron or the longer 3H. It’s the least dependable club, I’m going to keep trying for another few weeks and might end up with a PXG or G425 4H instead.
I was watching a youtube video where they interviewed a Mizuno rep and the fitter said he was going to recommend to his clients that they soft step the 4H to get a bit more height and make it easier to launch. I think I should of done that.
The results speak for themselves, I knew this club would be a beast when the summer came round. It’s only the beginning of summer and it’s completely blown my expectations out of the water.
It is routinely challenging my reasoning to play the driver or 3 wood.
The combination with the KBS C-Taper gives me the confidence to just get after it without fear of a wild shot, something that every real driving iron never managed to do sadly.
Today I hit one over 300 yards. Never did I ever think that would be possible if I am honest. Yes there was a perfect set of circumstances to allow it to happen but the club gives me the confidence to believe it could happen again.
In a word; smitten.

This has been my experience to almost a tee.
Who knows, 9 holes scheduled today but not sure if I will put the HMP’s in the bag or not or just sell since they mostly have not been hit (only swing the 5,7,9).
So you are saying if I want to move mine when the Cobra gear hits I should let you know first?
My impression are that they launch a Touch higher, so may be beneficial in long irons?
I would base the choice on offset only. I picked the HMP because I tend to hook.
Exactly what I am trying to figure out. Thanks very much.
The funny part is, I think I liked offset, I tend to fade the HMP…haha… my friend got the HM and I got the HMP, true the HMP is slightly smaller but I don’t think it’s enough to make a difference. I tried to like the Forged but I was hitting the HMP better and it was cheaper, so I went HMP.
Now while the result was good I’m struggling to find that consistent distance like all the other clubs have been.???? The PW has averaged 134 and my 8 iron 156 yards.
Could just be golf, no?
But why the huge discrepancy on just the 9 iron. I guess is what I’m asking. No other club has a 30 yard distance gap swing to swing.
Hold impact be playing a role?
I’m not sure. But I don’t think I’m swinging it any harder than any other swing. I’ve over shot so many greens lately it’s becoming discouraging.
Check loft?
I’ve thought of that. But I’m hitting is so much higher than the 8 iron. I’m perplexed. I will have to check with the club pro if I can use his launch monitor and see what kind of numbers I get.
Check the data, besides, loft, have someone check weight of club, swing weight, and check cpm’s of shaft.
Compare with 8i
I love the look, love the feel of the perfectly struck ball….. but right now on partial swings I put more balls off the toe or hosel than anywhere close to the face. Partial swing GW used to be my go to, but it has me scared as all heck right now.
Need to get on an actual course. Hate the range. Need to play some actual golf!!!
Nice. Let us know how it goes.
Well I didn’t play great today but i found the Forged GW very useful and versatile. I have been playing a Vokey SM7 in that spot so in comparison I found the Mizuno Forged GW to be more forgiving and confidence inspiring on full swings and also very useful around the greens. It doesn’t spin like the Vokey but the feel is very good. I will definitely keep it in the bag and give it some more playing time.
I was taking nice divots which I was a little concerned about prior to hitting with the wider soles. The ball flight performance was incredible. Maybe more GI than I require and certainly longer. They are flying high enough to hold greens for sure even if they are lower spin that what I am used to (MP20 HMB). I will report back after the weekend rounds on actual distances and on-course performance, but I think this was a good decision for me as I was falling behind playing partners by 1-2 clubs on irons even though I can usually outdrive them.
I was slightly disappointed – contrary to some reports – these clubs do not hit themselves…
I could have easily gone HMP or 921F, but I thought I would try the full GI experience and see where it gets me. I’m up to 13.3 right now. I need some help.
I committed to hitting most of my chips and pitches in league play last night with the GW and it was up to the task. I was enjoying it. It’s great to get back a solid gap wedge or pitching wedge for those somewhat runners. My old GI irons felt too trampoline like for me to get comfortable with distance control. Completely in my head, but once it’s there….
Still sold on the 921 Forged as a whole as well!
Luckily using Shipsticks, you can’t keep wavering and just have to make a decision.
The forged irons are great, but the 8i got the work out yesterday. Spin was good, feel was amazing and I hit the yardages I needed. My GIR is still mediocre, but that is all me. These clubs are helping me maximize forgiveness on my mishits and when struck well, just leave me easy putts for birdie or par.
I think my struggles with my 9 iron was a result of over swinging. At the range the other day, the smooth tempo yielded shots in the 140 to 145 yard range. which is what I’m looking for as far as gapping. I swung hard on a couple of shots and cleared the 150 sign. Still think it might have a hot face compared to the PW or the 8 iron.
The Forged are a smaller profile than many tend to expect IMO, down into that 4 and 5 they have a look to them that surprises anyone who swings my setup. They’re ball speed makers, but they’re not going to be the most forgiving, maybe blend in a HM down there?
Interesting – I am probably going to see how it goes for a bit and then consider dropping in some full on hybrids to gain some distance.
These will surprise you in their ball speed, they’re fast, chronology is like magic. Haha
These will surprise you in their ball speed, they’re fassssst. Chromoly is like magic.
The 4 iron asks questions of my ballstriking ability that at times I am unable to answer. There is a part of me that wishes I had stuck with my gut and not gotten sold on the 4 iron.
Although to be fair, I haven’t given it a good work out yet at the range. Mostly because who wants to hit 4 irons at the range!
Agreed. When I do catch the 4 iron the thing just goes.
I blended the HMP 4&5 and have been glad I did. I too frequently use the additional forgiveness in those clubs and feel like they still gap well with the 6 Forged. I certainly dont think the 4-5 Forged would be unplayable though.
Enjoy the new irons!
Yea – I definitely need to practice ball striking, and that is something that I expect these irons to really push me to do given the shift from shovels to these slightly more players-profiled irons.
Sadly I have to wait 6-8 weeks to get these in, and then we begin to rebuild the game.
Those black shafts are HOT. If I had known I could have gotten those I would have gone for it.
Sorry it was the Aerotech Steel Fiber shaft. I might go for another fitting as I do not know if I want to pay an extra $50 per club for the shaft upcharge.
And the feel
