Back in January of last year, Mizuno introduced the ST-X 230 and ST-Z 230 Drivers. If you missed our coverage of that release, you can find it here. Fast forward to September, the uber customizable ST-G 230 hit hte market. You can read all about that release on THP here.
Some might have thought that the ST-230 line up of drivers was complete. Mizuno still had a little more Speed Technology (ST) to go and this four year journey that began with ST-190 in 2019 has been quite a follow.
Some might say the release was a bit quiet. Others are saying, its exactly what Mizuno needed to complete the ST-230 lineup. The ST-Max is here and rather than breakdown all of the tech, we decided to visit Mizuno HQ and have Chris Voshall go over the entire lineup.
Mizuno ST-Max and Breaking Down the ST Drivers

Mizuno does make some nice classic looking clubs

it’s an angle. Here it is set up in a neutral position. On the measuring device it’s close to dead neutral

It’s early in the season for you though right?

We play in the winter but were frozen and then had snow for a total of 8-9 weeks. Now everything is aerated ?

Right so I’m going to be really interested in your results when you’ve had a chance to really warm the swing back up

Agreed. Mine at the setup I mentioned looks slightly closed when I have a proper grip on it. Your picture looks slightly closed to me as well. This is still the most amazing driver at address I’ve ever played.

I’m going to hit it on the GC2 so I’ll get some ball speed and rpm numbers.
Here’s some good shots and I threw in one of my miss that’s “hooky” for comparison. The last three are with my LST 410 with the same shaft but 65g and 10.5* turned a little down, also with a hooked miss. For comparison. I’m too tired now to hit any with the Stealth 2+. I never hit this many drivers in a row!

Ok, I lied. Told myself just hit 1 shot with the Stealth and here it is. Now I’m truly done. We did CrossFit this morning so kinda spent.
Had a guy, I know well, want to try the STMax 10.5 from the cart. Since I know him well and he knows what he’s looking for, I set it and he went and hit a few shots. Came back and said, “I’m Sold”. He bought it saying you can hit this thing all over the face and still end up good, it unseated my QI35.
Of course different people, different results…I have one in my bag and will say probably the most forgiving and consistent drivers I have ever hit.
Love the ST-Max 230 driver!! Lol.
I had my best driving day in a looong time with this today. To preface, I choked down to play it an inch shorter to test before I trim the shaft down, added a couple pieces of lead tape to the heel and turned the loft up 1 setting which it played at 11.625° of loft and 1.5° closed. Besides my first drive on hole 1 of the day and the season, which was sliced trying to get the feel of the new adjustment and not being warmed up, I was pretty happy how my driving went today. Hit 7/14 fairways and some were only 5-10 yards in the rough. So I was stoked how this played for me! Once I got warmed up and got my swing in the right place, I was getting compliments on the accuracy off the tee, which isn’t very often in the past. Haha. I didn’t hit in the center every time but heel and toe hits were kept in check for the most part. But I hit the center more than usual. That’s for sure. My confidence was high driving off the tee for once in long time. ?
Very happy that I finally switched my driver out to this after a failed attempt last year with it… I wish I could gain some more distance but I don’t have a high swing speed and I’m okay with that. It is what it is. Accuracy is top priority at this time until I get the rest of my game settled in. Can’t wait for the next round!

Barely in the rough? Heck, I’m happy keeping it on the same hole I’m playing!!! We call the other side “fairway B” ?

I’m definitely a slicer more than not. But I only sliced 2 out of 14 shots… Not that bragging about slicing the ball in any way is good. Haha. But this driver gave me a ton of confidence to be able to keep it in play more than usual.
Bought this driver for a song at the golf town demo sale.
Is effectively brand new and came with the linq red shaft overall I could hit some real bombs with it but if I swung a bit too hard I would overload it and can get a snap hook or two.
I just bought a LINQ white shaft from a fellow THPer.
It might have been tipped half an inch and I needed to get it slightly extended to match the stock length of this driver. Had a chance to hit it today comparing it to the new Cobra line.
Truthfully hit this straighter and equally as far. More importantly with the LINQ White I could not make it go left everything was either dead straight to a slight fade without the spin going up.
Lil update from my round today. Recap: 9.5*, Tensei Orange 55 X. Never played a driver shaft so light in weight but the shaft is counterbalanced and feels pretty “normal” to me. Anyhoo, based on my LM data, I wanted more spin and loft so I went with the “STD” setting. It looks closed to me, and I like a REALLY open club. Vijay Singh open so around 5* open looks good to me. I’ll never forget when I was warming up (way back in 2009) on the range at THE Olympic club in San Francisco and the member I was playing with asked to hit this Sonartec SS-03 7w I was hitting. He set it down and said, “woah, what is that, 7* open?” I liked it because it looked square to me. LOL.
Anyway, set to standard and when I finally got to a driver hole (6 on this course), I hit what I thought was a stinky shot. Ended up long and in the fairway. Next hole I striped another one. Hooked the next but it was safe and hooked the one on 9 as well but also safe and playable. then on 10, I HOOKED IT AGAIN! Now these are all playable but not what I’m looking for. I decide to go for the big fade swing on 11 since this is a hole with two fairways and going to the left with a fade means closer to the green. Beautiful shot, 299 yards. Unfortunately I only par’d the hole but this thing was showing what it could do if a better player was swinging it!
Unfortunately 12-18 aren’t driver holes for me so I didn’t get to hit it again, but when I put a good swing on it, I’m loving the results. Here’s my Arccos replay of hole 11, even though it’s a little embarrassing to only earn a par after that drive. I putted the third shot but definitely should have used a bump and run as confirmed after the hole was finished. It was further from the cart path than it looks in the satellite image. Note: winter, WET, and we are only playing the middle tees right now.

Well, I’m going to continue to game the driver and see how it does “pre-season”. But I can help sharing pictures of what might be one of the finest looking fairways ever created by mankind. Note the shaft in both.

These will be $240 this afternoon at Loggerhead Golf and the ST-Z, ST-X, and the ST-G drivers.
How much difference between ST Max and the ST190 I have? I will concur the ST Max fairway is great looking and a great club
