Back in January, we got a look at the new Cobra KING Tour irons with MIM technology at the PGA Show. Then a couple of months later, a pandemic happened that changed the landscape of the golf industry. Today, these irons that have been often discussed, but not available, become official.
Metal Injection Molding (MIM) technology is not brand new, but we are seeing it more and more due to the precision that it creates. Most recently for Cobra, their wedge designs have been gaining in popularity in part due to the precision shaping and overall performance. Unlike traditional forging or casting, MIM manufacturing utilizes few steps to create.
In the case of the Cobra KING Tour irons, a mixture of 304 stainless steel powder is heated and injected into a mold. Heating to even a higher temperature than most forgings, the result, according to Cobra, is a very tight grain structure providing an incredibly soft feel. The MIM process requires only moderate polishing compared to forgings to ensure the shaping is completely consistent.
“We’ve used our MIM process over the past two years to deliver softer and more precisely-shaped designs in our wedges,” said Tom Olsavsky, Vice President of R&D for COBRA Golf.
“Now, in response to demand from better players and our Tour staffers, seeking the same benefits in a full set of irons, our R&D team delivered the KING TOUR Irons. These irons are softer than any forged offerings on the market, and like their wedge counterparts, offer better consistency in shaping for more precision shot-making on the course. While soft feel and consistency are important in the short-game, optimizing these attributes throughout an entire iron set will give golfers better performance across a wider range of shot selections.”
A tungsten weight is positioned in the toe of the club to perfect the center of gravity (CG) directly behind the impact zone. The ability to manufacture this way allows for precision, but also stability. Moving from the toe to the small cavity, a TPU Insert is directly behind the sweet spot to dampen vibrations a bit and enhance the feel even more.
Cobra Connect is still in place and might just be the best value add in golf. Powered by Arccos, the system utilizes smart grips to track your data through the round. Each set comes with a 90 day trial of the Caddie App as well. For the loft peepers spec fans out there, here is a look at the specs.

I’ve been complimentary of these from the start, I just had other new clubs.
Honestly, the numbers are just right where I like them, every time I hit one, and they feel and look good so it’s been a growing ponder. Had to do it.
I’m also a sucker for black shafts and good prices.

Ok, so I had a sim league round scheduled today. When my partner and I were warming up, the assistant pro walked in. Got to chatting with him about the new gear. He’s a Cobra staffer so I knew he’d have some info on their new offerings. He hadn’t had a chance to see the new woods yet. But, he told me they just got a demo set of the King Tour MIM’s. Being a gear head, I had to see them.
First things first, I noticed how clean they looked. If I had to compare them to a club I’ve held in the past, it would be the Apex Pro. Very much looks like a players iron. The chrome finish and the black pieces in the cavity really make it pop.
Behind the ball they look phenomenal. Minimal offset and a very pleasing thin top line. In fact, they may have less offset than the Apex Pros. At least visually. Blade length is about perfect. Maybe a touch longer than some other players irons. But, not egregious. For the low offset and thin top line, the blade looked confidence inspiring.
Now, the important part. They feel great. If I had to pick one word to describe it, it would be dense. Honestly, if I didn’t know they weren’t forged, I would have assumed they were after hitting them. In fact, they may actually feel softer than my Apex MB. At least a little less harsh. It’s like the ball absorbed into the face at impact before taking off. Very very high praise in that regard.
I don’t necessarily trust the numbers on this sim to quote them as a definitive performance indicator. But, the carry numbers seem pretty accurate as well as the ball speed. Spin has historically been a little untrustworthy. But, I hit it head to head, 7 iron to 7 iron with the Apex MB. Ball speed jumped 4-6mph and carry distance was about a club longer. Definitely feels more forgiving. And it seemed more consistent on average.
Honestly, they feel superb and Cobra has a definite winner on their hands. They seem to me to fit right in with the Apex Pro. A little bit longer, a little bit more forgiving. But, definitely looking like a true players iron. Now, knowing that my club will have this entire demo set on hand, I will for sure be bringing them out for some on course testing when things thaw out.

These irons were supposed to be under the tree for Christmas but plans changed for the better. Will be so hard to not play these in 5-GW. I like them better than any Mizuno or Taylormade offering. Srixon and Ping seem to be the only competition at this point.

I think there’s a fair-ish comparison to be made between them because of the size, shapes, offset, top lines, etc. They’re the same kind of visual ‘player’ style. For me the T100S are just a little longer, lower, less. I don’t have the numbers in front of me, but it’s nothing outside of what you’d expect. The king Tour are a better fit for me right now if decided by monitor numbers, and are an easier fit (I think) with what I’m trying to do shaft-wise. I don’t know for sure until I put them in play but I’m excited to. T100S are on their last go round. They look great, but I’m so over that feel. The first time I hit these I knew I was done with the T’s. These look and feel great, have a good amount of thump, and are a better spin window for me.

I can see your dilemma. Callys have the bag appeal win. The MIM appeal is good, maybe just not great.
Performance is “King” though…..so you def have to go with how your clubs perform for you. If the X CBs take it, then seems that is the way to go. MIMs look awesome behind the ball though. They remind me alot of the Wilson Staff blades actually, only much more friendly.
I’m super curious to see how you get on here. I’m kinda pulling for the MIMs to make a strong case for your bag.
BTW: what shafts do you have in the Callys….. PX IO is it? And the MIMs have $ tapers? Wonder if the shaft difference is a big factor for you….

The numbers will win out, and I did notice a small crack in the X Forged armor yesterday in the brutal cold. Knew it was there for me from the initial marketing, but it showed a bit.
Yes, IO 6.5 in the X Forged, which I love. Have them in my Apex MB too. $-taper 120 in the King Tours. Shouldn’t be a big factor. Based on monitor data, both setups get me right about where I like things. I have more IO’s now though, and another shaft set similar I’m curious about, in case I love most of what I’m getting from the Tours but think I might be missing just a bit. I’m more curious about the turf interaction and real world feel of the Tours than anything right now.
sidenote along those lines – [S]The KING Tours are kind of a MF’er to bend. Not unexpected at all, but I gave full permission to break the PW if necessary and they just only wanted to move so far.[/S] ** Read below, as the J’s have shed better light on this. 🙂 Cobras also tend to come a little upright compared to some, and people should take note of these things if buying a non-custom set.
