Survey - 2014 THP Events

I dont think there are enough members for an event in the PNW but maybe a destination like Bandon Dunes for a weekend would get THPers from all over the continent. I know I would make the long drive in that case.

What general area? Dallas/Ft.Worth
What time of year? April-June, Sept.-Nov. Really anytime but I think these are the best times
What type of event do you like? And why? Invitational's have been great. No need to mess with a great thing.
Do you think your area has enough THPers (AC Members) to fill an event? This area has a very active group and will have no problems filling an event.
Tell us your favorite golf courses in your area? A perfect course would be Winstar Golf Course
What about your area is perfect for an event? It has every amenity that you can think of even a casino.
How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event? 8hrs would be max.

Quoting this for near perfection! We have a really active group here that is continuously growing and I know we have some great friends all within 4-5hrs of us that would easily drive up here. Winstar would be an INCREDIBLE place for an invitational.

My drive time is probably about 8hrs as well, and in 2014 I will have alot more free time to attend events and I plan on doing so. Kansas, Florida, Vegas are all on my radar!

What general area? Alabama- RTJ Trail
What time of year? Would work fom March-Nov.
What type of event do you like? Invitational. It's a great format to meet and hang with THPrs but also gives you flexibility to make it a one day event.
Do you think your area has enough THPers (AC Members) to fill an event? Between AL, GA, LA, TN there are plenty.
Tell us your favorite golf courses in your area? While I think my home course at Magnolia Grove would be perfect I think logistically Prattville, Grand National, or Oxmoor Valley would be best for everyone else who is attending.
What about your area is perfect for an event? These are great courses that have hosted many professional and amateur events. Each site has multiple courses, a beautiful range , big clubhouses and tons of accomedations. The site in Prattville also has a Marriott attached to it and three incredible courses.
How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event? This year I'm driving/drove to Orlando and Myrtle Beach.

Phoenix or Vegas in February/March. Because all you east coasters need some sunshine and golf during your dreary winters.

2nd'd...though personally going beyond local, I think an event in Lake Tahoe would be a perfect excuse for a late-June vacation.

What general area? Phoenix
What time of year? late February/early March (before the big spring training crowds)
What type of event do you like? current, 2 person format seems best
Do you think your area has enough THPers (AC Members) to fill an event? borderline, but if during the Northern winter months, could see decent out-of-town attendees.
Tell us your favorite golf courses in your area? Whirlwind (2 courses + resort/casino); price could be a bit steep, though.
What about your area is perfect for an event? weather, amenities, airport access
How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event? 6 hours

What general area? DMV

What time of year? Late June - September (It's got to be around crab season)

What type of event do you like? And why? 4 man scramble. Though it will be fun no matter what, scramble helps bridge the gap between the high handicappers like myself and the skilled players.

Do you think your area has enough THPers (AC Members) to fill an event? There seems to be a few THPers in the DMV area. Also, the area is central in terms of the eastern seaboard so it wouldn't be too far for THP members from PA, NY, NJ, and NC.

Tell us your favorite golf courses in your area? Bulle Rock, Renditions, and there are some great courses in Ocean City.

What about your area is perfect for an event? Just imagine after a great golf outing, the sound of the ocean in the background, the feel of the summer breeze, and THP members sitting shoulder to shoulder, mallets hammering away at bushels of crabs, trading stories of the day's round. Throw in the some Natty Boh's (Maryland's unofficial state beer) and I can only think of great times to come.

How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event?
2-3 hours

What general area? I'm going to say California in general, since I know the Central Valley is never going to happen. I'd say Monterey Peninsula, SF Bay Area or even SoCal would be great.
What time of year? It's California, so if it's close to the ocean, just about any time of year will work. If you go southern Cal, I'd say spring or fall would be good. Monterey and the SF area would work almost any time.
What type of event do you like? And why? I have yet to actually attend my first THP event, so I'm speculating. I could see this being a 2-day invitational type of thing to make it more of a destination event for golfers traveling from farther away. But I'd be fine with a 1-day deal too.
Do you think your area has enough THPers (AC Members) to fill an event? There are good contingents in both northern and southern California that I'm sure would travel across the state. If we did it in a destination area like Monterey, it would be central for those from the state and make a great draw for those who might want to visit from out of the area. I'm pretty sure we could get 40 THPers to make a trip to the Monterey Peninsula to play golf.
Tell us your favorite golf courses in your area? Haven't played much in So Cal or the SF Bay area, but in Monterey, I think a place like Bayonet/Blackhorse would be perfect for something like this. Other possibilities would include Quail Lodge, maybe even Pacific Grove, Rancho Canada, there are more. Obviously, something at Pebble Beach would be epic, and if it happened after Poppy Hills re-opens, that would be a pretty cool spot too.
What about your area is perfect for an event? The Monterey Peninsula is one of the top golf destinations in the world. Period.
How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event? I'm willing to drive anywhere within 3 or 4 hours for a one-day deal and I'd probably go up to 7 or so (that's how far Vegas is for me) for a 2-day event.

What general area?
North Texas
What time of year?
Any time is good in this area. But preferably late spring until late fall. Would love to see an event in this area that has the fairways more green and the wind less severe than this year.
What type of event do you like? And why?
Doesn't really matter. Just love teeing it up with THP.
Do you think your area has enough THPers (AC Members) to fill an event?
I believe this area could fill a THP event a few times a year.
Tell us your favorite golf courses in your area?
For a THP outting, there are multiple great courses to choose from. As others have already said, as a THP group, we played the Winstar Casino golf course and we all thought it would be a fantastic place for a THP event. Locall in the DFW area, Texas Star and Sky Creek come to mind. Grapevine, Bridlewood, Lakes at Castle Hills, Riverchase, the choices are seemimgly endless in this area.
What about your area is perfect for an event?
The THP community is active locally and growing. The weather is playable most of the year and the abundance of golf course choices is amazing.
How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event?
Drive, 5/6 hours.

I think North Jersey would be a solid place. In the summer we have good weather, and are fairly central to a lot of AC Members (from South Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania as well as New England). There are a couple of really nice resort courses right up here (Crystal Springs) with hotels on site and it is just beautiful. I think this area offers some pretty unique golf because of the landscape and where we are geographically.

Now, realistically, I'd like to see more events in the Jersey Shore area as well as Atlanta and/or Charlotte. All have had successful events before.

What General Area?

Western New York! (Buffalo, Batavia, Rochester)

What time of year?

Anytime June or after. Personally tho my favorite time of year to golf is in the fall here. When the leaves are changing it's absolutely gorgeous. Not to mention IMO the courses are in the best condition all year during the fall time. Meaning Sept-Oct.

What type of event do you like? And why?

I love the invitationals. Very very easy way to break the ice with new people and keep meeting more. Plus it keeps the round a bit competitive as well, but its just a great way to meet more THPers. Also should be noted that the invites are the only events I have been able to attend so far.

Do you think your area has enough THPers (AC Members) to fill an event?

This is the only thing that is doubting me. I know of at least 5 or 6 that would be in. I'm sure I could convince more to join and come but really it would up to the fellow THPers in the area (reasonable driving distance) to make the trip.

Tell us your favorite golf courses in your area?

Terry Hills. It's an absolutely gorgeous course located in Batavia. It has 27 holes. It is always very well manicured and probably the best greens around. Plus it would be centrally located with hotels within 5-10 min driving distance and probably 15+ restaurants all with in the course and the hotel. This would be the ideal course to host the event if it were to come to WNY. Only thing the course doesn't have is a full range, however there is a very nice range within 10 mins. Also there is another very nice course with in 5 mins that could host a Friday round get together and LeRoy my home course is only 15 mins away as well.

What about your area is perfect for an event?

Beautiful course, that is located with in 5-10 mins of the hotel and multiple restaurants. Also multiple courses in the area could hold rounds for days around the actual THP event.

How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event?

I've made two trips that were about 6 hours long. As long as I have someone to share the driving with so I can nap I would do 8-10 hours.

If all goes well this year with something's I would drive 18 hours in any direction provided they had great food.

What general area?
Dallas/Forth Worth
What time of year?
Any time is good in this area. Middle of the Summer if you want an Ironman event!
What type of event do you like? And why?
Its all about the fellowship.
Do you think your area has enough THPers (AC Members) to fill an event?
I believe this area could fill a THP event a few times a year.
Tell us your favorite golf courses in your area?
Niteowl said it best: For a THP outting, there are multiple great courses to choose from. As others have already said, as a THP group, we played the Winstar Casino golf course and we all thought it would be a fantastic place for a THP event. Locally in the DFW area, Texas Star and Sky Creek come to mind. Grapevine, Bridlewood, Lakes at Castle Hills, Riverchase, the choices are seemimgly endless in this area.

How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event?
Drive, 2 hours.

What general area? North Carolina. Seems like we have a lot of NC members--something in Raleigh since it's in the middle of the state and not far from 95, which would be convenient for people coming from out of state. Wilmington is a nice area too, just about an hour and a half north of Myrtle.
What time of year? I'm getting in March so the first part of next year is probably out for me.
What type of event do you like? And why? I'm really excited about the Ultimate Club testing. I like how it combines in depth club testing with education and on the course testing with a THP group. I would love to be a member of the Morgan Cup as well. I know there been some discussion about not having it, but I think it's a great event and embodies what THP is all about.
Do you think your area has enough THPers (AC Members) to fill an event? I think North Carolina or Myrtle Beach area would have enough to fill an event.
Tell us your favorite golf courses in your area? If we are talking about Wilimington, then Cape Fear National or Carolina National. Cape Fear National is just outside of Wilmington in Leland and a fun, challenging course. It's a tough course but not frustrating to play. It's always in great shape and is in a beautiful area.
Carolina National is a Freddie Couples designed course that requires you to be smart off the tee--so you can't just bomb it with the driver. It has a couple of holes on the Brunswick River has has some amazing views.
What about your area is perfect for an event? We have a lot of nice golf courses, great restaurants, and places to stay. We have the beach and aren't far from Raleigh.
How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event? About 6 or 7. Anything more than, I would probably fly.

What general area? Knoxville, TN

What time of year? If you miss out on a beautiful East TN Spring or Fall then you simply haven't lived.

What type of event do you like? And why? It would need to be an Invitational type event or gathering. When I think of an "Ultimate" type event I think of a resort destination type place and not East TN.

Do you think your area has enough THPers (AC Members) to fill an event? Should be. With I-75 and I-40 coming together in the heart of Knoxville most of OH, KY, WV, VA, NC, SC, GA, AL, MS are within reasonable drive. We have an airport as well, its smaller so flights are usually more costly but it's there. The folks in FL would have to make a bit longer drive (10 hours from Orlando) so they may be hard to get, which I completely understand as I am not in position to drive to Orlando for an Invitational.

Tell us your favorite golf courses in your area? Off the top of my head I know The Sevierville Golf Club (Wilderness at the Smokies Resort is on site) and River Islands Golf Club (hotels within 15 minute drive) are two that have the facilities and experience to accommodate a group outing. Those are both in Sevierville which is about 20-30 min from downtown Knoxville and the airport. Closer to downtown is a place called Avalon Golf and Country Club. I have played there a couple times, it is challenging and nice. They host alot of tournaments for UT folks like Bruce Pearl, Phil Fulmer and Peyton Manning. Closer to the airport is Egwani Farms Golf Course, its a pretty nice course and also has hosted UT type events so they have the facilities and experience needed.

What about your area is perfect for an event? The courses above all have the facilities and experience to handle an event. As stated, we have an airport close to these courses and two major interstates cross paths in Knoxville. There are also things for the family if people wanted to bring them (more applicable to Sevierville Golf Club and River Islands). You guys should check out the link above to Wilderness at the Smokies resort. The Sevierville area is at the base of the GSM National Park. Oh and did I mention East Tennessee is beautiful?

How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event? For a one day event my max is probably 4-5 hours. For an awesome weekend I would go about 7 or 8 hours (which I can make it to Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head in 6-7 hours). If timing was right and I could get a flight I would go even farther but as stated before, flights from Knoxville are typically more expensive (I looked into flying to Branson for this years Invitational...$600 per person from Knoxville!).

On a side note, I don't know a lot about golf in surrounding cities like Chattanooga/Nashville/Asheville/Cherokee but I hear they have nice courses and facilities and I would support anyone who suggests those areas. I know Memphis has been mentioned but I personally would not make that drive but its not all about me.

What general area? Dallas/Fort Worth. Would like to say Austin but I think being 3 hours south of DFW and a more expensive airport makes it more difficult for non-locals to travel to.
What time of year? Spring/Fall
What type of event do you like? And why? Invitationals are enjoyable, not sure that I would change that. 2 day event would be fun but tough for those travelling in.
Do you think your area has enough THPers (AC Members) to fill an event? Yes, definitely. It is also easy to travel to and fairly central located for out of staters to make it to.
Tell us your favorite golf courses in your area? Tierra Verde, Fossil Creek, Texas Star
What about your area is perfect for an event? Good Tex-Mex, plenty of hotels & restaurants. Ample golf stores and shopping available (including outlet shopping). 2 airports available for flights. Fairly predictable weather. Affordable golf.
How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event? For an invitational event, 8 hours. If the event was a 3/4 day thing (demo day, etc) - up to 20 hours.

Forgot to say how far I would go. Probably 4-5 hours, though the latter would be pushing it. I need it to be close enough for me to go there and back in one day because I can't usually afford to stay over.

Western New York! (Buffalo, Batavia, Rochester)

I second every thing Six says here.

One interesting thing would be to pair it up with the annual LPGA event held here in Rochester. That would make a nice outing for a Friday or Sunday activity.

The other option would be to have it in the Central New York area. Syracuse is a 3-5 hour drive from many of the major metro areas in the northeast and could draw from many places.

What general area? The South. Preferably Florida or South Carolina.

What time of year?
Pretty much anytime of year, but early Fall/Spring is great golf weather here. (Preferably Spring, so I don't miss any college football!)

What type of event do you like? And why?
I'll be kinda bummed if there's not another Outing because I'm just getting active and would like a chance to do the Demo day and all that comes with an Outing weekend, but the Invitational formats sound great. I know whatever you guys plan will be awesome.

Do you think your area has enough THPers (AC Members) to fill an event?
We've got the most THPers in the South, right? If not the most, it's gotta be close to the top.

Tell us your favorite golf courses in your area?
I'd really love to play a course where there's a Tour stop. Never had the chance to do that before and I think it would be awesome. But honestly, find a nice golf course and I'll play it.

What about your area is perfect for an event? Wonderful weather, courses and good 'ol Southern hospitality! Haha

How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event? I'd drive/fly awhile if the course and event was really unique. As long as I have plenty of time to save up for the event, I'd go pretty big with it.

Thanks for hearing us out!

What general area?
Central NY, specifically Verona.

What time of year?
I'd say any of the summer/fall months.

What type of event do you like? And why?
I like all the events, but an invitational would be awesome.

Do you think your area has enough THPers (AC Members) to fill an event?
I would like to think so. Being in central NY, you could get people from NJ, MA, CT, and even some Canadian THPers.

Tell us your favorite golf courses in your area?
Any of the Turning Stone courses would be fantastic. http://www.turningstone.com/golf/

What about your area is perfect for an event?
The Turning Stone golf courses are awesome, plus they hold a PGA TOUR event. The Casino has some good food, gambling, and really nice rooms.

How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event?
I'd go 3-5 hours.

What general area?

It's funny how 90 percent of the people want the event as close to their local area as possible. This is a no brainer because of travel costs etc. I'd say Atlanta, Hilton Head, or Savannah. Savannah, Ga is a real gym with so much history, great food, and sites for non golfing family members to enjoy.

What time of year?

I love the Fall as the air is cool and crisp.

What type of event do you like? And why?
Three day outing type event without the demo day. I kill myself on demo day :beat-up:.

Do you think your area has enough THPers (AC Members) to fill an event?

We have more than enough golfers in the Southeast to fill up an outing.

Tell us your favorite golf courses in your area?

Too many to list :confused2:

What about your area is perfect for an event?

Easy access from those flying in from other regions around the country.

How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event?

I think four hours would work great in our situation.

What general area?

Three suggestions:
New England - defined here as roughly north of NYC and east of Albany NY
Atlantic City NJ / Philadelphia PA
Central PA (i.e. Harrisburg area?) That could draw THP'ers from MD, WV and VA as well as PA and NJ. Possibly eastern OH as well.

What time of year? Anytime when it's not likely to be insanely hot. A New England event in the fall when the leaves are changing would be really great.

What type of event do you like? And why? The THP invitational format is perfect for me. I'm probably not the best person to come and do a bunch of club testing.

Do you think your area has enough THPers (AC Members) to fill an event? Yes, though we didn't quite fill the New England event this time.

Tell us your favorite golf courses in your area? A return to Lyman Orchards would be awesome. There are a ton of golf courses in CT however.

What about your area is perfect for an event? Good transportation options. Lots to do besides golf.

How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event? 4-6 hours, possibly further. I am willing to consider flying as well depending on the event.

What general area?
The South. Specifically - Atlanta or Alabama, or Myrtle Beach or Pinehurst or Hilton Head or Florida

What time of year?
The south is year round golf weather for the most part. Dec-Feb can be cold, June-August can be hot/humid but are playable. Spring & Fall can be outstanding.

What type of event do you like? And why?
I've personally been to an Invitational and to The Outing & Demo weekend. I would prefer an event with at least an option for a pre or post day round for those looking for an extended trip. So events of 2 days or more would be more likely to get me to travel further distances.

Do you think your area has enough THPers (AC Members) to fill an event?
Yes, multiple past events in Atlanta and some of the other areas I mentioned.

Tell us your favorite golf courses in your area?
Atlanta - The Frog, River Forest, Mirror Lake, Hamilton Mill.
Alabama - a THP event on the Robert Trent Jones Trail screams FUN! Sites have many courses, including challenging par 3 courses which would be fantastic for a 2nd round in a day.
Pinehurst - plenty of great courses
Myrtle Beach - True Blue, Caledonia, Pawleys Plantation, Willbrook Plantation, Legends + many more.
Hilton Head - multitude of great courses

What about your area is perfect for an event? Plenty of hotels, great food and fun, good golf weather and many THPers.

How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event? 8 hours would be my limit, would prefer half of that if possible.

Excellent thoughts Barry, I agree with this post whole heartedly. I have played many of the courses mentioned and they are all quality. His reasons mentioned are all spot on and I imagine there will certainly be an event in 2014 in at least one of the areas he mentions.

As far as drive time I am retired so I would drive anywhere that I could do in a full day of driving. I have driven 6 hours +/- to Orlando, Charlotte and Myrtle Beach so I could see myself driving 10 or 11 hours for a multiple day event. I also would consider flying to an event in the Los Angeles area as I have a nephew there and could combine it with a visit.

How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event?

I think four hours would work great in our situation.

I pretty much have the same opinion as Ole Gray. I would just add that the spring time in south is amazing time to play (as long as it doesn't rain). Also I really like the invitational set up, but as to date that is the only thing I have attended.

What general area?
The Pacific Northwest - Oregon, Washington, Idaho, British Columbia, maybe NorCal.
What time of year?
May - early October will have the best chance for good weather; anything outside of that and the PNW becomes very unpredictable. I'd also like it to be before July, as there is no guarantee I will still live in the area after that (job).
What type of event do you like? And why?
Honestly, I think a destination type event will work the best, because while I think there are a solid amount of AC members over this entire geographical spread, most would have to drive a fair distance, or maybe even take a short flight. So something with an overnight component.
Do you think your area has enough THPers (AC Members) to fill an event?
As long as there is the opportunity to stay overnight, yes. Again, we don't quite have the concentrations of members that for instance the Southeast (Georgia, FL) have.
Tell us your favorite golf courses in your area?
There are a number of really good options, but favorites would be:
Oregon - Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (all courses)
Washington - Chambers Bay, Home Course, Gold Mountain, Semiahmoo/Loomis Trail
Idaho - The Coeur d'Alene
What about your area is perfect for an event?
The natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest is incredible. Also the weather in the summer is absolutely perfect - it is hardly ever hot and humid. And year round golf is possible, assuming you don't mind Irish style conditions (wind and rain), cause it doesn't get too cold in the winter. Also fairly good airport options (Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, Spokane, etc...)
How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event?
4 - 7 hours (i.e. no more than a day of driving). Depending on my vacation time situation at work, I may be willing to look into flying to an event.

What general area?

Philly/AC.

What time of year?

May through September.

What type of event do you like? And why?

I'll make a case for an Invitational AND/OR a multi day event. I like Invitationals because they're easier for people to commit to and attend. They're also a great way for those who haven't yet attended an event to get to know everyone and get more comfortable with committing to multi day destination events, all while playing some golf and checking out equipment. And the option of playing rounds with THPers before/after the Invite is easy to figure out as well.

I have not yet attended what I keep referring to as a destination multi day event, but am really looking forward to the TM Ultimate Club Testing. It seems like there will be a good group of guys going, tons of golf and what I anticipate being groundbreaking equipment. I'll be looking to attend more of these.

Do you think your area has enough THPers (AC Members) to fill an event?

Yes. The AC Invite sold out and had a waiting list. There seems to be a strong THP presence in the Mid Atlantic region and the Philly/AC area is a good location to draw guys from a pretty large radius (NE, NY, PA, NJ, DE, MD, VA, etc.).

Tell us your favorite golf courses in your area?

That could be its own thread. But here are some that stick out:

Glen Mills
AC Country Club
Jeffersonville
Lederach
Scotland Run
Wyncote
Bella Vista
Raven's Claw
Broad Run
Inniscrone
Shore Gate

What about your area is perfect for an event?

Aside from its central location, the sheer number of quality public courses in the immediate area provides a lot of options for an Invitational or Multi-day. Both Philly and AC have a ton of lodging choices and lots of activities for non-golfers (wives, etc.), along with casinos, restaurants, etc. to check out once golfing is done for the day.

How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event?

It depends on location. Generally, about 5 hours, but it could be more if I'm extra motivated.

What general area?
The Northeast, CT, RI, MA
What time of year?
Late spring (june) or Early fall (September)
What type of event do you like? And why?
I've only been to an outing, so Ill say the same because it was a blast!
Do you think your area has enough THPers (AC Members) to fill an event?
We just about filled the CT invitational this year and I know there were a few others that were bummed they couldn't make it...so, yes
Tell us your favorite golf courses in your area?
Lyman Orchards was a great facility, Lake of Isles at Foxwoods Casino, Gillette Ridge in Hartford, Newport National in RI, Quidnessett CC in RI, TPC Boston

What about your area is perfect for an event?
Access to everything, the NE is very accessible by rail, plane, or car and has plenty of outside activities as well.
How far are you willing to drive to attend a THP event?
4-5 hrs
