Lake Charles - 2014 THP Invitational #2 Sponsored By Bridgestone Golf

I absolutely love reading the recaps after these events! So much goodness!

Guys, i had a great time . Thanks for comin down to LA. To play some golf. Let me say , if anyone is down in this area, give me a shout and we can play some golf. Enjoyed meeting everyone and hope to make another event soon.

Thanks for showing us the ropes at National. My 76 would have been an 86+ had I been playing without the benefit of your's and Shakey's course knowledge. That's a fantastic track, but #16 can KMA!

Congratz guys, great win and it was great golfing with the 2 of you.

Fact = MWard is the funniest realtor I have ever met

he is a realtor? That explains everything!

Just landed in BOS, waiting on my clubs... So I should have changed because this horrible thing called cold is back and walking off the plane in the clothes you golfed in earlier in the day was not a wise decision.

TBT you are the man, a true friend thank you so much for helping make my first THP event awesome!

I'll have more detailed recaps later.

Great meeting everyone.

My roommate Clay (grizbear) Thank you for your 22 years of service to our country. You are a class individual and I am truly a better person for spending the time I did with you this weekend. Glad you had fun at your first THP event despite what you had to deal with on saturday, but that just shows the class individual you are. If I can ever be of help with anything, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Being that I was grizbear's partner Saturday I sure hope there wasn't something that I did? If so please let me know so the situation can be rectified. -English turn

Good time playin with ya'll. Good round of golf. Hope we can do again soon. Don't worry about 16, it KMA on a regular basis

Me and Skittles trip rolls on in Memphis today. 8:40 tee time at the Links at Galloway. And an afternoon round at Gateway National in St. Louis. 3 states. 3 rounds of golf in 24 hours. That's liven the life. Or excuse me. Not just playing golf, living it. Best. Trip. Ever!

Skittle and I recruited a guy from Illinois to come play with us. Pretty cool. He said he had heard of THP. We will educate him on the course today. Lol. Maybe get a new member.

Where are you playing today??

Where are you playing today??

Links at Galloway. Playing with Matt from Chicago and Jim from Memphis. Blast if a round. Matt will probably sign up. Been talking us up. Told him a ky the Wilson event in Chicago.

Good choice. It is c fun golf course.

How bout posting on the Memphis forum page yall's Memphis experience!

This was my 3rd THP event and they just keep getting better and better!!!

I really did not think I could attend this event in LC, but after a last minute spot opened up, I said I have to make this happen and man am I glad I did.
Played round Friday with Phillip (TBT) Jholl and Griz Bear. We had a great time. All 3 of these guys are total class acts, good golfers and fun to play with.
JHoll remember to tell Johnny "Bridgestone" I said hello I hope to meet up with you all in Memphis sometime for some golf and fun times.
Clay aka Griz Bear, I had a blast riding with you Friday. Thank you for your service to our country!!
Phil we need to hit the Stockyards soon, and remember if anyone asks I am your 29 year old cousin (I think we can shave 17 years off my age if we try lol)

Friday evening it was on to Bdub, It was a blast chatting with old friends and making new friends.

For Saturdays round my partner was the world famous O'Carroll. Pete is a great guy. If you get a chance to share a round with him you will have a blast.
Pete and I struggled a bit on the course, I hit a 2 yard drive on #1 and Pete went in the lumber yard :D but we just laughed it off and carried on.
JB hit a flop shot for the ages on Petes ball on number 3 and Pete missed the Putt, I have a strange feeling Pete might here about that for a while lol.
Pete and I have decided to start a golf club called "Hookers R Us" I think Pete is trying recruit Jeff Reed into the club and membership is open, only requirement is you have to hook at least 3 balls OB in a round haha.
But in all seriousness I had a blast playing with Pete.
we were paired with Griz Bear and English Turn. As I said before you will not meet a better guy than Griz bear. English Turn is a good guy and can hit a golf ball. They played fabulous!!!!

Saturday night was "The Buffet" and it was a blast. I will note a few things I learned at dinner later on.

Sunday I played with my roommate cookie, I can not say enough good things about Cookie, when I get in at the last minute cookie sent me a message that said don't worry about a room I have one for us (Thanks Capt Dru for setting the room up) Cookie is a great roommate and is what THP is all about!!!! To round out our foursome was Eddie (AFWCardinal) I have hung out with Eddie at the last 2 events I attended and you will not find a better guy than Eddie!!!! Barberakb was our 4th. I had not spent much time with him before sundays round, but he is a great guy too. I really enjoyed learning more about him and he is a much better golfer than he lets on :)
Sundays round was a blast, we all played good and busted balls a little and laughed. It was what THP was all about, good times with good friends.

A few notes from the weekend:

Ward is not short like everybody say, I kind of think he is rather tall #ShortPeoplePower
Ward needs gloves when eating crab legs, they hurt his hands :p
#WardFoughtTheCrabLegsAndTheCrabLegsWon
In all seriousness though, Ward is an awesome guy I am very glad I finally got to meet him. His skin is made of armor :)

JB loves desserts and is a bad influence on my sweet tooth.
I think I should have kept my mouth shut about what my favorite type of women is :D
A new hashtag is #Shaneing that is when JB is watching and you hit a drive 2 yards on #1 and follow it up with 300 yard drive on number 18. #ConsistentGolfer

If you buy Capt Dru a double Bloody Mary on number 1 tee box it will back fire on you :)

CJ (Michigan Slice) is a road warrior and lights up any room he walks into. If you ever get a chance to spend anytime with CJ do it, he will make your day better. He is a great wingman :D

Alex (OITW) on Saturday was a combination of Papa Smurf and Carmella Soprano, I kid of course as he looked sharp rocking the Puma blue. This was my first time meeting Alex and he is a great young man, I hope to play some golf in the future with him.

The DFW and Houston crew are the best guys you will ever meet. Just total class in those crews. I hope we can all hook up at Wynstar sometime soon.

there are many more things and people I could mention but I am getting a little long winded!!

In summary here is what it is all about to me. Its about lifelong friendships and golf. After 3 THP events I feel like I have many many many friends for life. I know if I am ever in any part of the country I can get a golf game with buddies at anytime. How can you put a price tag on that.

I cant wait to see all my old friends and new ones again soon.

Thanks for a great weekend guys!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. Thank you Josh, Morgan, (Little Sebastian, inside joke lol) Mike Dean and Bridgestone. You all hit another Homerun!!!!!!!!

A new hashtag is #Shaneing that is when JB is watching and you hit a drive 2 yards on #1 and follow it up with 300 yard drive on number 18. #ConsistentGolfer
I know that guy really well.

Lake Charles - 2014 THP Invitational #2 Sponsored By Bridgestone Golf

Recap time!!

My adventure started early Friday morning with 5 other THP’ers meeting at my house just before 5:30AM. We split into 2 vehicles and easy8 (Chris), barberakb (Aaron), and I were off. Had about a 5 ½ hour drive ahead of us. As usual, we get to chatting about everything THP to our jobs to our tastes in music (did you know that easy8 is a big fan of death metal music?). Unfortunately for him, we couldn’t find any of that on the radio….or much of any decent music for that matter.

After a few quick stops we decide to meet up with JB, wardy, afw, 3bd, capt.dru, and sposey at O’Charley’s for some pre-golf lunch. Had a bite to eat over some laughs before heading over to the course and seeing the parking lot filled up and dominated by THP’ers. Grab some time on the range and then we are off.

Ward provided the highlight by teeing off with the driver, barely catching the bottom of the head and claiming to hit a “stinger”. Only a TW homer like Ward would think to say that at that moment. Hilarity ensued!

I had the pleasure of playing with Shakey, JFlores, and EnglishTurn. We all had our good moments and bad moments with me having more good than bad…..new swing was no bueno! I’ve played with Shakey quite a bit and he was trying a new driver so didn’t have his best round but that was a good sign heading into Saturday as it can only get better, right? JFlores (Jack) nutted a drive off the first tee while showing zero nerves, truly impressive. EnglishTurn was solid all around the course, he can move the ball off the tee, has a great iron game and finally had some putts stop burning edges and dropping later in the round. All in all, it was an enjoyable relaxed round just getting to know the course.

Post golf we drove back to our hotel to get cleaned up before meeting around 30 other THP’ers at BWW. Sposey (Shane) and I were roomies and we just get along fantastically well. We share a ton in common and really enjoy just shooting the breeze about our kids, THP, life in general, and of course TENS units. Headed up to BWW where we took over the outside patio. Always fun meeting new THP’ers and catching up with those you already know. Service was slow but food was good and drinks were really good so I have no complaints. And THEN the effin monsoon blew in and told us it was time to go home but not before CJ makes sure that he gets all his change back after paying with cash…..poor waitress. Easy8 and I had no qualms with that as we were beat down tired and ready to get some sleep before tourney day.

Slept fantastically well and woke up Saturday morning rearing to go. Headed downstairs and had breakfast at the hotel with around a dozen other THP’ers. You could see & feel the excitement in the room as everyone got energized up for the day.

The only real highlight pre-round was Wardy hitting flop shots on the practice green. All were great except one…….and he bladed one nearly taking out a stranger on the range that was none too pleased. He made the run other there as fast as those little limbs can move and profusely apologized for hitting a stinger towards this guy.

Onto the competition round we go. Shakey and I were paired together for this event and both of us were excited about it as we’ve shared numerous rounds together here in the DFW area. We had the pleasure of playing with barberakb (Aaron) and MillerTime (Josh). Aaron and I had previously played together in 2012 I believe and while Josh and I have been at events together, this was our first round. I knew that Josh had some game as a previous Invitational winner and I knew that Aaron had improved since last time we played but the truth is that he has improved a TON. Both Aaron and Josh could move it off the tee and seemed to pick each other up everytime it was needed. They both played well on the front to shoot a nice 80 but they got really impressive on the back 9. Josh was sticking irons tight and both of them made some nice putts to keep things trending in the right direction. We were 1 behind them at the turn with both groups playing well and Tom/I knew that we had to beat them to have a chance. It wasn’t meant to be as we were on the 18th tee box 2 strokes down but knowing that they already had us with a tie breaker – 3 strokes weren’t going to be made up on the 18th. It was a very enjoyable round with tunes flowing and a few drinks consumed!

Format: want to take a moment and comment here. I loved the concept coming into this and was excited to play it in advance of the Morgan Cup. I got aggressive with a target score of 120 for Shakey & I. 40-40 on the front in shamble and then 40 in Pinehurst modified alternate shot on back. Truly believed that if we shot 120 we had a chance at winning. Well, we shot 118 and got beat by numerous shots. I can see where we left a few out there on the course without question. I thought everyone (us included) would have a double or triple on the back even with the choice of 2 tee shots because all it takes is 1 really bad shot. Well, it didn’t happen. There was some PHENOMENAL golf played and capt.dru/jank EARNED that victory. Playing solid wasn’t enough, you had to play really really good to have a chance. JB told me he thought 125 had a chance…..just don’t think we expected so many teams holding it together for the entire 18 like they did. Course wasn’t easy but wasn’t overly difficult – we had some wind and plenty of water to deal with. The format rocked and I enjoyed it so much more than just stroke play – well done JB!

Post golf found some going to lunch and some to the hotel. I opted for the hotel then to head back over to the casino before dinner. Chris (easy8) and I found JB/Wardy at the casino playing some slot machines. I had never played slots so JB tells me to sit down and he throws a $20 bill in there for me. I held my own for a solid hour and the hostess kept the drinks flowing – we were treated very well and free drinks always taste better. MikeG steps up and drops 20 in a machine and not 2 minutes later it’s going crazy. He immediately triples his money and cashes out – Mike is not “the cooler”.

It’s now dinner time but there’s a 2 hour line for the buffet. Not good. Well drunk Cookie is sent to take care of the issue and handles it no problem, not 5 minutes later we are being seated. Dinner is an absolute riot and I can’t even remember everything. Wardy eating crab is a sight to be seen. I think he may have sensitive hands but I can confirm that the crab won that battle…vine proves it. Another early night for Chris and I as again we are just zonked and ready to crash. FWIW, hot apple crisp and vanilla ice cream was to DIE for. Followed by 3 ice cream cones. J

Sunday morning is time to get checked out, packed up, etc. We are headed to the National and I knew it was gonna be great from the drive in. Towering pines lining the fairways and greens were immaculate. We had another 20 or so playing the practice round and for this round I was paired up with barberakb (he continued where he left off on Saturday), Shane, and my good friend Eddie (afwcardinal). I was committed to the new swing on this day and took the good along with the bad. Played much better than Friday which was nice. We had a little skins game going to keep things a bit interesting but the highlight for me was on hole 18 (for 2 reasons). I’m in the FW bunker 185 out to a green that’s elevated with woods right, water front left – I have to pick it dead perfect or it’s wet and I pull it off with the 4h leaving me 40 feet under the hole for an easy 2 putt par…BUT then Eddie drops a 30 footer for birdie to ensure that we all won some skins on the day, we all screamed like little girls – it was a great moment.

Proceeded to pack up quickly for the drive home and it was a fairly quiet one. 5 ½ hours, one stupidly long stop thanks to Subway and back home by 7:30 for me, Chris, and Aaron. They were great dudes to roadtrip it with and would do it again next weekend with these boys.

I’m not gonna do individual callouts cause I will forget numerous things or people….plus I already told everyone what I wanted to in person. Thanks to THP for putting on a kickass event, thoroughly enjoyed every single moment of it and had an absolute blast. Golfing with THP’ers – doesn’t get ANY better than that!

Okay guys, its time to simmer down a bit.
There is no reason to take personal shots.

I'll turn on some 80's on 8 and get my partner in crime simmered down. Lol. Btw, we are the way to St. Louis. Afternoon round is out of the question. I'll be writing my recap of this phenomenal weekend tomorrow. Thanks again.

One of my favorite part of Invitationals / Events are the recaps. Love reading about everyone's experiences. Sounds like it was a great event.

Just landed in BOS, waiting on my clubs... So I should have changed because this horrible thing called cold is back and walking off the plane in the clothes you golfed in earlier in the day was not a wise decision.

Alex, you are a class act dude!

I really enjoyed meeting you and spending time with you this weekend. We got in 2 rounds of golf and 3 1/2 hours at the blackjack table and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Your golf swing is effortless, it won't be long until you will be knocking on the door of becoming a single digit handicap!

I hope I get the chance to hang out with you at another THP event soon.

Full recap to come later

It'll be hard to put in words all the great things about this weekend.

It actually started out on Wed. night with TexasBubba & I hitting the road around 4 pm. We both weren't feeling great, but TB sounded like he had TB. After a quick stop for gas & tacos & a small detour through Cut & Shoot, TX, we made it to bryanmac's at 10 pm. We had an 8am tee time at Gray Plantation on Thur, so I tried to get some needed sleep, but the sandman wouldn't come through. I think I finally got about an hour of sleep before I had to get up.

Thursday @ Gray was awesome. I shot a PB of -1 on the front nine, but came back to reality on the back & ended up with a 77. bmac & TB played well also & we had a great time on a great course. I spent the remainder of the day visiting old friends & eating bmac's amazing cooking. I slept like a log Thur night.

Friday's practice round went a totally different than Thur. I shot a whopping 89 & Cookie didn't have the greatest round either. What we did have though was #SwingLube. Regardless of what we shot, we had fun with Jack (jflores) & Chad (EnglishTurn). Jack made par on #1 with ease & had several great shots throughout the round. Chad shot below his standards on the front, but blistered the back @ 1 over. Friday evening was spent at BWW. It was cool to sit around & hear some of the infamous stories from past events & meet a lot of guys. One thing that stuck with me is how excited Wilson Staff is about the THP event in Oct. The guys that get into that event will be blown away. Thinking back about Friday's practice round, the best thing may have been Mward's "stinger" off the first tee. I'm pretty sure that story has been told, so no need to retell it.

Saturday... the big day was finally on us. Got to the course early, met a lot more new folks including my new friend Kpop. Getting there early also allowed me to snag one of the gray Bridgestone caps that I was coveting. On the range, I got to hit quite a few different drivers on the trackman. The Big Bertha delivered some serious numbers, but the BBA wasn't far behind. I didn't want to hog the monitor, so I didn't get a chance to flip the gravity core to see what it would do. Spent quite a bit of time on the putting green & decided to go with my old putter. Not sure if that worked out for the best since I didn't sink any long putts. Off to the 1st tee & get to see Josh (Miller Time) & Aaron (Barberak) smash their drives. This would be a reoccurring theme all day. On the rare occasion one missed, the other guy bailed them out. Josh & Aaron are both great guys, so that made the competition even better. Josh's approach into 17 was nothing less than spectacular. We're talking PGA good. Then Aaron proceeded to cozy the ball up to 6" for the kick in par. BTW, I wounder how many people actually made par on 17? Cookie & I did everything we could to keep it close, but in the end, we just got beat by a better team. I was shocked when Josh & Aaron didn't win it all.
After the round several of the guys followed me to Darrell's. The drive & the wait was brutal, but I think they enjoyed the lunch. We capped off the night at the casino buffet. I did my best to put snow crab & king crab on the endangered species list. The only other things I ate were a few oysters & shrimp, plus a little dessert.

Sunday I woke up with the dreaded thought that it was the last day of this great trip. But I put that behind me soon & focused on having a good time while it lasted. Gerry, the manager at the National, let me out of the commitment for paying for the no shows, so no one needs to send me any cash. I think all the guys that played the course agree the it was in phenomenal shape. My group of bmac, easy8 & jank beat me up & took my lunch money, but I'm not bitter. LOL. I think I shot an 87 & the other guys were probably in the 70s. O'Carroll won the closest to the hole on the par 3 5th. I wish I would have remembered to have them pin it on the left side of the green. It would have been a much more interesting placement. Playing such a nice course with a great group of guys was the best way I could imagine wrapping this trip up. TB & I headed back to bmac's for a quick shower before hitting the road & made it back home around 8:30 lat night.

Overall it was an amazing experience from start to finish. Special thanks to TB for riding with me, bmac for the unbeatable hospitality & to Cookie for helping keep me loose & into the match on Saturday. Lastly, thanks to JB, GG & THP as a whole for giving us hacks a chance to not just play golf, but to live it.

It'll be hard to put in words all the great things about this weekend.

Recap time!!

I can't even begin to tell you how fun Saturday's round with y'all was. Fun and competitive. I've always had a blast at Invitationals, but the competition between our two groups was so much fun... even if we had to putt almost everything out :alien: Barber will tell you, the adrenaline was pumping on a few of those holes coming down the stretch.

I really hope Barber and I can have a rematch with you guys one day. I've never been to Texas and this needs to change. I'll have a longer recap later, but this one deserved it's own post. I really enjoyed our round with you guys.

P.S. I'm not even one to prefer music during the round, but that playlist was PERFECT!

Recap for me:

Being that it was my first THP event to attend, really did not know how to approach this thing or what to expect. What I did come away with was the following facts, that fellow THPer's love golf and are genuinely some of the nicest guys you will ever meet. I missed out on Saturdays night dinner cause I was busy spending time with the wife and neighbors that had come into town to gamble. I met a couple guys and had several conversation with some not all, but as I hopefully I attend more of these events I become more comfortable and I am sure the conversation will just flow naturally. I think I missed out on some of the comradery with the wife being on this trip but since I billed it as a getaway from the two boys we have, I also had to give her some time.

My Friday Round reminded me of recent topics here on this site:
1. Music on the course: Cookie & Shakey, those guys love their hip hop, which works out cause so do I. They love music and it made for an enjoyable round. Golf and Concert for the price of one = winning in my book.
2. Marking Your Ball: First hole, we all make it to the green, and when it is time to mark our ball we all do it with a tee.
3. Does first hole determine your round: Absolutely not, I parred the first hole, was my only highlight as I carded a 102.

Friday Round
Got to play with Shakey, Cookie, and EnglishTurn. Like I said Shakey and Cookie are an absolute blast to play a round with, these guys know how to have fun. Between keeping the round low key and blasting music, I mean it was just fun. My playing/riding partner was EnglishTurn, it was a blast playing golf with you brother. You can hit em a mile, and your short game is fantastic. We also had some good conversation about golf, life, and more golf. If your ever in Houston, shoot me a PM and we can tee it up. Same goes to any of you guys if your ever in Houston or nearby.

Saturday
My partner for this event was JHoll2277(Jim), straight up total class. Anytime I would screw up my tee shot, he was clutch money, straight bombs down the fairway. Was glad we were able to play some of my tee shots :), unfortunately some putts/and short game didn't show up for us. Overall it was a blast playing with Jim. Our playing partners were bryanmac520 & TexasBubba, great guys with some game. I tell you what, when I get to be a little "older" I want to be able to bomb it like JHoll2277 and BryanMac520, they inspire me to hit the weights.

Vegan702- Thanks for sitting with me at BWW, to touch on what MikeG says, sir you are the epitome of swag. Between wearing the visor and smoking cigars, your a bawse.

OITW, JeffReed, JSkittle, Shakey, Cookie, Vegan702, EnglishTurn, bryanmac520, TexasBubba, JHoll2277 it was a pleasure playing a round with you guys and/or having a conversation with you guys.

Houston Crew - can't say enough about you guys, it really is like a family. Any time we get together, the comradery just shows and we don't skip a beat. Jank congrats on the win, you will do well at PGA National. Hope we can all play more golf in the next few months before the dreadful heat shows up.
