11 years is plenty of time for people to be lazy enough to actualy search for information and then actually believe everything they read on the internet. Can’t you also argue that the media in general these days has completely changed? In the past 11 years we have definitely gotten way more click baity and way more is on social media now.
Hell 11 years ago you still needed a college confirmed email address to get on Facebook (or that feature had just recently been removed), Twitter hadn’t really become much yet, and Instagram didn’t exist. To compare the two climates and make it political is a stretch IMO. The media climate these days due to social media has become a s*** storm.
Not surprisingly, our national representatives are not capable of putting their "our side v your side" nonsense to rest re: stimulus in order to best support Americans during one of the most remarkable times in the Nation's history.
One second, trying to gather myself from the shock. Oh wait.
You mean they won’t put aside differences in order to accomplish something beneficial for all, because then they can’t campaign on “our party saved the economy?”
shocked..
This makes a little more sense to me as to why we're staying home right now.

Deep thoughts from Madonna's bathtub regarding the great equalizer. PSA: If you have a queasy stomach, then recommend skipping this one because the content is unsettling. For those strong enough to muscle through...this is a prime example of social media and its ills.
Do you think she always has flower petals in the bath water? Does she put them in or does someone prepare the bath for her? Topic suggestions for her next bathtub chat.
my buddy sent me a thought today that was also quite intriguing; Why are the people that have the means to be best prepared to weather this storm, seem to be freaking out the most?
Because propaganda. They're falling in line like good little media puppets. And it gets them clicks and likes and followers. Why are the people that have the means to be best prepared to weather this storm, seem to be freaking out the most?
I don't think this is true. I am planning on 3 months. Once I realized what needed to be done 3 months was how long I figured it would take. It is what it is. All I am telling myself is if everyone else is going to sacrifice I am not going to be the jackass out there screwing it up. Trust me I am as rebellious as anyone and I freaking hate being told what to do, but this isn't about me. It's about my mom and dad, the old widows that go to my church, my aunts and uncles, etc. We are all luckier than most as we can still play golf with a few very minor changes to protocol. If anything, this thread shows the idea of how we are dealing with this issue to be very polarizing. So many act like damn the economy as long as we save lives from the virus. Others are the opposite and want to save lives, but understand how doing so at the cost of the world economy might be too high a price.
I don’t see how this social distancing will help anything IF not under a very long sustained timeframe. Every chart and picture I have seen has shown that to “flatten the curve” the time frame is greatly increased for the life of the virus.
Funny thing is those that are pro social distancing have it down that everything will be back to normal in a couple weeks. Wonder if those individuals will say the same if two weeks is turned to 4 and then turned to 8?
My wife goes back to work today, and she’s more worried than I’ve ever seen her, and she gets information from those on the front lines of this across the country, not the news.
That’s why I’m worried. If she is, then I know I should be too.
Yup, the lack of protection as you know is the most worrisome. Also got word today that apparently we are already critically low on ventilators. Crazy.Thinking about you and her this morning. We’re still in the “calm before the storm” phase up here but the physicians in Italy talked about that happening as well. That’s where the concern comes from. Plus many places still don’t have proper protection for the providers and that’s not changing soon enough.
Yeah. This isn’t fun for teachers.Best to you and yours Jman.
They're going to let us go into the school building one last time this morning and then it's going to be fully shut down as mandated by the State. It's so incredibly sad that things ended the way that they did. Please know everyone that we teachers desperately wish that we were with your children today. We appreciate you parents for all that you do.
Maybe someone can asnwer simple question for me.
I know this isn't a possibility because we aren't able to do this (we don't have enough masks), but shouldn't everyone in public in be wearing facemasks?
If they don't protect you from the virus, but they help cut down on asymptomatic "carriers" spreading the virus, in theory if everyone in society was forced to wear face masks in public, would it help (let's just focus on America for now) defeat this sooner rather than later?
I haven’t made any medical statements on H1N1 or Covid-19 (I’m not qualified), but I know I made a ton of money for my company selling pandemic related supplies during H1N1 mainly because the “panic” was different and because of the difference in media coverage in ‘09 there wasn’t the same level of stress on the supply chain (there were shortages that we worked through, but the general public or other businesses weren’t panic buying the same supplies that hospitals needed).
There are some differences in our government’s response and counter measures during H1N1 and Covid-19:
We didn’t declare a National Emergency until October of ‘09 for H1N1 (1K deaths had already occurred in the US, 1st case was in April of ‘09).
We didn’t issue any travel bans to or from anywhere for H1N1 (Maybe less panic in ‘09 bc travel wasn’t impacted leaving tourism & hospitality industries undamaged).
We didn’t have quarantine orders all over
the country in ‘09, we just went about what we were doing.
We didn’t take our economy to the brink of a Depression in ‘09, there wasn’t massive losses in the Stock Market due to panic selling and counter measures that impacted unemployment & GDP in ‘09. We still went to work every day in ‘09.
No one in the Media was claiming that the White House wasn’t doing enough or too much (remember when the travel ban from China was “racist”). No one was chastising every decision the White House made in ‘09 (although over 12K Americans died from H1N1).
Maybe it’s not for political reasons, but the coverage is different, more alarmist & more Fear Porn than we have ever seen. Almost as if the Media wants a Depression, I mean it was a month ago (feels like it’s been a year), that the Media spearheaded an Impeachment of the POTUS.
Like I said, I’m not a medical expert, but I know data. With the Fed predicting a 30% Unemployment Rate & 50% drop in GDP, the real catastrophe of this event becomes clear. The last time there was a Depression in this country, 7 million Americans died from factors of the fall out (mass suicides, civil unrest, etc.). Political or not (I believe it is political, you think it’s a stretch), the media is complicit in what ever happens.
