Iphone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro

Picked up the 11 and took 30 minute tutorial with the camera and apps with a specialist. Definitely worth it. Have a case and screen protector on as well.

Happy so far.

I broke my THP Pop socket, need to pick up another one.

We have a fun app thread with some good photo stuff and I will be diving in more later today with some other apps that have been recently updated and are solid.

I know, you keep saying apps and it makes me hungry...

It's super long at 40 minutes, but he covers every aspect of the good and the bad.
I'm about 10 mins in and seeing some good stuff already. Taking better photos is something I really need to put some effort into since I have the tools available to make some pretty awesome stuff with them

Yes you do. He covers every single aspect and it's really good.

Still have my iPhone 6S. Why? It has a 3.5mm headphone jack for my expensive (>$400.00), high fidelity headphones for when I'm away from home and/or traveling. Am I the only user that hates the Lightning connector? I've had so much trouble with it not connecting to charge my phone and I'm constantly having to clean out the female portion of the connector on my phone or it won't charge when plugged in. What an awful design. Never had this problem with the old connector on my 4S. Now, with the complete abandonment of the headphone jack, one would have to use the Lightning to 3.5mm jack convertor dongle. God awful! Honestly, I'm going to have to eventually replace the 6S but really, really am having an attitude problem about what Apple has done.

So, the usefulness of an iPhone for me is now going to be reduced to just email and a phone... and whatever apps are useful to me. I will have to invest in a high quality, Hi-Res DAC audio player, like an Astell & Kern unit. I already have a Hi-Res music library for my main audio system on a server of over 40,000 songs, that I can port over to the Astell & Kern.

By the way, the camera thing... I have 3 really, really good Nikon DSLR's and a huge investment in Nikon glass. The iPhone camera system is an afterthought for me, it's only real value for me is convenience. If I want to take great photos, I use my DSLR's and great glass.

Please correct my error(s) in how I perceive this whole iPhone situation. They are expensive and have reduced usefulness for me now.

I too have multiple cameras and glass, but the best camera to use is the one you have with you. I rarely want to drag cameras out with me wherever I go. So having the ability to shoot solid photos, raw and keep my devices small is a huge help to only shooting images when I decide to take the bigger cameras out.

having hauled cameras and glass around....I missed everything I wanted to experience dealing with the big camera. As @JB said the best camera to use is the one you have with you. I don’t shoot photos for a gallery. I shoot photos for my family and for myself. Why go through the hassle of dealing with a DSLR if I don’t have to.

As for the headphones thing, no phone is ever going to be able to replace a true hi-fi system. And that is more than fine for about 99% of the population The headphone jack thing is annoying but Apple isn’t the only company moving away from that port.

the lightning port is objectively better than the old 30pin connector. I’ve never had an issue with one and I’ve never had to clean one out, but it’s easier and less hassle to clean than the 30 pin I’m sure. Ideally Apple would move to USBC for them, but I’m not sure they will, as lightning works well enough and Apple can charge a premium for the accessories.

If you don’t want to upgrade, don’t. If your phone works for what you need that’s great!

Yep! I will admit, the camera in a phone is convenient. But for example... How do you get Bokeh with the iPhone 11 camera system? Do they have it as a software option, where it is synthesized? I use the Nikkor 85mm f/1.4G prime on my full frame and get beautiful Bokeh. This is perfect for portraits. Don't know how you replicate that with a phone camera.

I'm constantly battling the Lightning connector on my 6S for indicating it's charging initially on the screen flash, only to find my phone later, uncharged because of a weak connection due to lint build up in the connector. The 30 pin connector was completely trouble free for me.

Quite easily actually. It can be obtained through different focal points, just as a full featured camera can. And if that doesn't work for someone, the ability to add in post is rather simple. Hell the wide angle is f1.8 so its not full focus of a screen like older phones were anyway. In portrait mode beginners can even toggle the f-stops to see what happens as it changes to the background and foreground.

The problem is, I will eventually have to upgrade but with what they are doing, price increases and less utility for me, is an issue and it makes it less attractive.

See my post to JB on how for example, do you get controlled Bokeh with the phone camera system? I understand they are getting better resolution and all that stuff but as a photographer, Bokeh is key to really good portraiture.

Moving over to an Astell & Kern unit, has been on my radar for about 2 years.... but for convenience taking just my 6S on the road has been ok. I'm a diehard audiophile and have been for a long time. So, the difference is not lost on me. Now I will have to bring another device along and charger, because the phone has diminished this design utility aspect. The good news is, the A&K will blow away anything the iPhone can do in audio quality... so that is a firm positive.

The 30 pin was a secure connection... it locked. The Lightning wiggles and does not lock in. It's been a thorn in my side ever since I got my 6S.

Yes, but I am super confused. I didn't mention resolution. F Stops having little to do with resolution and much to do with creation of bokeh, through depth of field, which is what I said above.

so it is synthesized, from how you describe it. I'd have to see some shots done with it, to evaluate the results. With the 85mm f/1.4G, it is a function of f/stop and focus. Easy to control and when done correctly, the subject is sharp and the background melts away.

Both of these things can be manually controlled on an iPhone.
I dont think anybody is comparing it to a changeable lens interface. We have a studio with lighting in our Lab. But it can never be overstated that the best camera for shots is the one you have with you, and perhaps you like to lug around a camera bag, multiple lenses, lighting, batteries and cards, but I sure dont. I dont think most people do. haha

Most importantly, more people are taking pictures than ever before and if Apple is the reason for it, that is great.

hello world. i bought an 11 yesterday, wife got the 11 pro. so far so good.

This is my take. It's really fantastic to have a "good enough" camera along with you for a lot of things. I end up taking more photographs and playing more with editing/etc. than I was doing with my "real" camera. Can I get the same bokeh on a portrait shot I can get on an SLR? No, the physics won't allow it. But there are other shots that you can get with the iPhone camera and the processing it has that you can't with a big camera, because it can't take pictures as fast.

I agree, phone cameras are convenient and I appreciate that... the iPhone 11 Pro camera looks like it is getting there.

Re: Bokeh
Exactly.

Your last statement puzzles me. In photo mode, my D500 body for example, shoots 10 frames per second in full auto at 20.9 mp each. That's fairly quick.

If there was ever a damn reason to give us the button back it’s trying to use this phone with a mask on.

gawd this is awful

I was bitching about that the other day. Put touch ID under the glass and things are all good again.

You have to wait 16 more versions for that and 5G evidently

This is awful

haha, yeah, wow on that one.

I've got pairs of sunglasses that I have to remove in order to get it to work. Also incredibly annoying.

I'm still OK for 5G because I don't think its ready yet. While I've grown to like Face ID in general, I'd love them to have the option of the FP scanner under the glass. It's not like its new tech now, we see it on pretty much every flagship android phone.

I get I, but for those that don’t replace phones every year due to their ridiculously high costs now, waiting another cycle on 5G when it’s available everywhere else seems so forced to me

so assuming with everything thats going on in the world today will september release date of the iphone 12 get moved? are there any new features that have been leaked? im ready for a new phone and was going to get the 11 when it released but thought there was really nothing new to get me to move off my 7plus..
sigh

May we see a selfie with the mask?
