So I wrote a new song the other night on the acoustic and I really liked it, so I started recording it the next day. 20 hours over two days later and the song has come alive in a way I didn't quite expect it to.

Of course, now its stuck in my head and I can't get it out. I know that because it is my song, I'll have a stronger attachment to it that others would, but its in there so deep that I'm grinding my teeth and other nervous twitches. I'm just dying to get home and work on it more.

I get the same feeling when I really wanna golf badly.

Point of the story is that its crazy how the things I am passionate about can make me feel sooo good, but so bad at the same time.

Anybody else get this way?

Happens to me from time to time. I can get an idea in my head that I just know will be good....and then when I record it, it just does not sound as I thougth it would. Sometimes I let the song rest for some time, and try later.and sometimes I just give up

Yeah, I'm with ya. I stopped chasing the songs that pop into my head. I can't ever get them to translate.

Its so liberating to be well enough equipped to complete a recording at home now. It really stoked the fire inside me and made writing fun again.

Yeah, I agree. I have a decent setup at home as well so I can write/record whenever I want

5, 6, or 8. Which should we choose.

I would go 6 strings everyday. 8 is to many for me. Tried 7 strings for a while, but could not get the feeling for it, so I have a 6 string tuned down if I need the really low tunes...Nice instruments btw!

I'll take 6 too, I've tried 7 and 8 but my hands and fingers are too short to really be able to use the fingerboards.

When jammin with friends the good old 6 string will always be home base. But as can often happen someone has to play the bass. Since I had studied Classical Piano as I child for over 10 years I always ended up pick up the low end and keeping the good times rolling.

The 8 string has been a bridge between the regular guitar and the bass. When practicing I can often play the lead or bass parts with out having to switch instruments. I have also found that by practicing my scales on the 8 string my speed and knowledge of the scales improve on the bass and the 6 string.

But it's all good. Music is a fun hobby and I mainly enjoy just playing around with the Blues.

Cheers

I play in a punk/thrashy band. I also happen to look like I play in a band like that (ie. long hair, beard, tattoos, piercings, etc.) so whenever people find out that I play golf, they always give me a sideways look almost disappointed. Used to bother me a bit, but now it's more of an enjoyment to see the confused head tilt. It's even better on the course when getting paired with Mr. Businessman and seeing him get frustrated that I can make putts. In the words of Charlie Murphy, "don't judge a book by its cover, this cat can ball."

What kind of tuner do you guys use? I lost mine and never really trusted it. I should learn how to do it by ear.

Late to the party sorry. I always use my t electronics polytune. I am constantly plying live gigs so I have to have a stage tuner, this one is unique because it allows me to test my tuning by strumming all 6 strings at once and it tells me which one is flat or sharp. Also the tuning is really accurate, I always use it to adjust my intonation when needed

Musicians???

It has two modes, the 6 string tuning which is engaged when all 6 strings are strummed and single tuning when one string is strummed. They have a mini model as well if you have any board room issues. Some guys I have played with run their tuner through their volume pedal so it is on at all times it's a really great set up. They run at about $99 which is quite cheap for a good reliable stage tuner, I've had mine for over 4 years.

Quick update on that 1933 song my great-grandfather wrote - I was able to FINALLY get the piano track recorded by someone! So now it's off to my friend in Ireland for the vocal recording. I can't wait to get her track back so I can do up a rough mix and hear this song.

That's awesome dude, I hope you post it, it would be cool to hear.

I absolutely will. The vocalist sent me a sample just to make sure she was singing/recording in a way that would work for me, and it was amazing. I cannot wait for this to be done. I'm contemplating scoring some strings on the song just to add a bit more and make it feel like a true 1930's orchestra/vocalist piece, but I may just leave it be and let it stand on it's own.

I recently recorded drums for a good friend of mine who's a folk singer, and her album dropped last night. There's a lot of full band songs on the album, her main instrument is ukelele & guitar but there's a lot of upright bass, violin, and some more uptempo tunes. I like the way it came out overall, even if I'm not a huge fan of how my drums ended up getting mixed. But on the whole, it's a great sounding album if you're into slightly eclectic folk music with pop vocal hooks.

She does have an interesting voice. I agree with you on the mix. Your drums got mixed down too much and a little to much effect on them.
I think Angel Cake was my favorite song on the list and the best mix overall. Great job buddy !

Thanks Bill, I appreciate the kind words! I sent the drums as a mixed stereo file, already EQ'd and mixed to match the sound she wanted for her songs. I wish I had the time to set up one of my acoustic kits, but had to go with the v-drums. Sounds like some more EQ was done, along with some unnecessary compression because you can hear how weird the reverb tail on the snare is. Oh well, c'est la vie. I controlled all I could, sometimes this happens.

Song update- got the vocals back from my friend in Ireland. It's freaking GORGEOUS. She sang it in two styles, one a more classical way with vibrato and trills, the other other more straight. I actually used both tracks, the classical as the primary then I brought in the other track to thicken up the vocals on some lines. It's amazing. To sit and listen to a song my great-grandfather wrote almost 90 years ago is just... wow.

I'll post it publicly once my grandmother gets to hear it. Probably won't be for another month or so until we get out to western MA to see her (she's headed into the hospital for a week or so unfortunately for some observation) but once I get to play it for her, you'll all get to hear it too.

Musician here... been playing guitar for 25 years now. Spent about 5 years playing professionally (notice I didn't say "making a living," haha) in bands and doing session and sideman work. I still fire it up and make noise from time to time.

Drummer here. Been playing in blues, jazz, and rock bands since the early 70s except for small 10 year break in 80s. I have homes in Phoenix and Bullhead City, AZ and play in bars and casinos in both a couple of times a month. Dave

Guitarist here. Was in a local band for awhile, but my shift work made it too hard to do regular gigs.

When I was 16 a friend on mines Dad gave him a Black Sabbath album, a greatest hits record called "We sold our sould for Rock and Roll) There is a track on there called "Warning". When I heard Tony Iommi play the extended solo in that song I knew right then that I HAD to learn to play the guitar. I went right out and bought a guitar and taught myself to play by listening to Black Sabbath and ZZ Top records.

When I retire, I plan to start a Black Sabbath tribute band.
