Two weeks ago, Mizuno unveiled the JPX 921 line of irons and if you missed our preview, check it out here. Over the last two weeks, we have been busy in the THP Tech Studio putting each of the four sets to the test.
The lineup consists of the Hot Metal, Hot Metal Pro, Forged and Tour. We wanted to not only tell you about the results, but show you the testing and talk you through some swings.
In the video below, we take each set for a test drive and talk a little bit about the tech, but go a step further and compare all four to each other in the wrap up with all of the data.
After watching the swings and hearing about the clubs, which set do you think fits best for your game?
The Details
In Stores: 9/17/2020
Cost: $1000-$1400 depending on set
That’s awesome. Have a desire to try Mizuno one day, and this JPX 921 line is making it difficult to keep pushing it out.
Great way to become more familiar with Mizuno and hit the ground running at the Experience. Really looking forward to more details and sign ups for this one!
Vosh talked about this with @Canadan on the Mizuno live stream a bit, the Tours are….well….Tours, and the profile is super similar, which they should be because they’re awesome. But the rest of the line has seen a heavy evolution, and theyre all fun to hit, but I really do believe the Forged are super special.
Are you filming the purge? I can only imagine what the club library looks like at your place
I need to watch it, work got in the way so missed most the showcase and comps
Not that many irons, I give a lot away to HS kids who can’t afford decent sets. These are leading me to purge the Miura’s though, and that’s a huge compliment from me.
It’s a super fun one. The way Vosh breaks it down with Dan is pretty fantastic.
PERFECT time to start doing club work Mike!
It’s tiiiiiiiiime!
Man. Those are two ? options to have though!
Wait, I thought you were going one length.
Those Miuras seemed like the perfect set feel wise for you, and I really enjoy the looks. The Mizunos must be something, to cause you to purge those.
Awesome!
I was going to try OL, which I did this week and the long irons just weren’t working for me mentally, which is funny because the OL 56 degree was an absolute riot.
So, it comes back to VL, and that whole Mizuno event thing in 2021
The 921 Forged are just a fun head to hit
Hello there
That setup sounds fantastic. I hit the forged 7i again the other day and afterwards stood staring at a stock PW-4i set wondering why I shouldn’t just buy them. The feel is solid, and they crush the ball. I also enjoyed seeing a full set. I like how they setup and look top to bottom. And io is new and exciting. I can’t wait for your ongoing feedback. ?
Wuuuutttttt? Boom!

Noticed a problem though. The shafts that were ordered were the Recoil 460 ESX regular flex (which is the F3 according to the
UST website), but when I got these home and unboxed them, the shafts are F2 (which is the lighter A flex per the website).
I’ve emailed the fitter to confirm whether I’m missing something here, or whether Mizuno screwed something up when they were building them. We will see what happens.
UPDATE: Emailed the fitter and he said that Mizuno screwed up and it should be F3. So, going to run them back up there tomorrow and get it resolved one way or the other.

How long to get them from the order date?
Thanks
I’m just wondering how long these last in the bag Thinking all year or till summer?
It was 7 weeks exactly from initial order (12/7) until delivery (1/25). Though I should note that when I ordered the heads were on backorder until 1/7. So, once 1/7 hit, they arrived in just over a couple of weeks.
I’m expected that it will be a 1-2 week turnaround, at most, to get the right clubs since it was Mizuno’s mistake. If it’s longer than that, it will be extremely disappointing, to put it nicely.
Since there’s that little Mizuno event announcement that happened at the THP Showcase broadcast, it only makes sense for me to play them leading up to the event….
And they gave me a $50 gift card for the hassle.
So, while certainly annoying and I wish they’d done it right the first time, I guess an extra $50 to wait a few more weeks isn’t all that bad, especially considering it’s winter right now.
Stinks it happened, but you are handling it a lot better than a lot of folks would have.
Curious combo – I would have gone one or the other but not a blend.
My fitter suggested it in my fitting. I wonder what their policy is for returns as this was a custom order from the factory? I might give them a call.
Yeah, definitely not pleased and you would think that is something that Mizuno would check before sending it out the door. But at the end of the day, mistakes happen, and not much I can do about it other than have them fix it as quickly as possible.
It’s a bit surprising I agree. When I ordered mine, it took longer than I was previously told because due higher than anticipated number of orders.
I know I was stunned at the speeds I was seeing at the THP Showcase, stunned.
the ball speed sim seeing from my HMP 5-7 irons is pretty impressive. Took a little gap adjusting but happy to have the problem. Surprisingly the Forged 8i gaps well into the HMP 7
I have a set of 921 HMP on order just waiting and it’s a long wait haha! My mind has now wandered and love the idea of HMP in 4-7 with the 8-PW in forged as you have. Having not tried or able to try the 8-PW forged due to testers being 6 and 7is (which are all chromoly not the 1025e carbon) I swung both – loved the forged 7i too – good numbers on the trackman. Which led me to this…
Just wondering about specific feels, thoughts, distance gapping and anything else you can let me know about the 921 8-PW forged would be much appreciated. Thank you!!!

It goes without saying that the 921 Forged feel amazing. I have never played a Mizuno iron and immediately once I hit them I realized this is what many were talking about all along.
Feel being subjective, and let’s say they feel great, that brings up to performance. Distance wise I am not seeing a gap from my HMP 7i to the Forged 8i. There is a 6* gap there, but on course results does not having me wishing I bent the 7i weaker or the 8i stronger. Compared to my previous set (Apex CF-19 Combo) the lofts are pretty similar.
I will say I am not sure if it is the shaft change (went back to Recoil 95’s) but I am seeing a touch more distance out of the Forged 8-PW. I know we all deliver the club differently at impact, but FOR ME I am not seeing anything that would tell me I have gapping issues.
Not Mike, but as I love golf talk I wanted to chime in something I saw in the THP Club Lab last week, hitting 8i to 8i at standard lofts in the Forged and HMP I saw a 5 yard carry difference. Not a ton, but, that would be 1/2 a club for most and worth mentioning imo.
Thanks for getting back. All things considered. You are very right on individual swings/delivery at impact and lofting preferences. The only real feedback i have thus far is the HMP 6i bent one degree weak at the fitting that gave me numbers on the trackman and consistency I’ve never seen or felt in my life and then having hit the stock forged 7i maybe 8 balls worth at the local shop by my house which produced nice numbers on the trackman as well – this making them top choices going into the fitting. Also having never owned Mizzy irons the feeling when hit well really is something else!!!! and mishits not harsh and not punishing at all with both irons.
part of me just wants to order the forged 8-PW right now and be done with it and the other part says save your dough and at least play the HMPs first. Club champ gives a 90 day grace period so I think I will just play the HMP and see what’s what then make the decision within the 90 day period.
J Man – thanks for chiming in. Love some chat as well. Yes that is what I am concerned about too especially in the 8-PW (want to be as accurate yardage wise as I can) also gapping into Vokey SM8 50* (my 50,54,58 yardages are spot on) and just thinking the HMP might be a bit hot in the lower irons. Less roll out preferred. Need to just get my HMP’s and play them for a real assessment. My game has improved a lot over the last year and like the idea of using the forged 8-PW as tools to help me become a better iron striker. Can’t wait to start swinging em see what’s what and then I can make a more accurate decision.
I have both the HMP and the Forged, and can confirm that if think "5 yards more" you will be happy with your split.
The HMP lauch plenty high, so roll out is an absolute non issue. At least for me.
This is a biggie imo, the HMP short irons are really fun, and I don’t think they should be slept on. Split sets are fun, but these are well engineered top to bottom.
Yes def. had great launch with HMP in 6 and 7i so that being said could just be dialing in the lofts through the set for optimal performance. Thanks for the feedback!!!
Having both sets, are the shafts the same? Do you prefer one or the other ? Are you aiming at making the epic mixed bag? what’s your overall opinion of the hmp 8-pw vs. forged 8-pw besides the 5 yard carry difference.
