Two weeks ago, Mizuno unveiled the JPX 921 line of irons and if you missed our preview, check it out here. Over the last two weeks, we have been busy in the THP Tech Studio putting each of the four sets to the test.
The lineup consists of the Hot Metal, Hot Metal Pro, Forged and Tour. We wanted to not only tell you about the results, but show you the testing and talk you through some swings.
In the video below, we take each set for a test drive and talk a little bit about the tech, but go a step further and compare all four to each other in the wrap up with all of the data.
After watching the swings and hearing about the clubs, which set do you think fits best for your game?
The Details
In Stores: 9/17/2020
Cost: $1000-$1400 depending on set
Quick hits though.
The profile at address of the forged is perfect. It’s the first more forgiving (compared to my usual pure players irons) iron that I’ve ever sat down that gets it right for my eye. A lot of that is that Mizuno rolls the topline, love me some non square radius top lines.
Feel is, well, Mizuno mixed with more power in the irons with chromolly especially. I’m shocked at my carry numbers with them for the profile, it’s a half club longer than I anticipated.
It’s been a long time since I’ve played JPX, I had a bad taste in my mouth from the EZ lines I reviewed for THP when I first started writing, I knew they corrected course on that. But this is first time I’ve physically experienced it.
Deeper thoughts soon, but the Forged are a special iron, and I’m not saying that because I’m in a Mizuno event, if they weren’t something truly impressive, they wouldn’t be in my bag.
They’re bigger than the 7’s in terms of sole, and a lot more forgiving, and longer. Both fantastic, but there’s more give and power packed in these imo.
I think it was kind of a blessing is disguise, the 921’s look great and should be a fun set to game for me. I have never tried to keep 2 sets at the same time so I’m not sure how that’s going to go for me
That’s so damn cool.
Hey, so I have JPX-EZ’s and I am on year 6 or so of them. Not the orange and black model but the more recent one. What did you not like about them besides the chunkiness? I am looking to upgrade this year and I am strongly looking at the 921-HMP or HM. I am about a 15 cap. Let me know your thoughts. You can PM if you like. Heading down to FL Thursday so skis go away for a week and out come the clubs
Thanks
It was my experience that their launch windows were just a bit wonky. I reviewed both sets, and the orange version was definitely the bigger perpetrator of that for me but both were just…off. Feel was good, but they seemed like they just didn’t fit in the Mizuno lineups, which they kind of agreed with as they altered the JPX pathway moving forward from those. If they work, then love them and use them, but the Hot Metals are imo what those SHOULD have been. The forged are maybe the best all around iron they’ve put out though, they’re special.
The forged sound great but want to ensure forgiveness. Every year has gotten better as I work my way back into the game. If forged is similar to HMP on forgiveness scale then maybe. They are nice looking
HMP will be slightly more forgiving than the Forged if that’s your biggest concern, but they still feel fantastic and flat out perform.
( if I can’t have my order in hand yet at least I can talk about it, right?)
There is a massive amount of forgiveness in the Forged. I play 5 – PW, both toe and heel misses end up way better than they should. Try the whole range and you may be surprised.
(And can report back more once they hopefully show in three weeks…. living vicariously through the thread at the moment to not bounce off the walls in anticipation)

ZX7 vs 921 Tour vs Apex pro vs P770
1. 921T
2. ZX7
T3. Apex Pro/P770 because I’m not fan of hollow irons.
Really want to order up a 921 Forged/Tour combo but the 6+ week wait makes it tough to spend the dough.
What about a a full set of forged?
Taking them out today, abs pretty excited to have them back on the course.
Sounds like a fun pairing. Can’t wait for pictures and the recap!
I LOVE the sound of the 110’s with he forged….would love to know how they worked out for you. The 921 Forged are the ones that have my highest ponder right now
I’m a tiny bit jealous of the details here… 921 Forged, Recoil 110 F5, real golf on a real golf course, yeah pretty much all of it. Even the turned ferrules. Have fun!
HM Pros arrive.
They were a lot of fun to have back out yesterday, but I’ve got a lot of learning to do on distances as they’re just so damn long!
And this is a bad thing, why?
Didn’t say it was bad, but it’s a relearning phase for me, and unexpected given the profile of the irons. For me, distance isn’t the focus most times with irons, but, it can be a nice bonus
Calibrating… check, check one.
I’m having this problem at the bottom end of my bag. My PW is 20 – 30 yards longer than my 50* wedge. I’ve found I am a club to a club and a half longer than my previous irons, which is great as you go up the bag but the bottom end is all thrown out now.
I guess you can strengthen and lengthen your Gap Wedge if that is doable. Or better, buy a new Gapper
What’s your club setup like at the bottom of the bag?
Can you use a PW from a previous set as a step into your lower clubs?
I wish my JPX921 Forged irons would show up, so that I could have your problem. ; )
50, 54, 58. I do only carry 13 clubs so there is a free slot.
Hang in there, I was initially quoted around 20 days, I think it was closer to six weeks if not longer before they arrived.
Six weeks…I’m going to need more wine.

Nice! I really like what they did with the short iron look and shaping on the 921F. I would definitely try the GW out if I had that set.
The move the the Recoil 110 F5’s was a smart one for me in terms of durability (of me) as well as general familiarity and comfort.
I do think I’m going to toy with the lofts a little this weekend, maybe take them 1 weak, not for distance but for fit in terms of peak height. We shall see.
The feel at impact though is downright addicting.
Beyond that, finding (slowly albeit) my ball striking again has made them even more enjoyable as well. The SOUND of the Forged when compressed is just….well it gives that tingly sensation all over
Still considering tweaking the lofts a little, but that’s purely for personal fit and will be done after some GC2 on the course time in coming weeks.
Take this, and turn it up about 5 notches now.
I’ve almost fixed my shallow to steep problem and as I break that sh***y winter habit my flight was come WAY up and that SOUND is back, the one where you compress it and people turn and notice. Had one playing through yesterday on a par 5 with a 6i from 201 and dropped it 5 feet short of the flag, it actually drew an “oh ****” from the gentlemen Letting me through.
Distances are LONG for me, I didnt expect to play a 175 yard 8i in this set but here we are
Want to get monitor time this weekend to see how I want to bend them, still thinking weak for a little easier peak and a little more spin.
Crazy? No. If you know you like them, get fit for them and enjoy the heck out of it.
On the downside, I can’t see myself being willing to wait 8+ weeks for the product to get to me.
I am digging this update. Very awesome.
