Two weeks ago, Mizuno unveiled the JPX 921 line of irons and if you missed our preview, check it out here. Over the last two weeks, we have been busy in the THP Tech Studio putting each of the four sets to the test.
The lineup consists of the Hot Metal, Hot Metal Pro, Forged and Tour. We wanted to not only tell you about the results, but show you the testing and talk you through some swings.
In the video below, we take each set for a test drive and talk a little bit about the tech, but go a step further and compare all four to each other in the wrap up with all of the data.
After watching the swings and hearing about the clubs, which set do you think fits best for your game?
The Details
In Stores: 9/17/2020
Cost: $1000-$1400 depending on set
I still believe that the Hot Metal Pros and Forged irons are some of the most underrated of the year.

I have up to 5 rounds (weather and time dependent) and 1 smart bay session planned in the next 7 days so we shall see how the learning curve progresses with mine. I have high hopes for this honeymoon.
I really want to upgrade from the 919 HM to the 921F personally but honestly don’t think my game is good enough for it. Really welcome much forgiveness as I can get being a weekend hacker.

Go hit some 921F if you can. I am astonished at the forgiveness of them and the stability with the right shafts. My learning with them is do not fear the club. Trust your swing.

what a great line, regardless of the club
My irons finally came in.
Hitting the 4 iron and 5 iron Forged are just so sick. They feel incredible.

They sure do. Catching them pure is such a nice feeling!
You ever get the feeling like you’ve got unfinished business with an iron? That’s how I am feeling with the 921 Forged right now. I fell head over heels on them near their release, and just never really gave them a full look after navigating away toward some more player-esque irons.
Who out there is having a blast with their forged and can tell me a bit more about them?

I’ve played 4 rounds in the last week with mine and they have performed every bit to my expectations. When struck well they are beautiful. When struck poorly, my right ring finger vibrates like a tuning fork and goes numb in the cold.
I am still learning the distances with them and have taken to grabbing a longer club than I think I need and just living with that.
While the 4-8 irons I find actually pretty easy to clatter out of any lie, I struggle with the 9-GW for some reason and struggle to get any distance out of them – most likely because I am scooping more than I should be.
That being said, I do not look at the 4/5 iron and fear them at all, even with my swing flaws where I will thin the ball and end up with that numb ring finger. It’s the shorter clubs where I get apprehensive and do stupid things.
The way mine are set, I get a nice high ball flight with them – which killed me in the wind over the last week, but given that those were anomalous, the launches do help stick greens and put a smile on my face.

No – I have the same issue with 9-PW in HMB’s and when I had the 919F. I might strengthen the loft of those slightly in the HMB. The 1025 Steel just doesn’t have the Chromoly punch.

Very interesting. I need to get them back on the range and try some different things. I have been playing these more forward in my stance to try and promote more of a compressed impact than a scoop which helps a little, but I still can’t get the distance I want.
Alright THP, it finally happened. I brought the JPX 921 Forged back to the Ohio THP Field Office for some long term testing.
This has been an iron that has rattled around in my brain ever since I put the first swings on video. It’s a performance monster packed into a tight head design, and worth giving a fair amount of time on the course to.
So the question is, do I go standard boring and install the long term Tour V gamer shafts? Do I drop the recoil protos in? Do I take on that heavier shaft experiment I have been talking about? What say you?
I say baseline against your gamer shafts and then throw in the fun ones to see what the tangible differences are.
Even with my C-Taper lites, I feel like these clubs are quite heavy – especially when you get down to gap wedge.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. The Forged are firmly planted in my bag and for the first time in years I’m not even interested in hitting another iron.
I’m another vote for a comparison with your gamer setup.

Go heavy if it’s been on your mind. I have the KBS Tour in my HMPs and love it. I think that would a be fun combo or even $ Tapers.

So, a shade heavier, a touch more active in the tip, I like where your head is, Spicoli.
If you need someone to test the protos side by side with you…. I may know a guy

I would put a shaft you are comfortable with in so we can get an accurate reflection on how the clubhead is for you. I am interested to see how they are. This club is on my list of things to consider.

$ Taper. Should be a fun pairing!
Oh yeah, I like this setup JUST fine!
Favorite shot probably my 8 iron on the 18th. Just put it up there into the wind a bit and let it ride, landing about 20 feet from the pin.
Playing with my Dad’s buddies, a couple times they mentioned how good the contact sounded. Had to be 90% heads, 10% my swing lmao

I think that is the kicker. These heads are just so forgiving. I gave mine a thorough cleaning the other day ahead of putting them to bed for the winter and my 7 iron had quite a bit of marring on the toe of it prior to cleaning, but I can’t remember any significant slices or hooks with these. All issues relate to my inability to catch a ball flush and thin/fat it. Heeling/toeing them still result in quite a respectable ball flight.
I have been playing the blended set of 921 Forged and HMP for awhile now and the longer I play them the more impressed I am. The forged have an amazing feel and good forgiveness. The 4&5 HMP have amazing forgiveness, easy to launch and are long, but have gapped nicely with the Forged.
These are firmly planted in the bag and will likely be long term.

I should go see if I can swing some HMPs in the long irons to compare. I LOVE my 4-5 iron when I can make them work (which is a higher % of the time than I originally expected), but it would be a fun test
They’re nice clubs. Each of my forged and your sets got 10 rounds, but I couldn’t keep either in the bag.

If you get the chance I would be interested in your thoughts. To be fair, I have not hit the 4&5 in Forged but the 4&5 HMP are my favorite long irons I’ve hit.

I agree with @Scooby45
I went with PW-6 Forged and 4-5 HMP. I find the Forged to be quite forgiving but I’m glad I went HMP for the longer iros as they launch easy and provide some extra distance in the clubs I need that from.
I’m thinking about replacing the 4 and 5 Forged with HMPs. Are you still glad you did?
I just gave my set of 921 Forged to one of my Sophomores, he about lost his mind. It’s time for him to move into a more player style set and I’m not sure any offer more forgiveness than these for what they are. So so so good.
These are getting a workout this morning. I’ve said it before but I have the forged in my 8-GW and as someone who can be an inconsistent iron player, these have a lot of forgiveness and present themselves as not being overly intimidating at address
